1 COLONIAL AUSTRALIA IN THE 1800 S Grade 5, Term 3 project. Term 3 s project is made up of two parts. The first part is researching and presen ng informa on on an important part of Australian history and the second is researching and presen ng informa on on your family tree. PART 1 Presenta on/report This part of your project will involve researching and presen ng informa on on an important me in Colonial Australia in the 1800 s. The me that you will study will be chosen by your teacher. You will receive a sheet about your project topic that will have informa on to help you get started, it will also have some electronic resources that you may like to use. This part of your project can be presented in various way. Some examples include: PowerPoint presenta on. Poster. Book. Diorama or model with suppor ng informa on (cue cards, PowerPoint or poster to provide informa on). A combina on of the above. The aim of this part of the project is for you to gain an understanding of an important me in Australian history, your research and presenta on will also help other students learn about this me. PART 2 Family tree/history This part of your project involves researching, as best you can, the history of YOUR family. The aim of this part of your project is for you to discover how your family arrived in Australia, and perhaps a brief history of how or why they came to Australia. Informa on may be limited for you on this topic, therefore we are happy for you to research your family as best you can. Construc ng a family tree as far back as you can is an acceptable way of comple ng this part of your project. Some examples of how this part may look like include a poster that has: Family tree that shows as many genera ons as you are able to discover (this may go back hundreds of years or as recent as your grandparents, it just depends on the informa on you are able to get). Use a template from a website such as: h p:// or see your teacher (he/she will have some templates that you can choose from and copy for you make sure you ask early!!). OR be crea ve and present your tree in a unique way! It is not expected that you spend too much me on this part of your project. Some sugges ons for researching your family history include: Interviewing your parents Interviewing grandparent, aunts, uncles etc. Seeing if your family has any documents on your families history You can go onto family history websites, some cost money to explore, so make sure you do it with an adult present! Mid way Check: Week 6, Wednesday 21st of August Due date: Week 9, Wednesday 11th of September REMEMBER TO ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT!

3 CHINESE IMMIGRATION At the me that news about the Australian gold rush reached China in 1853, the country had been suffering from years of war and famine. In order to raise money for the fare to Australia, a man would take a loan from a local trader, agreeing to make regular repayments. His wife and children stayed behind, and worked for the trader if the man was unable to repay the money he had borrowed. To reach Melbourne, it was a journey of several months by ship in cramped condi ons. Explore the reasons why the Chinese immigrated to Australia. What was their part in the Australian Gold Rush? What was the rela onship with other immigrants/australians like? Were the Chinese treated equally to other people on the Gold mines? Describe in detail what it would have been like to be a Chinese person on the gold fields in the 1800 s EUREKA STOCKADE The Eureka Stockade was a civil rebellion in 1854 in Victoria, Australia by gold miners against the officials supervising the gold-mining regions of Ballarat. Research the following: What was the Eureka Stockade? Where did it happen and who was involved? Why did it happen? Why is this event so important in Australian history? Who played an important role during this me? GOLD! Between 1851 and 1861, Australia produced one third of the world's gold. By the end of that century, Australia was the largest producer of gold in the world. Research: What is gold? Where in Australia was gold found (consider including a map showing where the places were)? How successful was the gold mining in Australia? Where was the biggest nugget found, how big was it and how much was it worth? Is it s ll mined today? Where?

4 LIVING ON THE MINEFIELDS Condi ons on the Australian goldfields were harsh. The fields were crowded: miners had between 1 and 3 square metres of 'claim' to live and work. Many diggers lived in tents, or even rough, open bark shelters. Who lived on the minefields? What were the living condi ons like? What did miners and their families eat? How did they look a er themselves? For example: bathing, washing clothes etc. Include any other interes ng facts or details you come across. MINING FOR GOLD IN THE 1800 S UNTIL NOW! Mining for gold in the 1800 s was extremely different to today s mining. Research what a miner had to do to mine for gold in the 1800 s, and discuss how this has changed to Australia's current mining jobs and condi ons. Could anyone mine for gold? What did a mining licence look like, how much did it cost and how did a miner get one? How did miners look for gold? Was there more than one way? What equipment did they use? What were condi ons like for a miner in the mines? How has mining changed over the years? Are there any ac ve mines s ll in use today? Where? BEING A CHILD IN THE 1800 S Living in the 1800 s as a child was extremely different to how we live today. How did children occupy themselves in the 1800 s? What games did they play? What toys did they have? What was a child's role in the family? How were they expected to behave? What was schooling like in the 1800 s? What sort of clothes did children wear in the 1800 s. Were children expected to do any jobs or chores? Consider being crea ve: Write a diary entry by a child living in the 1800 s detailing what an ordinary day may have been like; do a table comparing children from the 1800 s to children of today; make a diorama of a typical se ng from the 1800 s. Use your imagina on!

5 VAN DIEMEN'S LAND In the 1800 s, Tasmania was known as Van Diemen's Land. From 1812 un l 1853, convict ships were sent direct to Van Diemen's Land rather than stopping in Sydney. In the fi y years of transporta on about 67,000 convicts arrived in Van Diemen's Land. Research and discover the history of Van Diemen's Land throughout the 1800 s. What was this place used for? How were people treated on Van Diemen's Land? How did the convicts feel abut being on the island? Consider sharing a story or stories of specific people or groups that lived in Van Diemen's land. Were there any significant people involved in the history of this place? NORFOLK ISLAND The history of Norfolk Island's rela onship with Australia is sca ered with ac ons that are at best head scratching and at worst immoral and illegal. Australia has gathered more and more of the island to itself - wiping out Norfolk culture and robbing the islanders of their birth rights. Research and discover the history of Norfolk Island throughout the 1800 s. What was this place used for? How were people treated on the island? How did the convicts feel abut being on the island? Consider sharing a story or stories of specific people or groups that stayed on this island (for instance, some people escaped and became bushrangers). Were there any significant people involved in the history of this place? MIGRATION TO AUSTRALIA Many different cultural groups took the large voyage to migrate to Australia in the 1800 s. Some of these chose to come here and some had no choice at all. Explore who these people were and where they came from. Research and provide informa on on the different people who migrated to Australia in the 1800 s. Why did they move to Australia? What were the circumstances that lead them here? Did certain cultural groups se le in specific areas? Consider including a meline, detailing the migra on of different cultural groups to Australia. What jobs/roles did these people take on in Australia?

6 FAMOUS HISTORICAL AUSTRALIANS Choose a historical figure from Australian History, from the list below, Research and produce informa on on why this person is important to Australian history. Make sure you check with the other person doing this topic that you have not chosen he same person. At that me, the con nent consisted of six Bri sh colonies which were partly selfgoverning, but subject to the law-making power of the Bri sh Parliament. Each colony had its own government and laws, including its own railway system, postage stamps and tariffs (taxes). This caused a lot of problems and people began to think about the benefits of uni ng as one na on, under a federal system of governance. Research and detail what happened leading up to Federa on. Who were the people that were involved? Who made decisions? How were the states and territories formed? What is the difference between the two? How and where did parliament form? How does Australia's federal system work (brief descrip on) It may be helpful to include a glossary of terms to help you and other people understand different words (such as: na- on, federa on, colony etc.) AUSTRALIAN COLONIES Australia was not claimed at one single point in me, but rather, in a series of steps. What is a colony? Where in Australia were these colonies formed (consider including a map with the colonies on it)? How were colonies formed? Who made the laws within each colony? Who were the significant people during the me of colonisa on? What were some of Australia s historical colonies? Why are they important to Australian history? Van Diemen's Land, Norfolk Island etc. What made the colonies agree to federa on?
