1 Submitted by: Jeffrey J. Stoltman, Interim Vice President Marketing and Communications MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS REPORT Media Relations A Detroit News article on May 27 noted that the university has initiated a facilities master plan process. The article quoted Board of Governors Chairwoman Denise Lewis. 'We're excited by the master plan, because we have a great track record as displayed by our wonderful campus, but we do need a blueprint for the future," she said. President Reid stressed the importance of making informed development decisions well into the next century. "We want the plan in place before dollars are attached to any project. We are strong supporters of Detroit, and we want to know the best way of meeting our anticipated needs." he said. The Detroit News May 7 carried a story and photo by Rusty Hoover about President Irvin Reid's first months in office. Wayne State University's new president has been quietly working to repair relationships with the faculty and to improve communications, two key areas identified by the Board of Governors when he was hired late last year. The decision by the Board of Governors to cut tuition for students in Ontario and northern Ohio resulted in numerous articles and stories in the region, starting with a Detroit Free Press story on April 29 picked up by the Associated Press and circulated widely. The Windsor Star, Toronto Globe and Mail and the Toledo Blade followed up with interviews with WSU Vice President William Markus. Local radio and TV ran numerous stories April 29. The Chrysler-Daimler Benz merger has resulted in many media stories quoting Wayne State University experts. Charles Hyde, a professor of history and an expert on Chrysler's history, was quoted twice in the Detroit Free Press, with a page 1 article May 7 and another May 12. He did an interview with a crew for the national NBC Evening News May 7 and also for TV2's Fox evening news broadcast that day. BOARD OF GOVERNORS AGENDA June 10, 1998
2 WWJ-AM May 6 did a morning drive-time interview with Doug Fraser, university professor of labor studies in the College of Urban, Labor and Metropolitan Affairs, who commented on his reaction to a news report that Chrysler Corporation and Daimler-Benz will merge. He said he was more concerned about what such a merger would mean for Chrysler workers than he was about other aspects of the business deal. A May 8 Detroit News story quotes Mark Ferguson, professor of German and Slavic studies, saying, "There is a long history of a connection between Germany and Metro Detroit. In the 1920s the Germans came over here to study what they called 'Fordism' -- assembly-line processes and other production methods." Ferguson directs a Wayne State program, established in 1953 that sends students to Munich for their junior year. ''The last few years, students of German have changed their focus from classical literature to using the language in business and industry," he said. "Companies in the area are calling me all the time asking for people who can speak German. And I just never have enough students to fill the positions." Journalism professor Richard Wright wrote a story in the May 8 Detroit News auto section saying that the auto industry began in Germany and it was Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz who started it a decade before the first American car, the Duryea, went into production. Cable News Network (CNN) also carried opinions from WSU experts. Anthropology Chair Marietta Baba did a two-page opinion piece on the role of anthropology in corporate culture for the Chronicle of Higher Education on Maya. The Oakland Press May 6 carried a front page feature story by Diana Dillaber Murray on twin sisters Hiroko and Akiko Shimazu of Troy, who graduated from WSU May 5. The story includes a four-column photo of the sisters with a cutline that prominently mentions Wayne State University. It also mentions that a brother is enrolled at WSU as a fashion merchandising student and that there are more than 7,000 WSU students from Oakland County registered at wsu. The Detroit News May 12 carried a story on a shortage of teachers due to retirements and indicated Wayne State University is ranked seventh nationally in the preparation of educators. Eastern Michigan University was ranked first, Western Michigan University ranked second. The Milwaukee Business Journal May 11 noted that David Adamany, former president of Wayne State University, has been named to a blue ribbon panel on campaign finance reform appointed by Gov. Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin. 2
3 The Funeral for Winter April 9 was covered by print media, television and radio. TV-2 carried two live promotional teasers at 8:10 and 8:20 a.m. and a two-minute live segment at 8:30 a.m. Reporter Lee Thomas interviewed Miss Spring, who sang with 01' Man Winter in his casket playing the keyboard. Music Professor Chris Collins and Steve Xantheas of the Circa 1890 offered commentary about the history of the event. A photo appeared in the Detroit Free Press on April 10 and several stories with photos appeared in the C&G Newspapers (Macomb County) and in the South End. Professor Allen Goodman of the Economics Department was interviewed for the 5 p.m. news by WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) on April 9. He addressed the economic comparisons of present-day life compared to ''the good old days," concluding that ''these are the good old days." Prof. Allen Nicholson, Biological Sciences, did a phone interview during drivetime February 19 on the Mark Scott Show on WXYT-AM discussing the characteristics and effect on humans of anthrax and bubonic plague. The show requested an expert in the wake of the announcement of the arrest of two men in Nevada accused of having the killer viruses in their possession. Nicholson also was interviewed on WYUR-AM that evening. Marketing Communications Publications The President's Congratulations Card was mailed to the May 1998 graduates. Invitations were designed and printed for the 16th Annual Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award Ceremony. The ceremony, honoring this year's recipient, The Honorable Damon J. Keith, was held at Community Arts Auditorium on June 5, The Inaugural Schedule of Events announcements were mailed to the external invitation list the week of May 25, Advertisements - Television WSU commercials aired during the first round of the Stanley Cup Quarter Finals on WKBD-TV on April 30. WSU commercials aired on CBC-Windsor from May 1-15.The commercials ended with a banner advertising the WSU-Windsor Educational Fair held on May 16, WSU commercials aired in the Toledo area FOX-36 from May Advertisements - Radio WSU had radio spots on the following Canadian stations advertising the Windsor Educational Fair, CIMX/CIDR (Windsor) and CFPL and CFHK (London). 3
4 On May 16th, between noon and 2 p.m., CIMX was on site at the WSU/Windsor Educational Fair with their mobile van and a CIMX radio personality. They did four 60-second live breaks during this time. Information regarding the WSU/Windsor Educational Fair was mentioned a total of 15 times from Wednesday - Friday of the week before our event. While on site, they passed out prizes to people and encouraged listeners, through call-ins to come out and take part in the fair. WSU commercials aired in the Toledo area from May advertising the instate tuition offered to the four counties of northern Ohio. Advertisements - Print Wayne State University's Connectivity ad appeared on the back page of the Detroiter Magazine (June issue) that was distributed at the May Chamber of Commerce Legislative Weekend at Mackinac Island. WSU's ad appeared in Windsor Star newspaper advertising the WSU/Windsor Educational Fair on May 2 and 9. WSU's Connectivity ad appeared in the Toledo Blade on May 31. The ad contained an announcement of the in-state tuition rate offered to Williams, Fulton, Lucas and Ottawa counties in Ohio. Advertisements- Newspaper Insertion and Direct Mail A 11 "x 17", four-page newspaper insert in the Detroit News Agency papers was distributed the week of June 1 to approximately 80,000 homes. Its purpose was to put a list of WSU program offerings and an application in the hands of metro-area residents. In concert with the newspaper insertions there was a comparable direct mail piece mailed to approximately 217,000 homes. Again the purpose of this distribution is to get in the hands of the area residents, the extensive list of WSU programs and an application form. The effectiveness of these vehicles will be tracked and reported. Displays A 1 0'x1 0' photo display expressing the diversity of programs and people that give vitality to WSU was created for the WSU/Windsor Education Fair featuring Wayne State University's Connectivity to Ontario, Canada. Event Promotion At the Detroit Grand Prix, June 5, 6, and 7, WSU connectivity commercials were shown on the video display screen on the track during the race. Wayne State University also had a large 1 0' x 40' banner sign displayed in the top position on the race track's video screen. 4
