Many people have been upset by comments Trump has made about women and other groups. Protesters took to the streets to show their dislike of America s new president; and marched to protect the rights of all groups of people under the new president. But Trump s press aide, Sean Spicer, complained about the media constantly trying to undercut the enormous support that he has. On Monday 23 January, Donald Trump began his first working week as president and met lots of important people. He tweeted: Busy week planned with a heavy focus on jobs and national security. Our Prime Minister Theresa May has been invited to be the first world leader to visit President Trump today (Friday) to discuss the relationship between the UK and the US. Today (Friday 27 January), Mr Trump comes to the end of his first week in office, and it s fair to say it s been quite an eventful one! His inauguration (the ceremony where new presidents are sworn in) in Washington DC last week was watched by millions all over the world. While there were lots of people at the event supporting Donald Trump, there were also lots who were against him. Protesters smashed shop and car windows in Washington DC to show their anger at the new president. Over the weekend, Trump turned his attention to the media, accusing the press of not being truthful when reporting on the number of supporters at his inauguration. The president said that television footage and pictures made the crowds look smaller than they actually were, with the press comparing the crowds to Barack Obama s inauguration in 2009, which seemed to have much larger crowds. There are no official crowd figures to go on. Last weekend also saw millions of people all over the world take part in the Women s March. The main event took place in Police officers push back Washington DC on Saturday (21 January), with demonstrators as they protest hundreds of thousands of women and men against Donald Trump marching for equality. 6 AIM OF THE NEWS COMPREHENSIONS News reports are unique non-fiction texts. Being real, they naturally engage children, and with the range of topics that are covered, help to develop pupils knowledge and understanding of the wider world outside the classroom. The reports are ideal for short, focused comprehension or discussion activities. Along with the opportunity to find fascinating facts and appreciate the opinions of those involved, there is plenty to be inferred and deduced to understand in more depth what is being reported. Like authors, journalists play with language, so news stories are rich nuggets of text to investigate and provide the opportunity for a wide range of reading skills to be practised each week. These skills should fit within most schools reading and literacy programmes. TEACHER ANSWER GUIDE The teacher answers are intended to provide a guide to the reading skill each question is practising. Suggestions are given for a STARTING POINT response that pupils could give. Further suggestions then give a fuller, more DEVELOPED RESPONSE that students will work towards to reach and exceed the floor standards required at the end of primary school. For a list of these reading skills used to reference questions, please schools@firstnews.co.uk. The press had compared photos of the event to those of Barack Obama s inauguration. His press aide has said that the media try to undercut the enormous support that he [the president] has. Both these points show that the president and his team seem to think that the press/media are against him rather than reporting the news neutrally. 7) Find two reasons why millions of people took part in a march last Saturday (21 st January).
