According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
3
4 Development on the state of homelessness in the United States 32% of those homeless families with children were not in shelter-considerably higher than the national rate of just under 10%. We may think that relatively affluent Arapahoe and Douglas Counties are shielded from these statistics. This is not the case. There are families trying to shelter in horse stalls and in packing crates in our counties. Douglas Count y, Cherry Creek, and Littleton School Districts have homeless children in their schools today. The League of Women Voters of Arapahoe and Douglas Counties is embarking on a study of homelessness in our count ies. As a kick-off to the st udy, in April LWVADC will host an all-member meeting that will provide you with more information about homelessness in Colorado. Michelle Ritchie and Jill Gulotta with the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless will talk to us about the state of homelessness in our st at e. The Coalition is a national leader in providing integrated housing, health care, vocational and supportive serv ices, and creating lasting solutions to homelessness in Colorado. The meeting will be Tuesday, April 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Koelbel Library, Rooms A & B, 5955 S. Holly St., Centennial, CO Please plan on coming and bringing your fr iends. GREAT DECISIONS Great Decisions will be meeting on Friday, April 12 at 9:30 AM. Three topics will be covered: 1. Political Part ies ; 2. Civil Forfeiture; and
