1 Marion Local Board of Education Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on April 11, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Conference Room. Meeting was called to order by President Elaine Pierron with the pledge of allegiance recited by all present. Randy Bruns, Dave Moorman, Elaine Pierron, Tim Pohlman and Brenda Schwieterman answered roll call by Treasurer, Heather Cramer : Randy Bruns motioned that the minutes of the Regular Meeting held on March 14, 2016 be approved as read. Brenda Schwieterman seconded the motion. A roll call vote resulted as follows: Bruns yea, Schwieterman yea, Moorman yea, Pohlman yea and Pierron yea. Motion passed. Marion Local Technology Coordinator, Michelle Mescher, submitted the following report: Professional Development The last technology in-service for the school year is Wednesday, April 13. Staff members received a total of 294 hours of training this year. More in-services will be available this summer. Technology Issues/Concerns/Miscellaneous Erate form 471 has been filed. All staff are now using Gmail for their service. Technology Purchases Projector bulbs Tablet screen Technology Highlight 6th grade math teacher Mr. Marcus Overman is using a free website to review math skills his students have worked on since the beginning of the year. This website is a curriculum-aligned math game for Grades 1 thru 8. The website allows the teacher to select the skill they want the students to work on, create assignments, and track each students progress. The game is a fantasy land where students get to watch their very own wizard grow stronger, learn new spells and acquire new equipment while facing more powerful opponents, all by answering math questions! The more questions they get correct the harder the questions become. The game is self-paced, allowing each student to work on the content that is right for them. The teacher can login and see everything the students worked on in real time. The teacher can see how many questions were answered throughout the day, and also the number of 1

2 questions the students are answering on their own at home. There are several different reports teachers can view to quickly see which concepts and questions students are struggling with or have mastered. You can even see the questions that were missed. Mr. Overman s students have really enjoyed this website, and it s a great tool to prepare the students for the state test at the end of April. Marion Local High School Principal, Tim Goodwin, submitted the following report: Franklin B Walter: Congratulations to Derek Pierron for being named as this year s nominee from Marion Local. Derek was presented his award at a banquet on March 30 th. Tri-Star Award: Congratulations to Junior Troy Bruggeman for winning the IT/ET challenge held recently at Rhodes State. The end of the third 9-weeks was March 19 th. We had 44/75 (59%) of our 7 th graders on the honor roll and 46/59 (78%) of our 8 th graders make honor roll status. Thanks to all of these students for their hard work. 2. Thank you to Connie Brunswick and Mandy Koenig for their efforts in directing our 5 th and 6 th grade play in March. The play was fantastic and the directors and students should 2

3 be very proud of their accomplishments. 84 students participated and performed four performances for over 1100 people. 3. Congratulations to Kim Bruns and several of her art students on being selected to have their art displayed at the St. Marys Art Show. 4. Thank you to Lisa Brunswick, Amanda Schott, Carlee Kremer, and Jocelyn Tangeman who are finishing up a mural in the front entrance of the elementary. The students designed and painted the entire project depicting scenes of the community and school. Upcoming: April 26: Spring Arts Festival (grades K-8), 6-8pm April 26, 27, 28, and May 3: Various grade levels will be participating in AIR testing Mrs. Heather Cramer, Marion Local Treasurer, submitted the following report: The financial report for March 2016 was approved by the board. The report showed that $377, was spent on 2 regular payrolls and 1 supplemental payroll. $331, was issued in warrant checks and $168, in memo checks. Cash receipts for the month totaled $1,746, and interest income was $3,

Riggle, CPA as our GASB 34 Cash Basis Financial Statements consultant for one year as the cost of $1,450. Rea & Associates has compiled our OCBOA Statements in the past but they have had a lot of turnover and the cost continues to climb. We paid $5,400 in I think this will require more work on my end but is a considerable savings to the district. Carol also prepares the OCBOA Statements for Fort Recovery and Parkway. Other Informational Items Wellness Committee Request The Mercer-Auglaize Benefit Trust is requesting that each school district create a plan to encourage employees to be engaged in their wellness. As a result, our Wellness Committee put together a plan that will require any employee to participate in 3 or more healthy activities throughout the year for a $50 payment. The 3 proposed activities would include the following: 1. Complete 1 preventative screening visit with their doctor 2. Complete 2 of the following: a. Health Risk Assessment Screening b. Attend a health-related presentation c. Receive a flu shot d. Participate and complete a Wellness Committee Challenge e. Participate in a physical challenge or health related presentation from an outside source We are requesting that the board consider setting aside $50/employee that participates and completes this challenge. The challenge would run from June 1, 2016 May 31, The goal is to get more employees engaged in living a healthier lifestyle and visiting their doctor to determine risks in order to decrease insurance claims. If you agree to set aside these funds we will at it to the board meeting agenda in May. Five Year Forecast I will present the updated five year forecast at the May 9 th board meeting along with necessary changes to appropriations and estimated resources. 4

Marion Local Superintendent, Mr. Mike Pohlman, submitted the following report: TEACHERS National teacher day is May 3 rd. BUS Our new bus will arrive very soon and we will place bus 8 as a spare and the new bus will go to our regular route. ATHLETICS I would like to thank Dan Koenig and his efforts in cancelling and rescheduling many spring events due to the cold and rainy weather. I would also like to recognize the work the Athletic Boosters are doing on the football bleacher project : Randy Bruns motioned to approve the items on the consent agenda for the regular meeting as presented. Tim Pohlman seconded the motion. A roll call vote resulted as follows: Moorman yea, Pohlman yea, Bruns yea and Schwieterman yea. Pierron abstained. Motion passed : Tim Pohlman, upon the Superintendent s recommendation, motioned that the Board of Education enter into Executive Session to discuss personnel. Dave Moorman seconded the motion. A roll call vote resulted as follows: Pohlman yea, Moorman yea, Schwieterman yea, Bruns yea and Pierron yea. Motion passed.
