The efforts of these dedicated reporters have brought to light, often for the first time, issues that affect us all. Many of these stories have, through the concern and often outrage of our readers, formed the basis for change in our community. A Partial Overview of the Star s Recent Investigative Reports Temporary Workers The Star s undercover investigation into an industrial bakery, where a 23 year-old temp agency worker died, revealed how temps are uniquely vulnerable to accidents, injury and abuse. Chemical Exposure An investigation into a General Electric factory in Peterborough revealed workers routinely handled highly toxic substances for decades. The province s compensation board is now reviewing 250 previously denied occupational cancer claims made by former employees. Police Oversight Law enforcement s use of force, and allegations of secretive practices by police watchdogs have been a focus of the Star s dogged reporters. The community and several news organizations are now engaged. Unpaid Restaurant Workers Some restaurant employees and suppliers weren t being paid fairly due to poor provincial enforcement. The Star s investigative report revealed some restaurateurs ignored complaints. Oneyearlater, theministryof Labour increased convictions by 40%. Food at Nursing Homes Ontario s nursing homes residents will receive better, fresher food thanks to new funding from the province. Panama Papers Star reporters worked with a team of international journalists to expose offshore tax secrecy through deep exploration of over 11 million leaked documents. Ghost Hotel The Star toured apartments listed on Airbnb after tenants said they were forced out by rent hikes and intimidation. Airbnb and the city acted quickly, shutting down the account and ordering renovated units to be closed. Homeless Deaths With the exception of a few municipalities in Ontario, no official governing body tracked the number of deaths caused by homelessness. After a Star investigation, Toronto Public Health introduced a tracking initiative this year. In just nine months, 70 deaths have been recorded. Mercury Poisoning The Star put a face to the generations of people sickened by the contaminated water supply in the First Nation community of Grassy Narrows. The series, which began in 2016, prompted the province to fund a cleanup. Campus Sexual Assault Mandatory policies about how Ontario s colleges and universities deal with allegations of sexual assault on campus will be in place this fall,in part due to the Star s action as a voice for victims.
