1 THE NEWSGUILD-CWA The Voice for Journalists in the Digital Age Darlene Superville, White House Reporter, AP.
2 Who We Are In today s tough media environment, journalists are expected to do so much create content for multiple platforms, build a following on social media, and meet high journalistic standards and to do it all virtually 24/7. Many of the companies we work for would like us to believe the exposure we get is payment enough. We know better. The NewsGuild-CWA has been raising pay and improving employment standards at news organizations big and small, in print and online, for decades. We have the experience and resources to do it. We know that good journalism depends on our Lauren Gambino, Political Correspondent, the Guardian, ability to build careers that covering the Pope s visit to New York, sustain us economically in organizations where the boss respects our craft and recognizes that we have lives outside of work. The NewsGuild is the union that brings us together reporters, editors, photographers, videographers, sales staff, and production people to give us a voice at work; to demand and win more. Join us!
3 What We Do The NewsGuild-CWA has a wealth of experience negotiating contracts that guarantee professional pay, health insurance, retirement benefits, vacation time, sick leave, parental leave, due process and much more. The NewsGuild has close to 20,000 members and is part of the larger Communications Workers of America, one of the most active unions in the country. We keep abreast of trends in the industry from the consolidation of ownership to emerging business models and we advocate for journalists and high-quality journalism. We work with press freedom organizations to defend our right to report free from assault, arrest and intimidation and we defend the people s right to know. We fight to end pay disparities David Carson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch goes to and we demand to know why the extremes to get the shot. nation s most prestigious news organizations still pay women and people of color less than their counterparts. We offer access to up-to-date training to help our members hone their skills so they can remain competitive in a tough job market. We are a community of dedicated, hard-working professionals who seek to tell the truth.
4 The NewsGuild has always been a strong advocate for employees, but in recent years it has also become one of the main defenders of journalism. While corporate owners slash jobs and focus on dollars, the Guild fights to preserve jobs and remind corporations that journalism is a public trust, not a profit center. David Carson, Pulitzer-Prize Winning Photographer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch I can t think of a better way for employees to look out for their own interests. I don t care how benevolent management is, their interests will always come first. The NewsGuild helps us win fairer contracts and better working conditions than we could ever negotiate individually. Darlene Superville, White House Reporter, AP I worked most of my adult life without union protections, and I know what it s like to have my job description and responsibilities change without warning, negotiation, or a raise. So when the opportunity to join The NewsGuild came up, it was a no-brainer. Brendan Skwire, Video Producer, Raw Story I became active in our union because I care deeply about two things: promoting quality journalism and ensuring that workers have the quality-of-life needed to produce it. The NewsGuild has served as an incredible resource as we study contract issues. What are comparable news organizations paying their staffers? What retirement plans do they offer? Do they have paid parental leave? You re in good company with the Guild. Jill Bleed, Reporter, Associated Press
