In Chuuk,100percentofvouchershavebeendistributedto1,167families, totalingusd2,568,000.inyap,188beneficiarieshavereceivedvouchers worthusd223,850. IOM is assisting people to rebuild destroyed homes. In Chuuk, 1,128 peoplethatweremobilizedandtrainedbyiomareworkingtorebuild houses and public infrastructure. SixtyMseven percent of homes are complete, amounting to 223 new homes. In Yap, more than 216 community workers are working to rebuild houses and public infrastructureinulithiatoll.onehundredpercentofthenewhomesare complete, amounting to 94. In total, 428 new homes are being constructed and 155 public infrastructure sites are being repaired or rebuilt.nowthatthevoucherprogramhaswrappedupandhousingwill soonbe concluded, the focus has shifted to the rebuilding of public infrastructure. micronesiaenquiries@iom.int 1*

The J/TIP supported counter trafficking project has seen 116 officers in FSM and 42 in RMI trained in victim identification,investigation,protectionandreferral.andwehavealsoworkedsidembymsidewiththegovernment taskforcestobetteraddresstraffickingissuesinacoordinatedmanner. TheAustralianMsupportedCADREprojectsawnotonlygreatachievementsindevelopingclimatechangecurriculum anditsadoptionintotheregularschoolteachingprograms,butalsomanyphysicalinfrastructureupgradesacross 18schools.CommunitiesworkingwithourCADREteamwerealsoabletomonitorandreporttotheirgovernments whenassistancewasrequiredduringtherecentdroughtinrmi. IOM*Fleet*Manager*in*Chuuk*Talks*Barges* Lastyear,IOMacquiredtwobargesthatcanquicklyandefficiently deliverbuildingmaterialstolagoonislandbuildingsitesinchuuk, reducingboatloadtimesanddoublehandlingofmaterials.these barges round off the IOM Chuuk fleet of four. We asked Fleet ManagerRickHermantogivehisviewsonthenewfleetadditions. How$have$the$barges$helped$meet$the$needs$of$the$beneficiaries?$ For the beneficiaries receiving the assistance, the barges add elementsofspeed,timelinessandconvenience.eachbargeisable to deliver two entire house kits at a time, as opposed to small portionsdeliveredinmultiplesmallboattrips. Communitymembersinthesestatesdidnotpreviouslyhaveaccesstosafewater in their homes. Through the installation of the chlorine injection systems, the properamountofchlorineisdeliveredtothewatersystemtopurifyitofbacteria andorganicmatter.thiseliminatesthedangerouspracticeofaddingamountsof chlorinetowaterwithoutpropermeasurement. After a joint Government of the MarshallIslands,USAID and IOM agriculture reassessment was conducted in November2016,sixoftheseverelyaffectedatollswereselectedtoreceiveanadditionaltwoMmonthhalfrationof supplementalfoodassistanceinmarch2017tohelpthecommunitiestransitiontononmdroughttimes. Inanefforttomitigatetheenvironmentalimpactsofsupplementalfoodassistance,IOMwithfundingfromUSAID conductedtwoouterislandcleanmupcontest/promotionsaspartofthe2016elniñominduceddroughtresponse activities.intotal,morethan500bagsoftrashwerecollectedandreturnedtomajuro. * Inresponsetothe2016ElNiñoMinduceddrought,IOMreceivedfundingfromtheNewZealandEmbassytopilota Rainwater Harvesting Improvement project developed by the RMI WASH Cluster. Three atolls that were determinedtobeseverelyaffectedby thedrought wereselectedasbeneficiaries.threeteamscomprised of personnelfromiom,marshallislandsredcrosssocietyandpublicworksweredeployedtotheirrespectiveislands inoctober2016,andatotalof71householdsweredirectbeneficiaries. 3*
4 Community*Resilience*through*Rainwater*in*Chuuk* 4* ThroughfundingfromtheAustralianDepartmentofForeignAffairsandTrade (DFAT),IOMisimplementingarainwaterresilienceprojectinChuuk,FSM.The CommunityRainwaterResilience(CRR)projectistargetingvulnerablelowlying island communities in the state andisintendedtoserveasabackmup water supplyduringperiodsofreducedrainfall,demonstratehowmuchraincanbe caught withamodestsurfaceareaandencouragemoreutilizationofexisting availablesurfacearea. ThroughtheUSD90,000project,10standalonerainwatercatchmentunitswill beerectedin10chuukcommunities.intotalthiswillbe2,402.5squarefeetof catchment area, and 32,000 gallons of storage Based on the average annual rainfall for the state these catchments are each expected to catch 20,780 gallonsoffreshrainwaterperyear,benefitinganestimated3,673community members. Sofaroneunithasbeencompletedwiththeremainingnineunitsplannedfor constructionthissummer. Assisted*Voluntary*Return*and*Reintegration*in*the*Region* Formigrantswhowishtoreturnhomebutlackthemeanstodoso,AssistedVoluntary Returnand Reintegration s(avrrs)areoftenthe onlysolutionto theirimmediate plight.theconsequencesofnotreturningsuchmigrantsinasafeandspeedywaycan begraveforthemigrantsaswellashost,destinationandtransitcountries. BetweenJuneMDecember2016,withsupportfromAustralia,Kiribati,India,UNHCR, IOMERF,IOMGAFandIOMHASMFund,IOMMicronesiaassistedlocalgovernments NepaleseandIndianmigrantsreceiveIOMassistance. Since2015,IOMMicronesiahasassistedcoordinationofservicesand/orfacilitated departureofmorethan170irregularand/orvulnerablemigrantsintheregion. The USAID/OFDAMfunded CADRE Plus program continuestosupportpohnpeiandyapstatedoesas they incorporate school emergency management planning(semp)anddrillsintoschools. SEMP planning and drills are now part of accreditationforpohnpeistatedoeandsoonwillbe inyap.schoolsthatcompletetheirsempanddrill (with IOM present) receive a certificate signed by IOM,DOEandthelocalDepartmentofPublicSafety. Schools often show great improvement between theirfirstpracticedrillandfinaldrill,whichusually takesaroundfiveminutesfromalarmsoundto all clear. The nearly fivemyear AustraliaMfunded Climate Adaptation, Disaster Risk ReductionandEducation(CADRE)projectwrappedupinDecember2016.The project proved highly respected by schools, communities, government partners and other international organizations even winning the UNISDR PacificInnovationandLeadershipAward.Throughtheproject10,000students and 400 teachers in 50 vulnerable communities across FSM and RMI benefitted from trainings and resiliencembuilding activities around climate changeadaptationanddisasterriskreduction.theprojectwrappedup with the completion of 18 physical climate adaptation/disaster mitigation interventions, which emanated from a communitymlevel participatory mappingprocess.theinterventionsincludedwaterharvestingsystems,solar lighting,improvedwashfacilitiesandothersmallprojectsthatimprovedthe resilienceofcommunitiestoclimatechangeandnaturaldisaster. The books, including teacher and student handbooks and comics, have been approved and adopted by the MOE and included in the curriculum benchmarks.all Palaupublicschoolstudentshavetablets enablingstudentstousehardandsoftversionsofthebooks. 6 PREPARE*Radio*Initiative*Continues** Chuuk*Station*Before* Chuuk*Station*After* IOM s project to repair andrefurbishradio stations in the North Pacific continues. The Chuuk radio station was completed in October After the rehabilitation, including properly covering the radio s groundsystem,thestationbroadcastcanbe heard all the way to Japan Work to rehabilitate the radio station in Yap is currently ongoing and expected to be completeinmay2017. Essentials*of*Humanitarian*Assistance*Trainings*in*Region* IOMisrollingouttheEssentialsofHumanitarianAssistance(EHA)trainingsintheNorthPacific TheinteractiveEHA curriculum was developed by IOM s PREPARE and CADRE Plus programs.
