1 Social Studies Unit Topic 1 The North West Mounted Police Outcome: 6-KH-029 Describe the role of the North West Mounted Police. Lots of links to information here: Lesson One Introduction Activate: - Show students the map of Canada from 1873, only 7 years after confederation o Review which provinces have already been founded - In small groups, have students brainstorm five things they know about the current Royal Canadian Mounted Police o If needed, display a picture of RCMP with a horse up on the Smart Board to help prompt them - Discuss the results as a class, and write their answers up on the board Acquire: Apply: - Before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, there was the North West Mounted Police. - The 5 W's of the North West Mounted Police - WHO: The North West Mounted Police - WHAT: A new police force, under Prime Minister Alexander Mackenzie - WHEN: May 23, WHERE: They were trained at Fort Garry in Manitoba, then marched West to try and bring order to the land. - WHY: The North West Mounted Police was established for several reasons, one being that there were American whiskey traders and hunters who had their eye on Canada's land. The key trigger to their formation was the murder of 36 First Nations people in Saskatchewan by American whisky traders. - As a class, take the eligibility quiz for the North West Mounted Police, found on this page: - In the same small groups, have each table write down 2 important facts they learned about the North-West Mounted Police today. Share each table group's information to the class.

2 Lesson Two The March West and the Hardships that Followed Activate: - Review yesterday's basic information about the North-West Mounted Police Acquire: Apply - On July 4 th, 1874, 300 men left Fort Dufferin, Manitoba on horseback, dressed in bright red jackets. They took livestock and wagons full of supplies with them. - Hardships: Drinking bad water, mosquitoes, severe thunderstorms. Horses grew weak from lack of food and water, and many died. - The group eventually split up, with the weakest men and horses heading North, and the stronger men and horses headed to Fort Whoop-up, where the whiskey bandits were hiding out. When the Mounties (new nickname) arrived at their destination, the whiskey traders had fled. - Show a map that is similar to page 34 of the textbook (from the Canadian Encyclopedia) on the Power Point presentation - Go through the Interactive March West Map link on this page: - Each table group will do a short acting presentation to the class, where they depict themselves as members of the North West Mounted Police, marching West. - Each group member must have one hardship happen to them or their horse, and they can decide how many team members will ultimately live or die - The groups will have the rest of the class period to work - Each group will be expected to hand in a chart showing the way their group will progress as they trek West. - If time, groups can begin presenting today. The presentation should only be a few minutes in length.

3 "The Great March West" Presentations You must include THREE of the following topics in your presentation, one from each category. The creation of the North-West Mounted Police The murder of 36 First Nations people in Cypress Hills by American whiskey traders led to the formation of the NWMP Formed in May 1873 Alexander MacKenzie was the prime minister at the time the NWMP was created Leaving for the West The NWMP trained in Fort Garry, MB Left Fort Dufferin, MB for the March West in July men on horseback, wagons, and oxen started on the march West During the March The goal was to reach Fort Whoop-Up and find the whiskey bandits The stronger men and horses took the South route, while the weaker ones took a North route When the NWMP reached Fort Whoop-Up, the bandits had already fled! Group Member Hardship Faced Lives? Die?
