1 Course Name: Conflict Analysis and Transformation Course Code: PCS 7110 Course Units: 4 Course Description The course aims at enhancing and sharpening the skills of the participants and their understanding of the tools, techniques and principles of conflict analysis and transformation. Basic concepts in Peace and Conflicts dynamics are introduced. The different theories explaining the origins, causes and impact of conflict will be studied (analysed). Types and levels of conflict will be discussed. Conflict mapping will be discussed through mechanisms of early warning systems. Intervention measures like post conflict reconstruction, reintegration and rehabilitation will be underscored especially in the context of post-conflict situations. Case studies, plenary discussions, field trips, videos and lectures will be used. Course Objectives 1. To equip the students with necessary tools and skills for conflict analysis/ peace building and conflict resolution 2. To familiarize students with concepts and theories related to conflict resolution and conflict transformation 3. To challenge students to appreciate the complex nature of resolution and transformation of [violent] conflicts/ and jointly critically analyze the peace building and conflict resolution environment 4. Learning Outcome: By the end of the course, the participants should be able to amicably negotiate/mediate a violent conflict to a sustainable peaceful settlement. Students are also expected to be familiar with key concepts and literature associated with development of conflict resolution as an academic discipline. Mode of Delivery: This will be through a scheme of lectures, seminars, workshops, practical assignments and guest speaker series.
