1 CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS? Making the media work for you What? A series of lectures and workshops to help communications professionals within the Church and Not-for-Profits increase their skills and discuss and resolve some of their relevant challenges. When? July 14, from 9.30 for registrations, 10 am start Where? Tenison Woods Room, MacKillop Place, North Sydney. Who Should Attend? Church and N-F-P employees who might have come into their communications roles without any formal training and to assist them perform those roles in a more polished and professional manner. (To ensure that there will be a maximum impact for those participating, the numbers for the CathNews Media Training Day are limited and bookings will be accepted on a first first come, first served basis.) How much? The training day costs $125, including morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and wine at lunch, kindly provided by Sevenhill Cellars, as well as a chance to win a top of the range Apple ipad 2 tablet computer, with Wi-fi and 3G, and 64gb of storage space, worth more than $900! Why is this being offered by Church Resources through CathNews? For 12 years, CathNews has aggregated stories about Catholics and the Catholic Church around Australia. Many of the stories carried on CathNews have related to crises which have had to be managed. This media training day brings together a number of skilled media professionals who have worked in newspapers, magazines, television, radio, public relations, and the electronic media for decades belong to the CN faith-based Communications team to help you manage your own challenges. In their roles, they have all dealt successfully with the full panoply of media crises and are keen to share their experiences and insights. Who is on the programme? Three well-respected media professionals have been invited as guest speakers for the training day: They are Peter Fray, publisher at Fairfax; Rose Hesp, executive producer of Compass, and Chris Zinn, director of campaigns and media spokesperson for Choice. After lunch, eight workshops will be offered. The moderators of those workshops will include the publisher of CathNews, CathNews Perspectives and Christian News
2 Online, Christine Hogan; CathNews editor-in-chief,michael Visontay; founding editor of CathNews and current editor of Eureka Street, Michael Mullins; the Director of Australian Catholic Office for Film & Broadcasting, Fr Richard Leonard sj; the editor of The Parish Bulletin Newsletter, the Parish Bulletin, and WYD Prayer Newsletter: The Road to Madrid, Anthony Neylan; and the sales manager for faith-based publications at Church Resources, Peter Horton. (See pages four to seven for biographies) The workshop will be in four strands, as follows: Strand 1 Michael Visontay: (i) How the media cycle works; (ii) How to tailor your message and write a media release Strand 2 Michael Mullins: (i) Ethics of crisis comms; (ii) Basic blogging skills Strand 3 (i) (ii) Strand 4 (i) (ii) Fr Richard Leonard sj: How to speak to your Bishop/CEO; Christine Hogan: Managing through a crisis when to speak, what to say, and when to shut very up Anthony Neylan: Communicating with the grass roots; Peter Horton: Effective tips for selling advertising into your diocesan publication Please note that each workshop can take only people. 4 Our Guest Speakers Peter Fray Publisher/Editor-in-Chief - Sydney Publishing Peter was appointed Publisher/Editor-in-Chief in February of this year, following on from his appointment as Editor-in- Chief of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald in Before becoming editor of The Sydney Morning Herald in January 2009, Peter edited both The Canberra Times and The Sunday Age (not at the same time), and prior to that was the Deputy Editor of The Sun-Herald. He has held various reporting and editing roles over a career spanning 25 years. These include European correspondent (London-based) for The SMH and The Age, Spectrum editor (SMH), news editor (The SMH, The Sunday Age), political correspondent (The Bulletin). He first joined The Herald in 1987, leaving in 1990, to become a foundation member of Rural Press's Australian Rural Times. He rejoined The Herald in 1995 as religious writer. He enjoys family, theatre, fine wine and fishing. He is a graduate of the NIDA playwrights studio, Curtin University and Hants Agricultural College. He once worked as a pig farmer. Christopher Zinn Director of Campaigns and Communications for CHOICE Christopher Zinn is Director of Campaigns and Communications for CHOICE, the Australian Consumers Association. Prior to joining CHOICE, Christopher was a print and broadcast journalist in Australia and the United Kingdom for 25 years. His big break in Australian television came when he was employed as reporter on Ten s Inside Edition with Peter Luck early in the 1990s. His career since that programme has bloomed. Christopher went on to work as a reporter/producer on two ABC TV series for features and documentaries; the awardwinning environmental series A Question of Survival and the social affairs weekly program, Living in the Nineties. Immediately prior to CHOICE, Christopher was a producer and reporter for the ABC s The 7.30 Report and history program, Rewind. He has also worked at Channel 9 where he was a reporter on the Today on Saturday program and a producer on the Sunday program.
5 For many years Christopher was the Australian correspondent for the Guardian and Daily Telegraph newspapers in London and he is a founding member of the Foreign Correspondents Association of Australia. Rose Hesp Rose Hesp is the Executive Producer of ABC-TV s Compass. She joined the program in 2005 and previously worked as a documentary writer, producer and director. Rose has a Bachelor of Arts degree, an MA Documentary (AFTRS) and worked for 15 years as a television news and current affairs journalist before turning to documentary film-making. She loves heading up Compass. "It's a program about religion, belief and ethics, in all their forms and effects. It's about the search for meaning and the codes by which we live our lives. It's reflective. It's about life's big questions. We get to tell those stories. What could be better than that?" says Rose. Our Workshop Facilitators Fr Richard Leonard, sj Rev Dr Richard Leonard SJ directs the Australian Catholic Office for Film & Broadcasting. In 1994 he was apprenticed to Albert Street Productions where he wrote, produced and directed documentary films for Australian television. In 1996 Richard undertook the graduate course in film production at the London Film School, Covent Garden. In 2004, he graduated with a PhD in cinema studies from Melbourne University. In 2003, he was a visiting scholar within the School of Theatre, Film & Television at UCLA. In 2006, 2008, and 2010, Dr Leonard was a visiting professor at the Gregorian University in Rome. Since 2007 he has been an honorary fellow of the Australian Catholic University. Fr Richard is a member of the Australian Catholic Media Council and a film critic for all the major Australian Catholic newspapers. He has served on juries at the Venice, Berlin, Hong Kong, Montreal, Brisbane and Melbourne International Film Festivals. He is the author of: The Mystical Gaze of the Cinema: the Films of Peter Weir (Melbourne University Press); Movies That Matter: Reading Film Through the Lens of Faith (Loyola Press, Chicago), Preaching to the Converted (Paulist Press). His latest book is Where the Hell is God? Finding God in Pain and Suffering (Paulist Press). 6 Christine Hogan The publisher at Church Resources, Christine is responsible for the organisation s faith-based publications which include CathNews and CathNews Perspectives. A 30 year-plus veteran of the Australian media, she has worked in newspapers, television, and magazines and now works in digital media. A former deputy editor of The Australian Women s Weekly and Good Weekend in The SMH, she edited Portfolio The Magazine for Working Women for Fairfax Magazines, and then helped with the Fairfax make-over of Ms. magazine in the US. She has been the head of publicity for the Ten Network, and was the founding producer of Inside Edition with Peter Luck and Meet the Press on the same network. Christine is also the author of five books, including Look at Me, the history of women in Australian television, and The Veiled Lands: A woman s journey to the heart of the Islamic world. Christine serves as a member of the Australian Catholic Media Council. Michael Vistontay A former managing editor at The Sydney Morning Herald and Deputy Editor of The Sun-Herald, Michael has been a journalist, editor and writer for more than 25 years. Currently, he is Editorin-Chief of CathNews and CathNews Perspectives. Michael also lectures in media at the UNSW and UTS, is a regular commentator on 2BL and recently ghost-wrote The Happiest Refugee, the best-selling memoir of comedian Anh Do. Michael Mullins Now the editor of Eureka Street, Michael was the founding editor of CathNews and ran it from 1999 to He continues to work with the CathNews and CathNews Perspectives team. He has worked in religious communications for 20 of the past 25 years, including Catholic Communications Melbourne and ABC Radio religious programs, and taught media ethics at Sydney University (2010).
7 Anthony Neylan Anthony is editor of The Parish Bulletin Newsletter and Bulletin Notes, a weekly service to Catholic parishes in Australia and helps maintain the Parish Secretaries Forum which enables parish secretaries to share resources. During the past 20 years, Anthony has been involved in adult faith formation, i.e. parish renewal, parish pastoral councils, small Scripture/prayer groups, and young adult ministry. His earlier career involved service in the Australian Diplomatic Service and the World Bank, Washington DC. Peter Horton Peter Horton has been involved in business-to-business (B2B) sales and account management for more than 15 years in the logistics, business software and advertising industries. Most recently he spent 10 years as a senior account manager with Sensis managing the advertising needs of small to medium sized businesses. In the past six months at CR Peter has significantly increasedthe monthly advertising revenue from CathNews and established a market for CathNews Perspectives.
