3 Presidential Perspective This month you will see a brief recap and lots of photos of attendees at the concours Afterglow Luncheon on August 13 at the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, starting on page 8. As in past years, this was a terrific event in a superb setting in unbeatable San Diego weather. The luncheon was again hosted by Barbara Bray and her daughter, Diana Shefte. Thanks to you both for your generosity. The Riverwalk Golf Club Brunch will take place on September 9 in Mission Valley, hosted by Nedra Rummell. Hopefully you signed up early enough to be included in the attendees. I am looking forward to the day since Jorgene and I have never visited the club, but we have heard many favorable reviews of the setting. Maybe I ll bring a few of my borrowed golf clubs and continue to dust off my marginal game at the driving range! Please read George Klein s Call for 2018 Nominees for Club Offices and Directors on page 12. Yes, it s that time of year again. I have been your President for 21 months now and I can tell you the time has flown by as fast as Tim Bennett s new F-Type SVR. My second and final term (per club bylaws, Presidents are limited to two terms) will wrap up in December. I have held a number of different positions in support of the club and I can say this is one of the easiest and most rewarding due to the dedicated support of the Board of Directors (BOD) and Functional Chairs. If you are a current or former member of the SDJC BOD, don t hesitate to step up. We are also seeking new Directors to replace Chuck Leuthen and Mark Hodges. Both are stepping down to continue to support SDJC in other roles, Chuck as Newsletter editor (see below) and Mark as Webmaster. Being a Director requires no prior experience on the BOD, merely membership is SDJC, a passion for Jaguars, and a desire and willingness to serve the club. I have a final reminder that the Inland Empire Jaguar Club (IEJC) Jagstravaganza and Concours takes place September in Idyllwild. See pages for details. This is always an enjoyable event in the mountains, even if you aren t a hardcore concours entrant. This is my last edition of Jaguar Tracks as your editor. As noted above, Chuck Leuthen has graciously stepped forward to assume this important role on an interim basis throughout 2017 until he is likely elected to the position. Chuck and Kathy joined SDJC in 2010 and it has been a rare event that they haven t attended, although they live in Orange County and have to contend with I5 traffic to come to most SDJC events. Chuck owns a 1976 XJ6C, a 1993 XJ-S Coupe, and 2002 XK Convertible. Obviously, he is committed to Jaguar and not afraid of jumping into the deep end of the pool headfirst! Please continue to provide an occasional article for inclusion in the Tracks to Chuck. These always add interest and diversity. As Past President and Newsletter Editor Stick Holmes told me when I assumed the role of editor ~18 months ago, I really got to know the club, its members, and events by pulling the newsletter together. Here s to seeing you out and about in your Cats this fall. 3

8 SDJC AFTERGLOW LUNCHEON By Bob Proctor The SDJC celebrated its Afterglow Luncheon on August 13. Once again hosted by club member Barbara Bray and daughter Diana Shefte, and held at the always popular Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club, 59 members came together to celebrate the SDJC Concours d Elegance. Reliving the Concours d Elegance was made easy by Webmaster Mark Hodges, who curated a slide show of all 44 cars from the Champion, Driven, Special, and Display divisions. Photographs taken by Roger McDonald, Devin Hodges, Mark Hodges and Nedra Rummell were used to commemorate the 53 rd annual event. Thank you, Mark and photographers. Members began gathering at 11 a.m. to check in and begin mixing with other club members. The 1929 Luncheon room, where the event was held, overlooked the golf course and the weather was perfect. Diane McDonald had a panoply of raffle gifts and members spent time reviewing the many gift options on the chance that their raffle number might be picked. I had my eye on several sweet gifts and ended up walking away with a great collection of car care items. Score! Roger McDonald, club photographer, surreptitiously weaved his way through the crowds and snapped the great photos accompanying this write-up. Thanks, Roger. Thanks again to Barbara and Diana for hosting the Luncheon. The Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club takes good care of the club when we are there and we always enjoy the experience. 14 JAGUARS AT PEBBLE PEACH Club member Lou Galper, owner of a 1954 XK120, S-Type, 1967 MKII, 1983 XJ6, 1985 XJ6, and 1997 XJ6, at last count on the SDJC roster, was in Monterey the during the week leading up to the Pebble Beach Concours d Elegance on Sunday, August 20. As you can surmise, Lou is a Jaguar guy. He also appreciates other British marques (he has a beautiful Austin Healey that I know of). He sent your editor photos of a selection of Jaguars that he spotted while there. I won t try to provide details of the cars, but in most cases, it should be easy to identify the Jaguar model. I ll let Lou provide details about the cars at an upcoming SDJC event. 14

15 In the Rearview Mirror Speaking of concours past, look below. Several entrants (Curtis Parker and Dick Cavicke) and family members are still involved with the club. After 30 years, that s dedication to the club and Jaguar! 15

18 Notes from the Judges Tent By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club I am very pleased to announce that two newly certified JCNA Concours Judges have joined the SDJC cadre. Nedra Rummell and Jim Singmaster completed their certification training on August 27. After rigorous study on their own and through participation in the San Diego Jaguar Club s formal Concours Judge Training program, they have completed the necessary course of instruction and gained the expected proficiency to merit certification. Training was conducted as required by the JCNA Rule Book. These activities included active participation in three SDJC classes: Concours 101 (Classroom Concours Basics Briefing), Concours 201 (Practice judging under the supervision of the Chief Judge) and Concours 301 (Classroom Refresher Briefing on the contents of the current version of the Rule Book and the content, use and marking of score sheets). They also passed the JCNA 2017 standard Concours Rule Book written test and served as Apprentice Judges during the SDJC 2017 Concours d Elegance, including marking practice score sheets for two class entries. For the Concours 201 session, Nedra was kind enough to host the event at her home. In addition to the two apprentices, Dave Allen (already a certified Judge) provided his beautiful 1987 XJS as one of the two cars for practice judging, the other being my own trusty XJR. Both were judged to Champion Division standards. Dave s was judged first, with no time limit, in order to refresh ourselves on the process and procedures involved, and to provide time for Q&A as we went along with the team judging together each component in turn. Following critique (and more of Nedra s yummy munchies), Dave acted as Team Lead for judging the second car. For this entry, the 15-minute time limit was observed and each participant judged a specific component (interior and boot, exterior, or engine). A final critique of score sheets and Q&A wrapped up a fun and instructive few hours. If reading these notes has sparked some interest on your part in becoming a JCNA Certified Judge, please get in touch with me we can ALWAYS use more judges to make our concours events the wonderful experience for which this club is famous JCNA Concours in the Southwest Region. Here are some established 2017 JCNA Concours of interest to SDJC members. I will update this list as JCNA approves and posts the Concours sanctions requested by the individual clubs. 30 September Inland Empire Jaguar Club Jagstravaganza, Idyllwild, CA 1 October Jaguar Club of Southern Colorado, Colorado Springs, CO 21 October Jaguar Club of Houston, Sugarland, TX 4 November Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona, Tucson, AZ We are aware that a number of our fellow SDJC club members intend to enter and/or judge at the IEJC concours. See you there! If you have any questions about this article or JCNA Judge certification, please contact me by Ernail at: 60Jaguar@gmail.com or (619)
