1 Hampton Roads Republican Women s Club Newsletter June 2016 President s Message W ell, the month of May zipped by and calmed down a bit after the re-election of Pat Woodbury. Everyone who worked on the campaign took a well deserved breather. Pat and Lou Call joined a delegation of the Newport News Sister Cities trip to Griesfwald, Germany and had a wonderful vacation. I am sure they will tell us all about it at our July meeting and maybe share some pictures with us. We managed to squeeze in a very interesting May meeting despite the rain and a number of members away for graduations, weddings and other family functions. We had a small but engaged group listen to Jennifer Lee, the newly elected 3 rd District Chairwoman discuss the workings of Mass Meetings and Conventions. She fielded plenty of questions and called me afterwards to thank us for our interest and our questions. I am sure we will have Jennifer again throughout the year, as we are now officially a club in the 3 rd Congressional District. Also speaking was Jacqueline F. Hawkins, Project Director for Center for Bio-Ethical Reforms, ProLife on Campus. Although she only had a brief time, she showed a powerful presentation with an interesting take on getting the Republican Philosophy across to students on the college campuses. I promised her to have her back again to give a more detailed presentation and update on their progress, as we gave her many leads for speaking engagements and donors to their cause. I would like those who missed her presentation to have an opportunity to hear her speak again. This coming month will be another challenging one as far as meetings go. The summer months make it a little more difficult for us to gather but we will have a meeting on June 25, 2016 at Vintner s Cellar at 10:00 AM. Marty Williams, Republican candidate for 3 rd District Congressional seat will be our speaker. He is mounting a strong campaign to unseat Bobby Scott, and in the year of ousting the incumbents this may be the best opportunity to do just that. I personally am working with Marty s campaign to host a Fundraising/Meet and Greet at my home, sometime in July. I welcome any individual members who would like to help with that event. I will update everyone as soon as I have a definite date and time and cost. All are welcome to attend and bring their friends. I enjoy entertaining and especially for a good cause! A special thank you to Pat Coile who single handedly placed flags at the Hampton Veterans Cemetery. My intention to meet her there fell short due to illness and I truly missed the opportunity to take part in the moving tribute to our fallen veterans. I wish more members will seriously think about setting aside next year s date to join as a group and participate. And I hope all said a silent prayer for those who lost their lives at Normandy on D- Day, June 6 th, Many brave men have died for this wonderful country. I hope to see you all at our next meeting. 2 VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF REPUBLICAN WOMEN RESOLUTION SUPPORT OF THE 2016 REPUBLICAN PRESIDETIAL NOMINEE AND ALL REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1953, the Virginia Federation of Republican Women and its members have always joined together in unity following a vigorous primary campaign season; and WHEREAS, 2016 is a pivotal year, and the newly elected President of the United States will shape the direction our nation for generations to come; and WHEREAS, Electing a Democrat to the White House ensures the continuation of President Obama s policies, which have been ineffective at best and disastrous at worst; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Virginia Federation Republican Women, in convention on April 22-24, 2016 in McLean, Virginia, pledges to actively support and work to elect the 2016 Republican nominee for President of the United States and all other Republican candidates. Virginia Federation of Republican Women District Representatives There are 11 districts in Virginia and each district has a VFRW representative. This picture is of all the newly appointed District Representatives. Locally are 1st District Lynda Nestor, 2nd District Sheila Noll and 3rd District Lou Call.

4 Legislative Update 2016 Calendar of Events Jan Jordan Legislative Chairman O n June 1, 2016 the Virginia Supreme Court announced a special session to hear lawsuit, Howell v. McAuliffe on July 19, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. This case challenges the Constitutionality of Governor McAuliffe's unprecedented executive order that granted a blanket restoration of political rights (right to vote and sit on juries) to 206,000 convicted felons, including 40,000 violent felons. Attorney General Herring is defending the Governor's action. This announcement is the first step to overturn McAuliffe's order. Rob Bell will keep us apprised of developments as they occur. Jennifer Lee was elected District Chairman. The election results for the three State Central representatives were Carole detriche, Steve Trent and William Coburn. The third district qualified for three delegates and three alternate delegates for the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Those elected as Delegates were Lori Carlson, Raymond Suttle and William Thomas, Jr. The three Alternates elected were James Manley and J. Matthew Shannon. Newport News registered 83 delegates for the district convention, but only 26 attended. Hampton registered 39 delegates and only 13 attended.
