1 Business Meeting MMOPA Annual Convention at The Broadmoor Colorado Springs, CO September 22, 2012 Presenters Tom Kieffer John Hunt Jonathan Sisk Manny Casiano Jack Campbell Tom Kieffer Tom opened the meeting by introducing the Board of Directors to the attendees, with the current roster: Manny Casiano, VP, Safety Chair Jon Sisk, Past-President Bart Bartlett, Academic Chair Jeff Schweitzer, Secretary John Hunt, Marketing Chair Jack Campbell, Treasurer Randy James Mary Bryant Mona Rathmel Jim Yankaskas, Past-President Tom noted that Jim would be rotating off the Board, creating an opening should anybody wish to volunteer for activities to eventually qualify for a Board position. Committee Structure Tom next summarized the Board s current committee structure: Executive Committee, chaired by Tom Kieffer, with members Manny Casiano, Jon Sisk, Jeff Schweitzer, and Jack Campbell Finance Committee, chaired by Jack Campbell, with members Jon Sisk, Manny Casiano, Mona Rathmel, and Mary Bryant Advocacy Committee, chaired by Jon Sisk, with members Randy James, John Hunt, Tom Kieffer and Jim Yankaskas
2 Convention Committee, chaired by Jon Sisk, with members Jeff Schweitzer, Bart Bartlett and Mona Rathmel Academics Committee, chaired by Bart Bartlett, with members Jim Yankaskas, Jon Sisk and Manny Casiano Safety Committee, chaired by Manny Casiano, with members Mary Bryant, Jon Sisk, Jim Yankaskas, as well as Ron Cox Membership Committee, chaired by John Hunt, with members Jon Sisk, Randy James, Mona Rathmel, Mary Bryant, as well as Jeff Dinklage Nominating Committee: Jim Yankaskas, Now Open Governance Committee: Jon Sisk Website Committee: Tom Kieffer Magazine Committee: Tom Kieffer Membership Stats Tom summarized current statistics concerning membership, noting that we have 163 new members in 2011, 832 total members of whom 623 own and fly a PA46, of which there are 31 Matrix, 129 Malibu, 185 Mirage, 158 Meridian and 120 JetProp. Annual Board Meeting Tom reviewed the Board of Directors Annual Meeting held in Charlotte, NC on April 14, 2012, at which the Board discussed, among other items, terms of service for the President and Vice President, issues concerning safety programs and investments and MMOPA s relationship with the MMS&TF, and developing new Voluntary Training Standards (VTS). Magazine and Website MMOPA s contract with the current publisher of the magazine, AJ Publications, expires the second quarter of 2013; at that point MMOPA will discuss with the publisher the future of the magazine. Concerning the website, MMOPA will move to having all administration and communications accomplished via the web. Member Benefits Tom enumerated the many benefits of being a member of MMOPA: o o o o Help from PA46 experts and long-time owners Forums Resource Library Airframe, engine, avionics hotlines
3 o o o o o o Expert Training Directory Quarterly MMOPA Magazine Ombudsman vendor advocacy program Fuel cards Issues advocacy with FAA and coordination with other aviation associations (example unleaded avgas transition) Save $100 s - $1000 s with expert operational & maintenance advice. Budget 2013 Tom reviewed the anticipated budget for 2013, noting the financial health of the organization, and comparing the budget to The budget did not elicit any questions from the audience. Jon Sisk Jon presented the Ombudsman Report, summarized as follows: RACE system vastly under utilized o Four submissions this year o Piper looking for more product improvement ideas o Needs out of warranty info SB coming mid Nov for new fuel senders o Sender only will be available for previously repaired aircraft Meridian oil breather kits o Building about 5 kits per month, order in advance of your need SB1243 for Meridian hydraulic pump o 855 s/n affected o Only 255 complied per warranty forms (7 months of warranty offered) SB1234 Meridian oil cooler temp valve o Part of program to improve oil pump reliability. o Warranty coverage continues o No failures so far among complied aircraft Upgrade Kits o Interior & exterior lighting kits o New seat kits coming soon Parts for PA46 are not at 99% o Figure is for all Piper parts o Aviall situation is much better, Piper is more responsive, more work to do. ipad app o Discussed subscription with Piper
4 o PDF manuals will not disappear when expired Unleaded fuel advocacy o GAMI presentation on G100UL fuel very encouraging. o FAA regulatory process and dysfunction is biggest hurdle, not finding a fuel. This presentation generated the most audience discussion. Members asked Piper representatives about issues concerning new fuel sender units, parts costs and availability (including the high costs of windshields), and new fold down seats. Manny Casiano Manny noted that the VTS effort will be discussed more fully at the accident review in the afternoon. He did mention that the effort is progressing, though it is not as far advanced as originally intended, for several reasons: work levels of the Safety Committee members, changes in the GA community that MMOPA wants to stay aligned with, and discussions with MMSTF for collaboration on how best to disseminate/teach the VTS. The intent is to continue this effort, with a goal of presenting a draft to membership via the website prior to the next convention. Jack Campbell Jack informed attendees that MMOPA was in great financial shape, but that the organization needed to modify its accounting methods to be better aligned with practices of a non-profit organization. Jack will work to transition MMOPA to software designed specifically for non-profits. Jack noted that there are sufficient funds on hand such that the organization should consider additional ways to improve member benefits with these resources. John Hunt John encouraged the membership to remember the best form of marketing is word of mouth; he encouraged member to to recommend the association to any new PA-46 owner. John also suggested that members should take calls from companies such as JetNet, and that such calls are not a scam. JetNet is in the data business and this is a tool the association would be using to help recruit new members. Some members agreed that the calls seemed like marketing, a scam, or some government conspiracy to gather data. Members suggested that the methods and approaches used by JetNet be modified to avoid this impression. John offered to provide this feedback to JetNet when they approach PA-46 owners for data.
