7 7 SPEAKERS Asun Gomez Bueno Chairwoman of the News Committee, Head of International Partnerships & Planning (TVE) Asun graduated with a degree in journalism from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid and has been working for Spanish Television, TVE, since She is currently Head of International Partnerships & Planning for the News Service and was previously Director of TVE s 24 Hours news channel. Prior to this, she was Head of TVE s News Exchange & News Gathering. In 2011, Asun was elected as chairwoman of the EBU News Committee. She is also a member of the News Xchange editorial team and, since 2004, of the OMEC of Barcelona Autonomous University, and COPEAM. Petr Dvorak Director General (CT) Petr is the CEO of Czech Television, the public service broadcaster in the Czech Republic. Previously, he served as senior vice-president of the Broadcasting Division of Central European Media Enterprises (CME). He was also CEO of CET 21, the operating company of TV NOVA channels in the Czech Republic and served on the boards of CME s operating companies in the CEE region. Petr Dvorak graduated in 1989 from the Czech Technical University in Prague and in 1999 he was awarded an MBA from the University of Chicago.
8 8 Jeff Jarvis Professor and Director (CUNY Graduate School of Journalism) Jeff is the author of Public Parts: How Sharing in the Digital Age Improves the Way We Work and Live; What Would Google Do? and the Kindle single Gutenberg the Geek. He blogs about media and news at Buzzmachine.com and co-hosts the podcast This Week in Google. He is professor and director of the Tow-Knight Centre for Entrepreneurial Journalism at the City University of New York s Graduate School of Journalism. He advises media companies, start-ups, and foundations and is a public speaker. Until 2005, he was president and creative director of Advance. net, the online arm of Advance Publications. Prior to that, Jeff was creator and founding editor of Entertainment Weekly; Sunday editor and associate publisher of the New York Daily News; TV critic for TV Guide and People; a columnist on the San Francisco Examiner; and assistant city editor and reporter for the Chicago Tribune. Markus Mörchen Senior Editor of children s news programme logo! (ZDF) Markus is Senior Editor of logo!, the only daily TV news bulletin for children in Germany. The programme has won several awards, such as Deutscher Fernsehpreis 2010 (best information programme), the EMIL 2013 (best website for children) and the Prize for Best Language Markus studied in Siegen and Houston/Texas, completed editorial training at Deutsche Welle and has worked as producer, presenter and reporter for various TV and radio stations in Germany, England and Namibia. Markus Mörchen is a contributor to a workbook on media studies and also lectures at international seminars for journalists.
9 9 Ronald Bartlema Chief Editor of children s news programme Jeugdjournaal (NOS) Ronald has been head of the children s news programme Jeugdjournaal at Dutch news broadcaster, NOS, since Jeugdjournaal has two daily news bulletins, seven days a week, for children in the Netherlands and has won several awards. It is the second such news programme for children in Europe, having launched in 1981, after BBC s Newsround. It aims to bring the main news to all Dutch children in the target group 9 12 years by offering news and background stories without taboo. Petr Kopecky Editor of children s news programme Zpravivcky (CT) Originally educated in economics and journalism, Petr has been editor of the children s news programme Zprávičky since During his 25 years experience at Czech TV he has worked as reporter, news editor, anchorman, foreign correspondent and editor of journalistic documents.
10 10 Tommy Zwicky Editor of children s news programme Ultra Nyt (DR) Tommy obtained his degree in journalism in He spent the early years of his career working in broadcast news and investigative journalism, after which he developed current affairs and consumer programmes for young adults. In 2009 he joined the Children & Youth Department at DR where he has produced and developed a variety of formats. Since 2012 he has been the editor of the children s daily news bulletin, Ultra Nyt, as well as a number of short documentaries. He has won the two Danish TV awards for Best Children s Programme (Nerds adventures, 2011) and Best New Format (Ultra Nyt, 2014). Richard Sambrook Professor of Journalism and Director of the Centre for Journalism (Cardiff University) Richard is a professor of journalism and director of the Centre for Journalism that provides postgraduate vocational training. He is a former director of Global News at the BBC where he worked as a journalist, producer, editor and manager. He has been a visiting fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University where he undertook research into the future of international newsgathering and the place of impartiality and objectivity in the digital world. He is also chairman of DMA-Media, a media services and production company, and chairman of the International News Safety Institute.
11 11 Kevin Sutcliffe Head of News Programming in Europe (Vice News) Kevin is a multiple-award winning television executive responsible for delivering high-profile, hard-hitting and talked-about factual television and online content with a track record of developing original ideas. He has produced hundreds of hours of bespoke factual content weekly, daily and long-term projects; immersive documentaries, undercover investigations, talent-led programmes, series, live shows, cinema-released documentary and online content. In senior roles at the BBC and Channel 4, programmes he has made and commissioned, regularly hit the headlines and have won over 100 national and international awards including numerous BAFTA, RTS, DuPont, Banff honours, along with the International Emmy in consecutive years 2009 and Kevin joined VICE in 2013 as Head of News Europe and was responsible for launching the critically acclaimed VICE News channel across the region, commissioning films and reports from Syria, South Sudan, Ukraine, Venezuela, Thailand, Egypt, and many other places. Saam Kapadia Executive Editor (svt) Saam is executive editor in the News & Current Affairs Department of Swedish Television. He is in charge of the foreign news report programme Korrespondenterna (The Correspondents) and is the executive producer for SVT documentaries. He also works with programme development for broadcast and online for SVT News & Current Affairs. Saam is a former foreign correspondent for SVT and was awarded the Swedish Grand Prize for Journalism for his television reporting of the Kosovo War in 1999.
12 12 Ingrid Thörnqvist Head of Foreign News (SVT) Ingrid has 30 years experience in foreign news, mostly at Swedish Television, working with the main national news programmes. Previously, she was a foreign correspondent based in Vienna and Berlin, covering the fall of communism, from Solidarnost to the fall of the Berlin Wall (Ich war dabei!). She is Head of International News since 2000, sending correspondents to cover trouble spots in the world. Ingrid is also an advocate for constructive and social journalism. Atte Jääskeläinen Director of News & Current Affairs (YLE) Atte is director of News, Current affairs, Sport & Regional Programming at the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. He is responsible for the News & Current Affairs division that produces journalism on all platforms: radio, television, web and mobile. 57% of Finns consider Yle to be the leading news organization in the country. A lawyer by training, Atte Jääskeläinen has been working in journalism and media content since 1995, with a special focus on change management. His professional specialties are journalism, multimedia news processes and distribution, sports rights, and newsroom management.
13 13 Benoit Balon-Perin Digital Workflows Manager (RTBF) Benoit has been working for RTBF as a journalist for over 30 years. He has held the positions of reporter, presenter, editor-in-chief, head of TV News & Sport, and director of Operations at RTBF, Belgium. His most recent challenge is to define the most efficient workflows in the digital world, especially for News. Benoit has been a member of the EBU News Committee since In 2011, he was elected vice-chairman of the News Committee and chairman of the News Technology Subcommittee. Tomas Sponar Project Manager (CT) Tomas is project manager in the News Department of Czech Television. With experience as a reporter for Czech national daily newspapers, he started working on the foreign desk of Czech Television in the mid-1990s. At Czech Television, he ran the Slovakia foreign bureau, being in charge of operations in Austria and Hungary and worked as a correspondent. With a change toward the new challenges of digitization and fresh branding of Czech TV, he accepted new responsibilities as a project manager and took part in redesigning CT24 and the main evening news programme Udalosti on CT1. His team is in charge of prime-time coverage from pre-election and election events in the Czech Republic and other important topics.
14 14 Sara Alonso New Media Manager (EBU) Sara has been New Media Manager at Eurovision since 2012, in charge of various Eurovision distribution platforms and developing new concepts. These platforms include satellite, internet broadcast-quality delivery, VOD and live streaming. She has held various positions in her 14 years at the EBU. Before that, Sara worked as a TV journalist, including Euronews, Canal Plus, CNN and NBC, starting her career working in Spain for radio, Cadena Ser, and the newspaper El Mundo. Tony Loughran Director (ZeroRisk International) Tony is a an ex commando and a former head of BBC s High Risk Safety & Security team. Tony has more than 30 years experience working in high risk news operations. He currently works throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, & South America and has an enviable network of intelligence gatherers, field security specialists, and hostile environment trainers. Tony has over 10 years experience working with the EBU.
15 15 Juana Lahousse Juarez Director-General of DG Communication (EP) Juana has been the Director-General for Communication at the European Parliament since Previously, she has worked as Director-General for Translation; Director of Communication at the DG for Information; Chairwoman of the Equal Opportunities Committee (COPEC); Director of Infrastructure & Internal Services; Interpreter, etc. Juana holds a graduate degree in Pedagogy and in Interpreting from the Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes. Fernando Carbajo Head of the Audiovisual Unit (EP) Fernando is in charge of a team that produces the Parliament s news and broadcasts the plenary and committee works. Fernando and his team provide media professionals with technical assistance and facilities to produce programmes related to the Parliament s agenda. He is a member of the European Parliament s Editorial Committee, ensuring the liaison with radio and television organizations, such as the EBU, CIRCOM and Euranet. He holds degrees in journalism (BA) and European Studies & Administration (MA). Since 1979 he has served in several press-related academic and administrative posts in Madrid, Bruges, Luxembourg and Brussels.
16 16 Ulrik Haagerup Executive Director of News (DR) Ulrik is news director at Danish national broadcaster, DR. Previously, Ulrik worked as a consultant in leadership, strategy and media convergence in Europe and the USA, and as editor-in-chief of Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten and Nordjyske Media. Ulrik Haagerup is a John S. Knight Fellow from Stanford University, former chairman of the Institute of Journalism at the University of Odense, member of WEF Global Agenda Council on the Future of Journalism, and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. In 1990 he received the Cavling Prize, the Danish equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. In 2004 he published his book A Good Idea Did You Get it? on the need for innovation and change in a globalized world. In 2008 he introduced the concept of constructive news in the Danish press and published a book in 2012 arguing in favour of better journalism for the benefit of society. The book was recently published in English. In 2012 Ulrik received the Order of the Dannebrog from Danish Queen Margrethe II. Olov Carlsson Executive Director of News and Sports (SVT) Olov is executive director of News & Sports at Swedish National Television, SVT. Olov has worked as a journalist, editor, and in other senior positions in radio, newspaper and commercial television since the early 1990s. He has been employed at SVT since 2005.
17 17 Helle Hedegaard Hein Lecturer at Copenhagen Business School Helle is a self-employed researcher, keynote speaker and consultant. She is a holder of MSc and PhD degrees. Her main areas of expertise include the motivation and leadership of specialists; creativity in the workplace and talent development in highly specialized organizations. Helle s field studies include the Danish National Hospital and the Danish Royal Theatre. IngolF GabolD Development Executive (EyeWorks) Ingolf is currently Development Executive in Eyeworks Scandi Fiction, being responsible for the development of scripts and writers in the Eyeworks writers pool. Previously, he headed the Danish Broadcasting Corporation s Drama Department. With his producers and writers, he obtained several prizes for their famous TV series: Prix Italia for The Serbian Dane (2001); Emmy for Unit One (2002); Emmy for Nikolaj and Julie (2003); Emmy for The Eagle and Young Andersen (2005); Emmy for The Protectors (2009); Prix Italia for Borgen (2011); Bafta for The Killing (2011); Bafta for Borgen (2012). Ingolf is also the winner of the Prix Europa Lifetime Achievement Award.
18 18 Monica Maggioni Director (RAI News 24) Monicais the Director of Rainews24. She studied at the Catholic University of Milan and the School of radio and TV journalism in Perugia. She has worked for Euronews ( ) and since 1996 she has been working for RAI. She covered the Second Intifada ( ), the attack on the World Trade Centre (2001), Operation Iraqi Freedom ( ) and Barack Obama`s election (2008). She is a contributor to various Italian and international print media, e. g. Foreign Policy. She has received many awards, including the Biagio Agnes award for news reports from war zones in She is the author of Dentro la guerra (2005) and La fine della verità (2006). Khazar Fatemi Journalist & Filmmaker Khazar was born in Kurdish Iran and brought up in Afghanistan and lives today in Sweden. Khazar has been working as a broadcast journalist for Sweden s largest news network, SVT. During that time she has been involved with the country s top-rated news program, Rapport. She has a wide range of experience covering both local and foreign news. Her latest international reports were done from Afghanistan Syria, and Iraq. In addition to her work as a journalist, Khazar is also an up-and-coming filmmaker. Her first feature documentary, Where My Heart Beats has been translated into four different languages and screened by BBC, SVT, ZDF, Al Arabyia and many more channels. She is currently working on her next documentary about the demale fighters in Kurdistan.
19 19 Guillaume Debré Journalist (TF1) After completing a law degree, a diploma from the Institut des Etudes Politiques in Paris, and a master s degree in international relations from the University of Columbia in New York, he worked for five years as a journalist for CNN. His missions have included Iraq, Haiti, and covering the presidential election in He has also served as a correspondent for TF1 and LCI in Washington. Guillaume is also the author of Obama, Les secrets d une victoire, which tells behind-the-scenes stories of the 2008 presidential campaign. Nyani Quarmyne Photographer Nyani is a freelance photographer currently based in Ghana. Quarmyne s work centres on human issues and on social justice themes in particular. Coming from a multicultural background spanning Africa and the West, he inhabits the space between these two worlds and frequently finds himself treading the line between the desire to deliver a more honest and nuanced portrayal of Africa, and the constrained expectations of the Western media machine.
20 20 Bernd Hagenkord Head of German Section (Radio Vatican) Bernd has been Head of the German section of Vatican Radio since Since 1992, he has been a member of the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church and a priest. Bernd has undertaken studies in journalism, philosophy and history in Hamburg and Munich, as well as theology in London. William Echikson Head of Communications & Public Affairs for Free Expression in Europe, Middle East and Africa (Google) In his role, William is responsible for leading the company s outreach on its Transparency Report and in its relations with international organizations. Before joining Google almost four years ago, William worked as European foreign correspondent for a series of US publications including the Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and Business Week. From 2002 to 2007, he managed the Brussels bureau for Dow Jones as bureau chief. William also has written, directed and produced television documentaries for America s Public Broadcasting Service. He has published four books of narrative non-fiction, including a work on the collapse of communism and the history of the Bordeaux wine region. He graduated from Yale College with a Magna Cum Laude degree in history.
21 21 Paul Myers Internet Research Specialist (BBC) Paul s role in the BBC Academy sees him organize and deliver training courses related to internet investigation, data journalism, freedom of information, reporting statistics, working with social media, web design and image production. Paul joined the BBC in 1995 as a news information researcher. Paul also trains from the inside, augmenting programme teams and sharing his specialist knowledge with journalists. His techniques have helped his colleagues develop creative approaches to research, conduct their investigations securely and have led many journalists to information they would never have otherwise been able to find. He has worked on leading programmes, such as Panorama, Watchdog, national news bulletins, BBC Online, local and national radio, and the World Service. Paul runs the Internet Research Clinic, a website dedicated to directing journalists to the best research links, apps and resources.
