1 WHAT IS IT? 2017 VIETNAMESE REFUGEE STORY COMPETITION The Vietnamese Refugee Story Competition is part of the Museum Project which aims to collect and preserve real life stories and history events relating to the arrival and settlement of Vietnamese Boat People in Australia in the late 1970's and 1980's. Successful entries will be displayed at the exhibition to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Vietnamese refugee settlement in Australia. The Competition is open to all year 10 to year 12 students in secondary schools across Victoria in Students are invited to submit entries to the competition before 30 December The prizes for the top three entries plus one encouragement prize will be as follows: 1st prize: $ copy of Quynh Dao's memoir "The Beauty That Remains 2nd prize $ copy of Quynh Dao's memoir "The Beauty That Remains 3rd prize $ copy of Quynh Dao's memoir "The Beauty That Remains Encouragement prize $ copy of Quynh Dao's memoir "The Beauty That Remains HOW DO I ENTER? Entries can be in English or Vietnamese, and should address one of the following themes: 1. JOURNEY TO FREEDOM - Students to research and interview their parents, grandparents or relatives on their journeys to freedom. The entry may explore questions such as: Why they risked their life for freedom? What was their journey like? 2. EARLY VIETNAMESE REFUGEE SETTLEMENT IN AUSTRALIA Students to research and interview their parents, grandparents or relatives on their settlement experience in Australia during the late 70's and 80's. The entry may explore questions such as: The challenges they faced and how they overcame them What impact has the Vietnamese community made to Australian society? Entries can be in ONE of the following formats: Essay of 1000 words (word count does not include references or footnotes)

2 Story of up to 1000 words (word count does not include references or footnotes) Audio-visual video clip (maximum 10 minutes) Students are encouraged to source material from interviews about experiences of parents, grandparents, friends or relatives, media sources and individual research conducted online and/or using non-electronic sources such as those found at local libraries. All sources must be acknowledged and the bibliography preferably annotated. All applications and Competition Entry Form must be submitted via , and must be received by 11:59pm 30 December Audio-visual video clip should be provided as an electronic file or uploaded to YouTube and provide an URL. Audio-visual video clip entries MUST be accompanied by a written statement that answers the following questions: How was the research conducted? Why was this format chosen? How does the format relate to the research and the themes? What are the conclusions on the theme? SELECTION PROCESS Stage 1- Audio-visual Video Entries will be assessed based on the following: Relation to the above themes and based on real life experience - 40% Quality of research with evidence artefacts, photos, videos - 40% Presentation - 20% Writing entries will be assessed based on the following: Relation to the above themes and based on real life experience - 35% Quality of research with evidence - 35% Quality of writing - 30% Stage 2 Successful students will be contacted in January Stage 3 Successful entries will be displayed at the VCA Tet Festival and the award ceremony will be held at the Tet Festival February 2018.

4 CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 1. The student must be enrolled for Year 10 to Year 12 in a Victorian registered school in The entry must be substantially the student s own work and have no over assistance from other students, teachers or family members. 3. By entering the competition, students affirm that their entries do not infringe any existing copyright. A student s entry that does infringe copyright will NOT be eligible. 4. By entering the competition you are agreeing that your entry can be used for publicity purposes relating to the competition. 5. The selection panel s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Given the large number of entries expected, individual student feedback will not be available.
