DESTINATION INFORMATION THAILAND, BHUTAN AND NEPAL What You Need to Know Before You Go PASSPORT AND VISA INFORMATION In order to enter Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal as a citizen of the United States, you will need: A signed, valid passport and a tourist visa each country. Your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months beyond the completion of your trip. It is also imperative that your passport has at least 3 blank visa pages available for entry and exit stamps. Additional blank pages are always a prudent precaution. Additional copies of your passport photo are sometimes requested internally for local forms; we suggest that you carry an additional 2 or 3 in the event these are required. Holders of US passports are not required to obtain a tourist visa for entry into Thailand for stays of up to 30 days. Tourist visas for Bhutan must be authorized in advance. Abercrombie & Kent has made arrangements to obtain your visa authorization through our office in Bhutan. In order to obtain this pre-authorization, we require that you provide A&K USA with a scanned, color copy of the identification pages of your passport. Please send this to us via to by at: operations@abercrombiekent.com no later than 60 days prior to departure. This information is required to obtain a visa clearance and an authorization number which you will receive prior to your flight to Bhutan. Carry the visa authorization with you as it must be presented before boarding your flight into Bhutan or at the border if entering Bhutan by land. The visa authorization enables you to obtain the actual visa stamp in your passport upon arrival in Bhutan. Travellers arriving at the airport without a visa clearance document will not be permitted enter Bhutan (or board flights to Bhutan). The fee for the Bhutan visa is included in your tour cost. You will receive the required visa copy in Thailand from an A&K representative prior to boarding your flight. A tourist visa for Nepal may be obtained prior to departure or upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Please ensure that you are carrying a valid passport, two passport-size photos and the payment of the visa fee (currently USD $25 per person for a 15-day multiple entry visa; USD $40 for 30-day multiple-entry visa) in cash, which you need to present upon arrival in Kathmandu. (Requirements and fees are subject to change.) Travellers entering Tibet from Nepal: A visa for China must be obtained in Kathmandu prior to your arrival in Tibet. If your tour itinerary includes travel in Tibet with Abercrombie & Kent, please complete the form included in this mailing of your pre-tour materials and return it, along with a scanned color copy of the identification pages of your passport to A&K s Downers Grove office so that arrangements can be made to pre-authorize the Tibet permit required to obtain a China visa locally in Nepal. The cost of the visa is currently US$200 cash (subject to change) payable on arrival in Kathmandu. Contact our partner, VisaCentral for easy, efficient passport and visa processing. Call and reference A&K s account number or visit our Travel Store at If you are not a citizen of the United States, your entry requirements may vary. Please consult the nearest diplomatic or consular office of the country or countries you will be visiting.

CONSULAR INFORMATION The U.S. State Department provides Country Specific Information sheets for every country in the world, as well as Travel Alerts and Warnings. Find this information by calling or or online at travel.state.gov. CURRENCY Thailand s unit of currency is the Baht. U.S. dollars are a widely accepted payment option throughout the Thailand. Major credit cards are generally accepted in urban areas, though a surcharge of about 3.5% is usually added. Bhutan s unit of currency is the Ngultrum. Travellers are advised to carry cash as credit cards are not widely accepted in Bhutan. Only a few hotels and larger shops accept certain credit cards (MasterCard, Visa & American Express) and the transaction must be made during bank hours, and an extra service fee is charged to the customer (usually a percentage of the overall purchase). Nepal s unit of currency is the Nepalese Rupee. ATM access is available in Kathmandu and major credit cards (MasterCard and Visa) are accepted in large city hotels and a few large stores, but outside major centers, cash may be required. American Express cards have limited acceptance. Exchange currency only at authorized outlets such as exchange kiosks, banks and hotels. Only exchange what you feel you will need while visiting. It s usually not possible to exchange money while staying in wildlife reserves. Save all receipts from any currency transaction. You may be asked to produce them when you exit the country, and they are required if you intend to reconvert local currency. Converting your money back upon departure may be difficult. We suggest travelling with some U.S. dollars to be exchanged for local currency and at least two major credit cards. If you have a Chip and PIN card, be careful to shield your number from view while entering it on a keypad; never disclose your PIN verbally. Notify your credit card company of your travel plans prior to your departure to avoid any fraud concerns. We do not recommend traveller s checks as they are not as widely accepted as in previous years. HEALTH It is important to familiarize yourself with any potential health issues or concerns related to your destination, and so we strongly recommend consulting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for up-to-date information on required and recommended vaccines and medications. Visit them online at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel or call Plan to visit your doctor or local travel clinic at least 4-6 weeks before departure to allow time for any vaccinations to take effect or to fill any prescriptions. Required Vaccination A yellow fever vaccination is required to enter Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal only if you are arriving from or have transited through a yellow fever endemic area in South America or Africa. The CDC provides a current list of all affected countries. If vaccination for yellow fever is necessary, you must carry an International Certificate of Vaccination provided by your physician; without it, you may be denied entry. If your physician advises against receiving the vaccination because of your personal medical history, he or she can provide you with the necessary documentation for the country(ies) that you are visiting. High altitudes are a feature of travel in Bhutan and Nepal. You may experience altitude sickness. Please consult your healthcare provider for suggestions on prevention and treatment.

WEATHER The climate in Thailand is tropical: the weather is generally very warm throughout the year, humidity is high and it rains often. The seasons can be broken down into hot, wet and dry, with the relatively cool dry season from November to February. Thailand is also home to many mountains, and conditions are generally cooler in the highlands. Bhutan s climate varies by elevation and seasons and you may experience a great difference in temperatures from day to night and at different altitudes. The southern region is hot and tropical and the monsoon season arrives around mid-june and lasts through mid-september. Summer rains are not as extreme in Bhutan s central valley. In general, from mid-may to the end of September, the weather is warm at night (60-64 F) and in the day (72-78 F). Winter (November March) days are sunny and pleasant but cold, with temperatures falling below freezing at night in some regions. Northeast monsoons bring can bring high gale-force winds. Snow falls in the higher regions (and occasionally in Thimpu) from December to February. The weather in Nepal varies by region and altitude. In the north, summers are cool and winters severe, while in the southern part of the country, summers are tropical and winters are mild. Nepal has five major seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter. Monsoon season lasts from approximately the end of June to the middle of September. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons; winter temperatures drop to freezing, with a high level of snowfall in the mountains, while summer can be blisteringly hot. Summer and late spring temperatures range from 83ºF in the hill regions to more than 104ºF in the southern Terai region. The valley of Kathmandu has a pleasant climate ranging from 67-81ºF in summer to 36-68ºF in winter. In general, March through June and mid-september to November tend to be fairly dry and pleasant throughout the country. Use a website such as weather.com to find average temperatures and rainfall during your travel times. ELECTRICAL SERVICE Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal all supply electricity at 220 volts and 50 hertz. Please refer to the Electrical Adapter Guide For Global Travel included in your pre-tour materials. WHAT TO PACK Daytime attire: Varied topography and high altitudes in both countries create weather conditions which can change radically in the course of the day, and between daytime and nighttime. Bring fabrics that breathe and you can wear in layers. Women may feel most comfortable in skirts or long trousers, as opposed to short skirts or shorts. Dress conservatively when visiting temples, monasteries and dzongs - no shorts and tank tops allowed inside. Evening attire: Somewhat smarter, but still casual, clothing is appropriate for evening dining in city restaurants. Formal clothing is not necessary. Visitors to national parks and wildlife reserves should note that in any season, it is advisable to wear clothes of earthy colors (browns and greens) to blend in with the surroundings. Comfortable, walking shoes with low or no heels If your tour itinerary includes trekking/camping a pair of lightweight well-broken in hiking boot and thick socks (not essential for tour programs which include short day hikes.) Carry a pair of socks, since shoes must be removed when entering certain religious buildings.

Sweater and/or lightweight jacket (preferably windproof) Lightweight raincoat or poncho Warm clothes, hat, gloves and thermals for winter (late November to March.) Swimming suit Mosquito repellent Sunglasses, sunscreen lip balm and a sunhat Optional items: lightweight binoculars, collapsible walking stick, small flashlight and extra batteries, universal basin plug, travel alarm (not all hotels have wake-up service.) Ear plugs are suggested to help block out noise as you sleep in Bhutan. Bhutan has a large canine population which tends to bark excessively in the nighttime hours. Simple first-aid kit Prescriptions and medications (We recommend you carry these in their original bottles and/or packaging.) Carry adequate amounts of medications required as these may not be available locally. Charging cables for electronics. Voltage converter and adapter plugs. Note: Laundry service is available at your hotels. Baggage Restrictions Flights to Bhutan have a strict luggage restriction of approximately 44 lbs. of checked baggage per person in Economy Class and approximately 66 lbs.in Business Class. Hand luggage is limited to approximately 11 lbs. per person in Economy and Business Class. Airlines flying within Nepal have varying baggage weight restrictions. If flying to Nepal s Chitwan National Park (Bharatpur), the small aircraft used for travel have a maximum baggage allowance of approximately 44 lbs. per person. Hand luggage is limited to approximately 6 lbs. Baggage over this limit can be stored temporarily if returning to Kathmandu. Flights from Kathmandu, Nepal to Lhasa, Tibet have a strict luggage restriction of one bag weighing no more than approximately 44 lbs. per person in Economy Class and two bags per person weighing no more than approximately 88 lbs. in Business Class. Hand luggage is limited to approximately 15 lbs. per person in Economy and Business Class. As a preventative measure, it is recommended that all luggage be secured with a TSA approved lock.

What You Need to Know When You Arrive TIME ZONES Thailand operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 7 hours. Standard Thai is based on the dialect of the educated elite of Bangkok and the Central Plain. About half of the population of the country speaks Standard Thai, with the remaining half speaking a regional Thai dialect or a non- Thai language such as Hmong or Khmer. Some English is spoken, especially in larger cities and resort areas popular with overseas visitors. You may also recognize English words in everyday Thai conversation imports from many foreign languages enliven Thai speech. Bhutan's official language is Dzongkha, a derivative of Tibetan. Sarchopkha and Nepali are also common, in the south and east of the country respectively. English, taught in schools, is widely spoken.

Nepal's official language is Nepali. Closely related to Hindi, it is spoken as a mother tongue by about 60% of Nepal's population, and as a second language by the remaining 40%, who speak one of Nepal's other 68 languages as their primary tongue. Young people are increasingly choosing to learn English. Please consult with your guide on translations, if needed. AIRPORT INFORMATION At most international airports, passengers cannot be met inside secured areas. This includes Immigration, Customs halls and Baggage Claim. Your A&K representative will greet you as you exit these restricted areas; look for the person holding the distinctive yellow A&K signboard. Before departing, remember to tag your checked luggage with the A&K luggage tags provided. These brightly colored markers help identify you and your luggage quickly. PROTECTIONS AND PRECAUTIONS Use the safes where available in your accommodations to secure your valuables, especially passports, medications, jewelry, money and electronics. If you must carry valuables, keep them on your person at all times. Be mindful of your surroundings and take extra caution in crowds. Photocopy the personal information pages of your passport; leave one copy with a family member or friend and pack another separately from the passport itself. You may want to scan and a copy to yourself for easy, online access. This will help speed up the replacement process. As a preventative measure, it is recommended that all luggage be secured with a TSA approved lock. ETIQUETTE AND PHOTOGRAPHY Please be sensitive and respectful of local mores and customs, especially where religious issues are involved. The Bhutanese are a proud and deeply religious people who value their traditional culture-so much so that tourism is strictly limited in an effort to preserve traditional ways of life. Visitor access at some destinations (often religious sites) is limited or restricted; please observe local rules. Local Buddhist tenets include a respect for physical health, and many Bhutanese pay strict attention to diet, exercise and related personal choices. In Bhutan, tobacco sales are banned. You are allowed to bring up to 200 cigarettes into the country and must declare the cigarettes at the airport as well as pay 200% tax for (approximately USD$40 for one packet of cigarettes depending on the brand of cigarettes) which you will be given a receipt to smoke. Smoking in public places without a receipt to smoke is illegal and carries a stiff fine. Hotel policies on smoking may differ and it is important to inquire about designated smoking areas/rooms available at your hotel. Please do not bring cigarettes or candy into the country to use in lieu of tips or as casual gifts, as they are considered to be unhealthy and may offend would-be recipients. In both countries, recognized charities often have collection boxes in hotels. We recommend that you make any donations here, where you can be assured that the funds will be properly used. Unless you are shooting a crowded public scene, it is considered courteous to ask permission before taking pictures of local people, especially small children. Please be respectful of local people who do not wish to be photographed. Photography is not permitted at some locations, which may include government buildings, museums, art galleries, private houses, etc. These areas are usually clearly marked. Please do

not take photographs in monasteries before asking permission. Some monasteries do not permit flash photography. If in doubt, please ask. In Bhutan, permission to shoot 8mm or 16mm movie film must be obtained in advance from the Royal Government, though use of a video camera "for tourist purposes" is allowed without prior permission. Be sure to pack ample amounts of batteries and memory cards or film for your camera and video equipment, along with the appropriate charging cables. A dustproof case or sealable plastic bags and lens brush are also recommended. FOOD AND DRINK Do not use tap water for drinking or brushing teeth. Even purified water in open containers should be avoided. It is always preferable and safer to use only bottled or canned water. Outside of Kathmandu along trekking routes at teahouses, meat is not always offered with meals. Regardless of precautions, changes in water and diet can result in mild abdominal upsets and nausea. To prevent serious illness, avoid suspect foods such as uncooked vegetables, peeled fruit, un-pasteurized milk and milk products. Beware of any food or drink sold by street vendors. SHOPPING Many A&K guests enjoy the chance to purchase items that reflect their destination, and so as a courtesy, your guide may recommend a particular shop or arrange a shopping visit. Please note, however, that these recommendations should not be taken as A&K s endorsement of the shop, merchandise and/or pricing. You assume all responsibility for any transactions that take place, including shipping arrangements that are made. The decision to shop while travelling is a personal choice and shopping is never compulsory. If at any point during your journey you feel pressured to shop or make purchases, please immediately discuss the matter with your Abercrombie & Kent representative. To avoid disappointment, we suggest the following guidelines: Compute the exchange rate and thoroughly review credit card receipts before signing. Take your purchases home with you whenever possible. Airfreight can take many months and actual shipping charges can be excessive. Customs delays, fees and regulations can further complicate the issue. If you choose to ship purchases, we suggest taking a picture of the item(s) and/or marking them in some way to ensure you receive what was purchased. For example, you could write your name on the backside of a rug. Determine if your shipment will be delivered door-to-door or to the nearest customs facility, as is often the case. Most goods shipped from other countries to the United States are subject to Customs duty. Duty taxes, if applicable, are paid as you re-enter the United States. Regardless of assurances by merchants, these cannot be prepaid on your behalf. Currently, each person is entitled to an $800 duty-free exemption, however, may only bring one liter of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars. Keep all sales receipts for items purchased throughout your trip and try to pack all items that you will need to declare together. This will ease the Customs process upon re-entry into the U.S. Consult the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for more details.

COMMUNICATIONS Contact your cellular telephone provider to determine if your phone operates on the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and what, if any, activation may be required. If your phone is not GSM-enabled, you may find that renting a phone specifically designed for use overseas is the most practical option. In Asia, reception on any cell phone can be unreliable and unpredictable. In some locations, transmission is not possible at all. OF SPECIAL NOTE Visitors to national parks and wildlife reserves should note that while your guides are extremely knowledgeable and successful trackers, encountering wildlife is unpredictable. (In tiger reserves, don t expect to see tigers every day.) TIPPING GUIDELINES While decisions regarding tipping rest entirely with you, we suggest the following gratuities (noted in U.S. dollars) depending on the type of journey: Resident Tour Director or Group Extension Guide All Small Group Journeys and Pre/Post Tour Group Extensions $15 per person per day Not applicable Tailor Made Journeys Local Guides Included $20 per person, per day (full day) Drivers Included $10 per person, per day (full day) Airport Transfer Drivers Included $5 per person, per transfer Hotel Porters Included $2 per bag Housekeepers Included $2 per person, per night Included Meals Included 10-15% unless already added Restaurants or Room Service on own 10-15% unless already added 10-15% unless already added For extra nights or Tailor Made services added to a small group journey, please follow the Tailor Made Journey guidelines for these days only.
