PSYCHOLOGY AND AFRICAN CULTURE SUMMER SCHOOL VENUE: KYAMBOGO UNIVERSITY, KAMPALA-UGANDA DATES: 15TH JULY TO 10 TH AUGUST 2018 COURSE INTRODUCTION: Lying at the intersection of many other disciplines, from linguistics to philosophy, studying psychology allows students to develop many different skills and modes of thought. Frequently studied psychological questions include How do we perceive the world around us?, Is there a link between genius and madness?, Why do we conform to societies norms?, What is emotion? At Kyambogo University the emphasis is on scientific rigor, and evidence based discussion, teaching students to think critically and analytically, and question the information presented to them. Psychology is the subject for students with natural curiosity, who question the world around them and are interested in covering a diverse range of disciplines, while upholding the principles of scientific analysis.

PSYC-3 Understanding street life in Africa The course aims at introducing students to understanding street life as the study of the nature, behavior and cognitive processes of street children and factors that contribute to street children psychological problems so that students appreciate and provide expert support. Presentations will be made; in class and field visits of where these street children are found in Kisenyi and other parts of Kampala.
PSYC-4 Refugee psychology Uganda may be best place in the world to be a refugee. But that could change without more money. KAMPALA, Uganda every day for nearly a year, an average of about 2,000 refugees have entered Uganda from South Sudan. Most of them are women and children who have spent several days traveling by foot, fleeing a civil war and famine that has devastated the world s youngest country. Some saw their families killed and their homes burned to the ground.luckily, their new home may be the best place on the planet to be a refugee. Instead of being locked in crowded camps surrounded by barbed wire, the 1.2 million refugees in Uganda are given large plots of land in sprawling settlements to build homes or, if they like, small farms. If agrarian life isn't for them, they can move freely around the country, traveling to towns or to the bustling capital of Kampala, which 95,000 refugees call their home. Bidi Bidi hosts more than 270,000 refugees, all of whom have arrived in the past year. Uganda is the largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa, and Bidi Bidi is the largest settlement on the globe.
But Uganda is also one of the poorest countries in the world, and the pressure from South Sudan is gradually pushing the country's refugee-friendly policy to its limits. UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, has said it needs $569 million to support refugees in Uganda. It has received less than one-quarter of that so far. COURSE CONTENT Concept of refugee psychology, behavior and mind, types of refugees, stages of refugee experience, relevance of knowledge to social scientists and psychologists, psychological approaches to refugee behavior, refugee experience, psychosocial support and the patterns of adjustment. Methods of teaching: classroom work for 8 hours and field visits of refugee settlement camps in Uganda that is Bidi-Bidi refugee settlement and Nakivale refugee settlement
PSYC-5 Mental health and psychopathology in Uganda Mental illness on the rise in Uganda and the trend has been linked to previous conflicts and urbanization which has pushed many people into gambling and repeated borrowing, alcohol and drug abuse.the course content includes the nature of mental health in Uganda, common cases of mental health, causes and effects of the diminishing mental health to the university students and what is to be done to curb down this trend.
