2 Introduction This document gives a historical record of the changes made to the dataset since its initial release. It will also contain, if applicable, a list of known errata that will be updated in the next release of the dataset. We encourage scholars using the data to always use the latest version available if possible. In previous versions, a startprecision of 3 (meaning that day is unknown; month and year are precisely coded) or 4 (month is assigned; year is coded precisely) meant that the day was set to the first of that month. In this version, however, this has been changed to the last of the given month. Furthermore, while in previous versions a startprecision of 5 (day and month are unknown, year is coded precisely), 6 (year is assigned) or 7 (year of first death is missing) meant that the date was set to 1 January, this has now been changed to 31 December. 12

If a group splinters and it is clear which group is the faction as they take a somewhat new name (e.g. Palipehutu FNL in Burundi, splitting from the original Palipehutu) the name is written with a long hyphen without any spaces. If, on the other hand, the splinter does not take a new name, but maintains that they are the original group (for coding rules regarding how we determine which grouping is the faction, see the UCDP Dyadic Dataset codebook at UCDP needs to create a name in order to be able to separate the factions in the data. The faction is then given the original name, followed by a space, a long hyphen, a space and then the initials of the leader of the group. An example is the faction of FRUD that kept on fighting in Djibouti when the main part of the group had signed a peace agreement. The faction s leader was called Ahmed Dini, and the name of the group was subsequently set as FRUD AD. In Version , another change is that we have chosen to use the same name for a group for all years of the conflict, even if it has in fact changed names during the conflict period. Thus, instead of recording PRA (Popular Resistance Army) for Uganda 1982, we have recorded NRA (National Resistance Army) for all years ( ), even though the group 43

44 only changed its name from PRA to NRA in In earlier versions the name history could be seen in the name (e.g. PRA/NRA and UDCA/LRA). This is thus not the case in version However, a special rebel group dataset will be released in July where the name history of all groups registered in UCDP data will be included. The dataset will be available at 44
