3 Asia Matters for Atlantic Canada Asia is on its way to becoming the main engine of global growth. Asian economies share of global GDP is already higher than Europe s or North America s and it is projected to reach 40% by As Asia grows, per capita income and living standards will rise significantly and Asia s middle class consumption will soon surpass the West s. It is expected that economic growth in,, Indonesia, Vietnam and other Asian countries will cause Asia s share of the world middle class to jump from 28% to 66% by 2030, while that of North America and Europe will shrink from 54% to 21%. This global shift is particularly important for the Atlantic Canada region as most of its history has reflected its connections to the United States and Europe. On the economic front, for example, just before the 2008 financial crisis, the Atlantic Canada region exported less than 5% of its products to Asia. The region s exports to Asia have more than doubled between 2007 and 2009, while exports to the US and Europe have both declined by close to 25%. The region has taken advantage of Asia s growth but it still remains heavily focused on the US market. 60% of the world s population reside in Asia 37% Share of World GDP 1 40% 20% 10% 0% of the world s GDP is currently produced in Asia 5.5% Global Imports 40% 20% 10% 0% Asia Latin America Western Europe Eastern Europe North America Africa & The Middle East GDP growth for Asia is forecast for Asia is rapidly becoming the biggest market in the world and the opportunities are remarkable for Atlantic Canadian companies. Many Asian countries are considered to be emerging markets with broad Canadian interests. Opportunities exist for virtually every industry. For example, Atlantic Canada exports of fish and crustaceans to have increased by more than 4,500% since 2000 and there is still room for growth. In 2013, consumed one-quarter of the world s seafood and as per capita income and consumption increases, s appetite for quality seafood products will grow accordingly. 28% Global Middle Class 8% 18% 7% 7% % 6% More than ever before, Asia matters for Atlantic Canada. 10% 36% 66% Asia Africa & The Middle East North America Europe Latin America 4 5 Source: Brookings Institution, The World Bank, International Money Fund Note 1: Figure is in purchasing power parity (PPP)
