I graduated in history and Asian studies at Sapienza University of Rome and obtained my PhD in Social Sciences at Roskilde University in Denmark. Since 2017, I am a Life Member of Clare Hall college, University of Cambridge. My research focuses on the quest for economic development in East and Southeast Asia after World War II. Within this broad framework, I have worked on the debates surrounding the Asian crisis 1997/98; on the Vietnamese reform process; on an historically-contextualized, critical review of the middle-income trap narrative. My other research interest regards East and Southeast Asian political history: my main work in this field has been a monograph on the question of the Chinese representation in the United Nations from 1949 to My current research deals with the process of industrialization in Southeast Asia since the Plaza Agreement of 1985 and its limited contribution to catching-up with core economies (with the obvious exception of Singapore). A related aspect of this research regards the implications of this problematic industrialization path on industrial labour. This research is part of a large collaborative project involving 13 European and Asian institutions in the frame of an EU funded Horizon 2020 grant. During my stay at ARI, I intend to continue my research on industrialization and labour with a specific focus on the Singapore Johore Riau Islands growth triangle. My aim will be to reconstruct the economic history of this transnational economic cooperation scheme; to assess to what extent this cooperation contributed to industrial upgrading and deepening in the Malaysia and Indonesia; to analyse if this case-study confirms the trend observed in other areas of the region in terms of labour precariety and vulnerability. 2 Jul 2018 Page 3 of 8
