EMPOWERIN MIGRANTS for a SOCIAL EUROPEAN INCLUSION The purpose of the project is to improve the competencies of the teaching staff and implement teaching methods, methodologies, approaches and tools in order to strenghten language and professional skills, promote access the labour market and foster inclusive education and inter-culture exchanges and awareness campaign targeting both host communities and migrants. 2
Education as the key vehicle for the integration of migrants in local communities Learning a language is often the first step towards becoming part of a new country, culture and community. Helping migrants speak the local language is vital for their entry into the job market. Adult learning is crucial for migrants as they may require different skills from those that they used in their countries of origin for their new careers. It can also help equip people working with migrants with intercultural awareness and competences, easing the integration process for everyone involved. 3
PROJECT OVERVIEW Erasmus + Adult education 24 months 4 countries: UK, Germany, Sweden,Belgium 7 days per mobility 4
STAFF PROFILE: Teachers and trainers for Migrants Project managers Lawyers Journalist Communication experts 5
PARTNERS COUNTRIES: UK Germany Belgium Sweden 6
Liverpool - UK 5 mobilities Communication skills Jobshadowing Creative industries Urban riqualification Job creation Entrepreneurship of migrants in creative industries 7
GERMANY The Adult Education system is particularly developed. Adult education play a key role It is financed by the federal state and by the central government Fragmentated system divided in 16 federal States 8
Lessons observation The system that offer 900-hour courses to learn German and learn about the national habits and rules Strong link language and cultural training and access to the Job Market Good successful rate 9
BELGIUM Very chaotic system divided in 3 regional communities: Flemish, Wallonian, German Each one of them has it s own approach, charatteristic and rules which make it difficult for the newcommers to integrate. 10
Very complex burocratic system Brussels as a zona franca Adult education financed at regional level and therefore very diverse The flemish system is well organized and linked with the job market Demand driven 11
SWEDEN The cornerstone of this system is to empower people to pursue their career goals, increase their self-esteem, motivation and independence One of the put in linking the needs of individuals with the demand of society, especially the labour market. Concreteveness: The SFI Program combine the knowledge of the Swedish language with the teaching of the working language of a specific profession or the vocational training for jobs that have great demand in the labour market, for example nurses, chefs or construction workers. 12
Vocational training The SFX courses start have the purpose to shorten time between education and work or entrepreneurship. Courses for eleven different professions such as baker, craftman, IT Programmer, Truck Driver and Bus Driver. As for the SFI program, the courses are totally free for the students. The SFL Swedish for Truck Drivers for example, is one of the SFX course and it combines language teaching and vocational training in a job that has a large demand in Sweden, especially in Stockholm. After completing the course, the students must also pass the test to obtain the C driving license to start working as truck drivers. It is significant that more than 90% of them manage to pass the test and get a job immeiately at the end of the course. 13
BARRIERS No recognition of diplomas or universities degrees that obliged skilled migrants to start it over again Need of a more uniformed integration process based on a demand driven system strightly linked with the job market Isolation and poor connection between the local actors that deals with the integration of migrants 14
