3 interviewed about Minister Horner's refusal to resign after claims that he was responsible for overseeing Alberta's fleet of planes. Here is a part of the story: 2. Chaldeans Mensah, associate professor of political science at MacEwan University, said it would not surprise him if there were people within the PC party calling for Horner to step down. "I think people realize the seriousness of the situation the party is in. It's understandable that people would be calling for heads to roll," Mensah said. "The auditor general's report has indicated there were serious problems within government. The new leader has to send a signal that he is taking the report seriously," Mensah said. "Anyone associated with the Redford regime, or closely linked with the report of the auditor general, will have to go if the party is to have any chance of being competitive in the next election." Hot days, party time in the city This editorial in the Edmonton Journal talked about the great activities in the city. Here is a part of the editorial that mentions MacEwan University: 3. This past weekend, there was something happening for nearly everybody, representing just three aspects of our diverse community and cultural atmosphere. The Edmonton Folk Music Festival and the Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival drew thousands. At MacEwan University, an entirely different crowd of more than 8,000 people showed up to Animethon 21, a celebration of the Japanese cartoon style and associated activities. 4 Modern-day Dumas finally crosses the Channel Valerie Henitiuk, executive director, Café was interviewed by the Guardian about a series of books by Robert Merle that will be translated into English for the first time. The 13 book series was published between 1977 and Here's a part of the article that includes Valerie's quote: 4. Translated fiction is said to account for barely 1% of sales. But Valerie Henitiuk, former director of the British Centre for Literary Translation, based at the University of East Anglia, said those figures are becoming outdated, with translations now being published in unprecedented numbers. That, she believes, is partly due to people trying to make sense of global influences through literature. The success of Nordic fiction has also influenced publishers, she said. "The message is getting out there." Market Find: Moulding copper into prairie scenes This article is about Kristine MacDonald, who is in her final year of the Design Studies program. The article talks about the unique copper jewelry that she creates in her studio. Here's a part of the story: 5. Entering her final year in MacEwan University's design studies program, MacDonald is majoring in digital media while juggling a full-time job at a coffee shop and finding time to make her jewelry to sell at markets. "Days off are not days off for me," she says. "If I have time off work, I take the train to Mill Woods and work on my jewelry. My dad has every tool you can imagine and together we've made his garage the perfect studio for me to work, so I'll usually be there for eight hours or so." MacEwan University 21/08/2014 Page 4
5 We want you back,' Alberta Tories please with past members interviewed about the provincial Tories pleading with past members to rejoin the party. Here's a part of the story: 6. MacEwan University political scientist Chaldeans Mensah said the membership appeal could be motivated by a "lacklustre" leadership race. "The kind of interest that often accompanies these types of contests isn't there for this one," he said "I think the party is looking at all options to galvanize people to participate in the process." If participation in the vote - slated for Sept. 6 - falls far short of past numbers, it could "put a question mark on whoever wins," Mensah said. "I think the party's a bit desperate on that front to try to bolster their numbers to give legitimacy to the winner of the race." MacEwan University 21/08/2014 Page 5
6 Justin Trudeau, Liberals look to Alberta in 2015 interviewed about the federal liberals chances in Alberta in Here's a part of the story: 7. Chaldeans Mensah, a professor in political science at MacEwan University, says the younger Trudeau needs to overcome his father's hated NEP. "Justin Trudeau is trying to vanquish that ghost of the NEP that has been haunting the party in this province," he said. But he also says some voters are tiring of the Conservatives. "This is really a reaction to longevity of the Tories in power and in some sense, in many of the ridings in the urban centres, the sense that the Tories are taking people for granted," Mensah said. That's something the Liberals are counting on, along with the hope that voters will tie the scandals plaguing the Alberta Progressive Conservatives to the federal Conservatives. Mensah cautions nobody is expecting a flood of Liberal MPs, but says one or two in Alberta would be a big deal. n/a Griffins Coverage n/a MacEwan University 21/08/2014 Page 6
