The first issue was sent out November of The percentage of those that open this publication continues to rank higher than the national average of such communications. Thank you for your continued interest. I was a junior in high school when I gave my first presentation on the Civil War. I often struggled with speaking in front of my classmates and thought my chest would literally explode from the pounding of my heart. Oddly enough, when sharing stories about the Civil War, I didn't want to sit down when my time was up.

Seeking Michigan: As time passed, I started giving programs to my sibling's history classes too. My program then consisted of hundreds of slides of battlefields and other images of the war. I had also purchased two newspapers from 1863; a January 4 issue of the New York Herald and a January 13 issue of the Daily Dispatch from Ricmond, Virginia as a way to give the students a look back at what was happening at that time in the war. Remember, the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Janyary 1, On the front page of the New York Herald, there is an story about the sinking of the famous ironclad, the U.S.S. Monitor. On the front page of the Daily Dispatch is a section titled, Servants for Sale or Hire. The first ad reads: For Sale - A likely negro GIRL, about 10 years of age, recommended as honest and of a good disposition. She is an excellent nurse and chambermaid and can cook, wash and iron very well for her age. She is sold for no fault and warranted sound and healthy. THOMAS J. NAGBY, Agent for Hiring Negroes, Renting Houses, etc. No. 8 Wall Street, St. Charles Hotel Clearly, and unfortunately, the Emancipation Proclamation had not helped this young girl. On a lighter note, on that same page, there is an advertisement for Smithfield BACON, which is available today in your grocer's meat section. (Smithfield was not the name of the butcher but the name of the city that was founded in 1752 and famous for its hams.) Those two newspapers are still used in my
