1 SPRING 2017 Letter from Argentum Silver PAC Chair It is the beginning of a new fundraising season and we are off to a great start. We have raised slightly over $100,000 on our way to our goal of $400,000 in this year s PAC campaign. At this time last year we had raised barely half of this amount. To continue on our strong momentum I would like to make an appeal to those on the Argentum Board of Directors and Executive Advisory Board to get involved. This can be done through running campaigns at each of your companies, engaging with business partners that partner with our industry, and spreading the word about how impactful it is to our communities and residents to impact regulatory change. Argentum is unique in its advocacy efforts at both the federal and state levels, where strong state partners and chapters are on the frontline in creating the regulatory environment in which we operate. The Argentum Silver PAC makes significant contributions to PACs in key and influential states, identified by Argentum as 15 states that together contain 80% of Assisted Living communities in the nation. With state and federal action united the voice of Assisted Living and its political impact grows. To celebrate at the end of this year s PAC campaign season, myself and Argentum, together with CALA, TALA, and Florida Argentum, will host a Fiesta en Mexico trip featuring a dinner at my house in Punta Mita. Minimum personal contribution of $3,000 to the Silver PAC is required to attend. This is the first combined PAC event and will be a great way to salute our PAC success in style. Now is the time to spread the word. The campaign season typically ends with the conclusion of the Cobb Cup Competition on September 30th and the Trustee Circle Dinner celebration held at the end of the year. However contributions are accepted year-round and are made on an individual, not corporate basis. Contributions are not tax deductible. Contributions can easily be made with a check by mail to Neil Cohen, PAC Manager at Argentum, or online at argentum.org/advocacy/silver-pac/donate/. Thank you in advance for your PAC support. I look forward to working with you all on this year s campaign. Best Regards, Patricia Will Argentum Silver PAC Chair Current Cobb Cup Standings (As of June 23, 2017) 1. 2 Silver PAC Fundraising Campaign Kicks Off The Silver PAC fundraising campaign kicked off at the annual Argentum Conference and Expo in Nashville this May. Silver PAC has an ambitious goal of raising $400,000 which will be used to continue building relationships on Capitol Hill, support legislators that champion the senior living industry and to support the PACs of Argentum State Partners. Although Silver PAC accepts contributions year round, the Cobb Cup competition will conclude on September 30th. Second Quarter Legislator Disbursements The Argentum Public Policy team has been active attending PAC events for key legislators in Washington, D.C. These PAC events are an excellent opportunity to get quality facetime with leaders in Congress. During the second quarter of 2017, Silver PAC has supported Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA), Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV), Rep. Joe Kenney (D-MA), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME). Argentum Trustee Circle Fiesta in Mexico The annual Trustee and Silver Circle appreciation event will be held in Punta Mita, Mexico at the home of Silver PAC Chair Patricia Will from December 8-10! Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, breakfast with a guest speaker, the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking sunsets, first class rounds of golf, dinner by the water and more. This event is not to be missed. All donors contributing $3,000 or more to Silver PAC in calendar year 2017 are eligible to attend with a guest. For more information please contact ncohen@argentum.org. Above: Paul Williams, Argentum and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX). Above: Argentum Public Policy team and Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA). 2 SPRING 2017
3 Argentum Co-Hosts PAC Events with ASHA On May 23, Argentum co-hosted their first ever joint PAC event with ASHA, supporting Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL). Sen. Nelson is a long-time member and former Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee and represents one of Argentum s States of Influence. Argentum has had a long-standing relationship with Sen. Nelson and his office over the years and has worked with him on a variety of issues impacting the senior living industry. Attendees for the event included Argentum President & CEO James Balda, Sunrise Senior Living CEO Chris Winkle and ASHA President David Schless. On June 5, Argentum and ASHA hosted their second PAC event for Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV). Sen. Cortez Masto is a freshman senator who filled Senator Harry Reid s seat following his retirement. Sen. Cortez Masto serves on the Senate Aging Committee. Prior to serving in the Senate she was Nevada s Attorney General where she was known as a strong advocate for preventing elder abuse. Annual Golf Classic Sets Fundraising Record The annual Argentum Advocacy Fund Golf Classic set a record raising over $160,000! Golfers enjoyed a great round of golf at the Hermitage Golf Course in Nashville. Congratulations to our winning foursome Josh Davis, Tom Masiello, Frank Russo, and Tim Wojcik. Argentum would also like to thank Brad Klitsch for making the event such a success as well as the more than 30 sponsoring companies: Advance Catastrophe Technologies Inc. 4 Interested in Running a Company Campaign? If your company is interested in running a PAC campaign for Silver PAC and even competing for the Cobb Cup, be sure to utilize the Silver PAC toolkit at There you will find documents to guide you through the process and answer many questions you may have about Silver PAC. Argentum Supports Legislation to Simplify Political Action Committee Contributions Under current Federal Election Committee requirements, corporate member trade association political action committees (PACs) must obtain written approval from member corporations before talking in depth about their PAC and/or soliciting their executive and/or administrative staff. Additionally, corporations belonging to multiple trade associations can only solicit contributions to one trade association PAC per calendar year. H.R. 2101, the Prior Approval Reform Act, introduced by Representative Mark Amodei (R-NV), repeals the prior approval requirement in section 316(b)(4)(D) of the Federal Election Campaign Act and ensures trade association PACS do not receive different treatment from other PACs. Argentum is working with other trade associations to remove these burdensome and disproportionate requirements and will be working to garner support for the Prior Approval Reform Act. Support for State Partner PACs Argentum is committed to utilizing Silver PAC as a tool to support the PAC of its state partners to enhance the industry s capacity to advocate at both the state and federal level. So far this year, Silver PAC has supported the PACs of TALA, CALA, NCALA, WALA and Argentum NY.
