1 The Constitution of the Mathematics Student Organization of Drexel University October 11th, 2018 Article I Identification The organization shall be known as the Mathematics Student Organization of Drexel University, hereby referred to as the MSO. This document, the Constitution of the MSO, shall serve as its highest form of governance by providing rules and procedures for its members. Article II Mission Statement The Math Student Organization is committed to fostering a community of undergraduate students with a common interest in mathematics so that they can learn about, appreciate, and have fun with all aspects of math. 1

2 The MSO plans to meet these goals by sponsoring events that include guest speakers, interesting math problems, fun challenges, mathematical games, and off-campus trips to sites of interest. The MSO will provide further enrichment by fostering interaction between undergraduate students and the Department of Mathematics. Article III Affiliations This organization is affiliated with Drexel University as a recognized student organization and, as such, agrees to abide by the rules, policies, and procedures of Drexel University. Article IV Membership The MSO is open to all full-time undergraduate students of Drexel University with an interest in or desire to learn mathematics. Membership in this organization shall not discriminate against any individuals regardless of race, national origin, color, religion, sex, age, veteran status, sexual orientation, and/or ability. All members must attend at least one event per academic year in order to be considered active. When a member of the Organization graduates or transfers from the University, they will lose membership and be given alumni status. Article V Hazing Statement Membership should be a valuable and beneficial experience for all students. Leadership of this organization shall provide its new and current members with an experience that is positive, informative and consistent with federal, state, and local laws, and the policies and procedures of Drexel University. Activities which detract from the goal of fostering personal and intellectual development have no place in this organization. Hazing will not be tolerated by 2

3 or of any member. It is the responsibility of the organization, its leadership and members to report hazing of any kind by members to the proper authority. Article VI Officers The elected officers are required to fulfill all duties listed below to the MSO. The responsibilities of any officer can be delegated to other officers or members at their discretion and under their oversight. Officers have the right to resign from office at any time should they decide that they cannot fulfill their duties and responsibilities to the MSO. All other officers must be aware of the resignation. Upon the resignation of an officer, an election shall take place to elect a new officer. Elections will be held at the end of every spring quarter. Any member who has attended at least one meeting is eligible to vote in elections. Elections will be determined by a majority vote. Current officers are only eligible to vote in the event of a tie, in which case the vote of the current officer will be used as a tiebreaker. There is no limit to the number of times an individual can be elected to any office. Section VI.I President The President shall be responsible for: maintaining and updating the Constitution, informing active members about upcoming events, presiding over all meetings and events, and directing the other officers in their duties. The President must be a full-time undergraduate student of the University, Section VI.II Vice-President The Vice-President shall be responsible for: assisting the President in their duties, supervising committees, maintaining the list of current and active members, and directing the other officers in their duties. 3

4 The Vice-President must be a full-time undergraduate student of the University, Section VI.III Treasurer The Treasurer shall be responsible for: recording all financial transactions regarding the MSO, managing the budget, compiling financial information for use by officers, members, and the University, and ordering all supplies, food, and resources that the organization may require. The Treasurer must be a full-time undergraduate student of the University, Section VI.IV Event Planner The Event Planner shall be responsible for: planning all meetings and events under the direction of the Executive Board, submitting event requests to the University, reserving the required space for an event, and ensuring that all events are properly registered with the University. The Event Planner must be a full-time undergraduate student of the University, Article VII Executive Board The Executive Board is made up of all elected officers, whose duties and responsibilities are listed above. The Executive Board must meet at least once for every academic term to ensure that the organization is fulfilling its stated purpose and goals. 4

5 Article VIII Advisors An advisor to the MSO shall be responsible for: assisting the officers of the Executive Board in fulfilling their duties and managing the relationship between the MSO, the Department of Mathematics, and the University. An advisor must be a full-time member of the faculty or administration of the University. They may be nominated by any member and shall be confirmed by a majority vote among the members of the MSO. An advisor must accept their nomination and be willing to uphold their duties. The MSO must have at least, but not limited to, one advisor at all times. Article IX Committees Committees operate under the authority of the President. They may be formed and dissolved at any time by any officer of the MSO. Each committee must have a committee chair who is an active member of the MSO. It is the duty of the chair to report back to the President as the President sees fit. The chair must be appointed by the officer forming the committee. A standing committee may be formed for any committee that will exist permanently or for any committee representing a professional organization. A standing committee s purpose will be documented by an amendment to this Constitution. If a standing committee represents a professional organization the standing committee will abide by the rules and regulations of the professional organization it represents as long as it is acting on behalf of the professional organization. Otherwise it will abide by the rules and regulations of the MSO. Article X Meetings A meeting is defined as an organized assembly of members with at least one officer from the Executive Board. The purpose of meetings is to discuss the structure of the MSO, inform members about the status of the organization, 5

6 plan future events and meetings, and hold elections. Meetings of the MSO shall be held at least three times per academic term, and the time and location of each shall be determined by the officers of the Executive Board. All meetings must be publicly announced to all members at least seventy-two hours in advance. Attendance shall be recorded at every meeting. Article XI Finances and Fund-raisers Fund-raisers for the MSO can be held at any time upon the decision of the members of the MSO. Any member can suggest holding a fund-raiser and the decision shall be made by a majority vote of the members of the MSO. Article XII Amendments Amendments to this Constitution may be suggested by any member, officer, or advisor of the MSO. Amendments are approved by a majority vote of all active members who choose to vote, and they will go into effect at the moment of approval unless otherwise specified. Article XIII Ratification Every academic year, at the end of the spring quarter, members will meet to discuss this Constitution. Members eligible to vote on ratification of this Constitution must have attended at least three meetings during the current academic year. The ratification of this Constitution is determined by a majority vote. 6

7 Article XIV Dissolution The MSO may be dissolved if it has less than ten active members for more than one consecutive year, if there is no President or Treasurer for more than one academic term, or by a unanimous vote among all members. 7
