Statements on refugee education Introduction: For refugees education is key for socio-economic success and for overcoming disadvantages Education fosters social inclusion, economic growth and innovation. A social investment in the long term. Enhancing education for migrants requires coordination of different policy areas and multi-stakeholder involvement. We focus here on three themes: Quality of Teaching Additional Support Multi-stakeholder cooperation
I. Quality of teaching ( ) working with multicultural and multilingual students is one of the areas that teachers feel the least prepared for (OECD, 2014) ERASMUS+ Project NAOS on Professional Capacity ( : Five areas of expertise needed for teachers in diverse classrooms: Language diversity Pedagogy/didactics Social psychology and identity Parental involvement Community-school relationships
I. Quality of teaching: STATEMENT Are teacher qualified for the diverse needs of refugees? Define the problem, what is lacking? How to tackle it? Give examples of good practices
II. Additional support ( )additional support is necessary for refugee children not only for cognitive matters but also in order to respond to their particular situation (Fundamental Rights Agency, 2017) Successful: Qualified support person in each school Diverse types of assistance and support for schoolwork Particular support mechanisms for Unaccompanied Minors
II. Additional support: STATEMENT Are psychosocial needs of refugees met? Define the problem, what is lacking (in profession as in themes: language / trauma /? How to tackle them? Give examples of good practices
3. Multi stakeholder cooperation ( ) different stakeholders interact, but coherent coordination of their activities for effective support and integration of newcomers is largely lacking (Eurocities, 2017) Successful: Cities or districts taking the lead in coordinating the municipal and local actors Cooperating between the municipality, NGOs and volunteers Trade Unions taking a lead in collaborations
III. Multi Stakeholder Cooperation: STATEMENT How do different actors involved in education for refugees (should) cooperate? Define the problem, which actors and do they cooperate together (who takes the lead?)? How to tackle it? Give examples of good practices
What do we take home?
Thanks! Any questions?
