President s Corner November 2017 When an elephant talks, everyone listens! Hello Sierra Nevada Republican Women and Associates. I love this time of year with cool nights and warm sunny days. Well, we had four ladies who attended the NvFRW Biennial Convention in Las Vegas on October 13 to 15. It certainly was an interesting and productive week end. As Delegates, we voted on the new board for NvFRW. The new slate of officers is: President, Diane Baranowski, 1 st Vice President, Lynn Armanino, 2 nd Vice President, Carolyn Smith, Secretary, Barb Hawn, Treasurer, Karen Von Schimmelmann, Northern Director, Cher Daniels, Southern Director, Michele Evans, and Nominating Chair, Darlene Ruedy. I hope you all will be supportive of our new NvFRW Officers. We also voted on two bylaw amendments for NvFRW. As part of the convention, SNRW was awarded with the GOLD Achievement Award. Also, Sally Wiley was presented with the CARING FOR AMERICA certificate of recognition for Both of these rewards will be displayed at our November meeting. I will also ask each of the delegates to say a few words about their thoughts of the convention. Our November speaker will be Janet Freixas, current president of Douglas County Republican Women. I hope you will be able to attend. Please make sure to get your reservation in early so you are eligible for the early bird lunch. November will also be voting for SNRW Executive Board for You may nominate yourself or someone can nominate you from the floor at the meeting. Also, we will be presenting the Entrepreneur of the Year. This will be a very informative and interesting meeting. We are also asking each of you to please attend the Christmas/Installation dinner on December 13. This is where you will be able to support the 2018 board for Sierra Nevada Republican Women. I look forward to seeing you at the November luncheon. Barb

President, Barbara McRoberts called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon. Marie Schnock led our Invocation. Our flag pledge was lead by Douglas County Commissioner, Dave Nelson SNRW Luncheon Agenda October 11, 2017 Guests included: Douglas County Commissioner, Dave Nelson, Douglas County Assessor, Doug Sonneman, and DCRCC Treasurer, Marie Lou Gervie. Lynn Muzzy announced that Douglas County has been selected as the kick-off county for the repeal of the Commerce tax campaign and has forms for signatures. Our Parliamentarian was Kathryn Zogorski. Mary Porter, First Vice President - Programs, introduced Douglas High School teacher Karen Heine. She is the coach of the Speech and Debate team and has taught at Douglas High for 26 years. Karen introduced each student on the Douglas High School Debate Team. The group does so much more than just debates and typical speeches. They perform special events and philosophical debates, comedic and dramatic plays (single and dual), etc. Jamie Harrison and Tobin Schultz debated THAD for South Korea and did an excellent job of explaining the current situation and the pros and cons of utilizing THAD for South Korea in defense of North Korea. They also explained the USA and China s impact to both those countries. Leah Gifford and Courtney Brothers debated Education reform. They have researched and come up with three key ideas for education reform. One is later start times for high school students ages Studies show that they need 8 or more hours of sleep. Lack of sleep causes depression, a higher range of emotional outbreaks and inability to function at higher cognitive levels. Second, the curriculum needs to change. Common Core assumes that all students are equal and, therefore, is not working. Biology, family, resources and circumstance affect students ability to study and perform in school. Since school teachers are paid based in how well students pass testing, some teachers are teaching to the test; there is no critical thinking being taught to the students. The last idea is related to the problem with Federalization of Education and that we should return education to the individual states. Old Business: August minutes approved as read in the Rumbler newsletter. Treasurer: Jacie Peters (had to leave early to return to work) Bonnie Robinson read the account balance. The Sustainability Drawing was $65 and won by visitor, Derek Uehara; he gifted the amount to the DHS Debate team.. The Early bird drawing free lunch winner was Mary Porter. The Holidays are coming up quickly, so please go online and order your reservation for our Christmas Dinner on December 13 th. Reservations must be made by December 8 th. Membership: Bonnie Robinson Members: 70 Associates:33 Bonnie is accepting membership dues now for She ll take cash, checks or you can pay online.. Caring for America Chair: Sally Wiley Sally completed 36 Halloween boxes for the troops; postage was $ The Christmas mailing will be 44 boxes on 12/01/17. She covers Afghanistan, South Korea, Guam and Japan. She currently doesn t need any more food items but is still accepting postage donations. Year-to-date: 182 boxes; total postage was $3, Page 2

Following is the Report that our President, Barbara McRoberts, submitted to the State Federation of Republican Women at their Biennial Convention, October 14th in Las Vegas. NvFRW Biennial Convention October 13 15, 2017 SNRW has had a very busy year. We have provided an interesting array of programs for our members and guests at our monthly luncheon meetings. We featured speakers regarding local issues: Barry Penzel who is chair of Douglas County Commissioner s spoke to us about ordinances (laws) in the county. He also spoke about what important bills to follow. Sarah Sanchez, Managing Director of Carson Valley Community Food Closet spoke to us about food insecurity in Douglas County. The food closet has only two paid staff and 50+ volunteers. Women s Health: Eileen Rice, spoke about how women are living longer and how that is affecting our health. Legislative issues: Jim DeGraffenreid spoke about how to make your voice be heard. We also had Barbara Cegavske speak to us about the Presidential Voter Fraud Commission. She had Director of Elections, Wayne Thorley speak too. Judicial issues: Court of Appeals Judge Michael Gibbons spoke to us about the Appeals Court and its inception in Club activities: SNRW s Constitution Committee replicated the first Constitutional Convention of 1787 which they presented at an elementary school. The 5 th grade students were all presented a pocket copy of the Constitution. The Constitution Committee also sponsored an essay contest at Douglas High School. Amy Kohler was presented with a check and a plaque by Senator Settelmeyer and Assemblyman Wheeler. NvFRW activities: We were honored to have Dianne Baranowski and Caroline Smith attend a meeting and speak to us about the offices in the NvFRW. They suggested we all think about possibly running for one of the offices. Our Caring for America Chair, Sally Wiley who is a Gold Star Mom sends packages to troops. Members help with donations of items as well as money for postage. She also has a Veterans Coffee corner at our local VA office and keeps it stocked for those veterans who utilize the clinic. We provided Monetary assistance to Young Republicans at UNR and to the Reno High School We the People debate team. We have invited the Douglas High School Speech and Debate team to argue the pros and cons of salient issues at our October lunch meeting. SNRW is a PAC and we raise money to be contributed to worthy Republican candidates running for office. We contributed $14,000 to state and local candidates in We have an annual St. Patrick s dinner each year to raise money for this fund. At the 2017 St. Patrick s dinner we had many state and local dignitaries join us. These dignitaries serve the corned beef, cabbage, vegetables and salad as well as dessert. We are fortunate to have them here to support us. It is a wonderful evening. We commemorate 9/11 annually since that tragic day in This was our 17 th year and our speaker was Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt. We honored all first responders this year, which were law enforcement, fire and military. It is always a very moving event. We publish a SNRW Newsletter, The Rumbler, with Nancy Jarvis as our newsletter editor. We also have a website, sierranevadarepublicanwomen.com which is updated by our webmaster Rita Hill. They are both informational resources for our club member s and spotlight other Republican events. SNRW is a very active club with many longtime members. We are also always reaching out for new members. Respectfully submitted, Barbara McRoberts, President SNRW Delegates to the NvFRW Biennial Convention Barb McRoberts, Suzan Hey, Sally Wiley, Mary Porter Page 5

RECOMMENDED READING The Constitution Committee When asked if she had a reading recommendation, Sally Wiley responded, almost immediately, that she would recommend Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World: Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life, Waterbrook, Sally provided this recommendation recently while a delegate to the NvFRW state meeting. As you probably already know, she is busy with a number of service projects. In the parable contained in the bible about Mary and Martha, Martha was busy, in the kitchen. Mary was listening to Jesus speak. Martha asked Jesus if he would send Mary to help her in the kitchen. Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen the better part. Sally describes herself as a Martha, adding that most of the friends also fit Martha s description. The author, Joanna Weaver, explains that the life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Her book supplies details that assist women in putting aside struggles with their responsibilities (Martha), and thus providing time to deepen devotion to their spiritual side (Mary). The author s message is that we should not let the work we do, including our service to others, distract from the reason for our service. Thank you, Sally, for this recommendation as well as for all of your service. The Constitution Committee looks forward to receiving recommendations to pass along to all of our members. Repeal the Commerce Tax Remember the Gross Margins Tax on businesses that 88% of Douglas County voters turned down? Subsequently our state legislators overturned the voters and created the Commerce Tax. Jan Muzzy will be speaking about the petition initiated by Nevada Controller, Ron Knecht, to Repeal the Commerce Tax at our November lunch meeting. She will bring the petition to the meeting so that members can sign it. Members also can obtain a petition from Jan to obtain signatures. The Douglas County Repeal the Commerce Tax Committee will be hosting a town hall meeting at Carson Valley Inn on Monday, 11/13, at 6 pm. Ron Knecht will be the featured speaker. Everyone is invited. The Committee also is reaching out to Adam Laxalt to be there, or to send a surrogate to this meeting. Page 9

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans; that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in DATES TO REMEMBER October 31 --Halloween November 5 Daylight Saving Time Ends November 7 Election Day November 11 Veterans Day November 8 SNRW Luncheon/Meeting-Entrepreneur Award November 13 Town Hall Meeting at CVI re: Repeal of the Commerce Tax (6 pm) November 23 Thanksgiving Day December 13 Christmas/Installation Dinner at CVI -Official Fly the Flag Page 10
