13 July 2017 Summary Notes 1/2017 INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF SURVEYORS PRESIDENTS MEETING SUMMARY NOTES OF MEETING of the meeting held in room 103A, Messukeskus Conference Centre, Helsinki, Finland 2 June 2017 from 8:30 to10:00 In attendance: Participant list is included at the end of this memo. Totally 57 Presidents/Heads of delegations attended this Presidents Meeting. 1. OPENING President Chryssy Potsiou opened the meeting and welcomed all Presidents, Heads of Delegations and participants to the traditional Presidents meeting and third meeting under her presidency. This meeting is arranged for the presidents of member associations to share their views on any issues of their interest in a more informal atmosphere than the formal meetings of the General Assembly. This year, there was also organised a session on mutual recognition for member associations after the first general assembly, and a lunch meeting gave the possibility to discuss the recommendations of the Task Force on Commission Structure. President Potsiou informed the participants that next year at the congress in Istanbul there will be election of: FIG President, 2 Vice Presidents and 10 Commission chairs. All member associations were asked to consider to submit nominations of relevant and qualified candidates. The call will be made in August. The President thanked all member associations for their active contributions to the work of the Task Force on Commission Structure. The Task Force has submitted recommendations that include a review of the FIG Governance, and the President encouraged all members to take active part in this development process. Recorded that altogether 57 people were present at the meeting. 2. DISCUSSION The discussion focused on remarks and proposals from member associations related to the issues addressed by the President and other issues that the member associations felt relevant. Italy: Thanks to Local Organisers for a wonderful Working Week everything was perfect. Both organsation and scientific. Especially for com 3 there were a lot of papers. ISS is a good idea. Thanks to Helsinki + FIG and Foundation especially to support YS most important topic for us. Next annual meeting for commission 3 is in Lisbon.

France: French order of land surv: thanks - good tech sessions. Some are not present today. French sessions very successful. Ask if it is possible also next year. Asked for translation for plenary sessions and other sessions next year. Germany: Thanks to FIG and LOC for excellent conference, attending for the first time as President of DVW good feedback from German delegation. GA Monday proposal amendment to statutes. Proposed it because we consider it beneficial for FIG but moreover give the opportunity to RS to stand next year. Without amendment this would not be possible. Austria: smooth & well organized Working Week. Discussions on the structure of FIG is important an ongoing process. For me it is long to wait 4 years. We must react to changes we are not stable. The concern by the two speakers at GA ido not understand. Slovenia ass of surveyors: first time for president to attend. Thanks for the opportunity. Have got new ideas that will be incorporated at home. France French ass of surv: thanks to organisers. We have been involved for many years in com 4,5,6 with lot of participation. Also involved in commission2. French speaking sessions were successful. We want to continue this participation. Congo: Distance to Helsinki is large but once here we must thank the Finnish organisers very much. We are 7 from Congo. Good sessions high level. Hope to be in Istanbul. Support the French on the French sessions not all surveyors understand English. The two French sessions were very good. Ghana: Licensed surveyors you know Ghana trying to stage a comeback on a global level. Respect that this is international. Legacy let us keep the international nature. It is long time since we had an event in Africa. It would be nice to see in the leadership of FIG a representative from Africa. Budget accommodation, wifi, and Ghana is secure. Major concern is getting the opportunity of young people to attend. Visa issues. But beyond the control of FIG. Denied visa it hurts because we all want to do some for FIG. Greece (and EGOS): We would like to see closer cooperation between regional bodies. Nigeria: We need to be more confident what we can give back to countries. Uganda: hope to work together in the future. Happy to be member. Fiji : Thanks to FIG when can FIG have such a big event as WW in Fiji? Australia: Thanks to Local Organisers and FIG. SSSI and the profession is going through a change. Working on maintaining our relevance. We are looking at our members. Most likely through young professionals. They want to see an organization that gives value for money. Advise to FIG on evaluation on governance: Cooperate with specialists: 1. Don t be afraid of change, you need to be flexible and ready. Need to take chances. In FIG I would like to see more activity joint activity between commissions and between sister organisations. And sheer knowledge.

UK/RICS : excellent event. Good sessions, good feed back. Interesting. Internal challenges in FIG but healthy process. We want to achieve our goals. FIG needs to build momentum of task forces. Overall strategy, strengthen profile. GGIM is a drive and we need to link to this. Poland: The situation in Poland: Well educated. Invite all to One of the safest countries in the world. Would like more sessions on 3D cadastre. Many participants had to use the floor. Thanks to FIG and Finland for a very good organization. Czeck republic: Thank to the organisers for a good event. Slovakia: Highest qualification in the country. 2 suggestions on WW: This years forum of member associations had a topic chosen by hosting country which was too technical. We should deal with professional problems in this Forum. 2. Come back to the system of memos of this meeting. Lots of useful information, and it is not to keep in mind what was said. Written memo is very useful. Vietnam: Organising Working Week 2019 in Hanoi. Thanks FIG and Finnish local organisers very much to give us a chance to come and learn a lot. Nice chance for us to have preparation meeting here, and promote the Working Week We have good Young Surveyors network in Vietnam. Contact with FIG YS. Try to do something for YS e.g. workshop. Choose good papers. Denmark: thank you very much for the Working Week - excellent done. Was looking forward to the TF commission they have done a good job. With these recommendations they have opened a new door to ensure that FIG is still fit for purpose. Sweden: Thank FIG especially for the YS meeting we brought YS to here for the first time. They almost got addicted. Have to get back and see what I can do Portugal: Thank to all for a very good Working Week. Portugal has difficulties with new members but maintains number of members. Trying to improve activities. Last year com 7 meeting and CLGE meeting in Portugal. Glad to do this. Important to support YS they do a big effort. Try to include YS in FIG. Portugal support Scientific Journal TF. Careful everything is changing, but difference between company and institution. Right way is to adapt. FIG has to adapt. In a not disruptive way. The Working Week also shows that FIG is very active. Main reason we are here we talk about so many technical issues. FIG has important role. Lot of sessions we cannot see everything. Suggestion: TF on future profession (commission 1 issue) to find guidelines for the future because the situation and work is changing. We wish the best to the Turkish organisers of Congress Turkey: Next conference in Istanbul. Hope to see you all in Turkey. YS very important for the future. New Zealand: We organized the Working Week last year, so congratulations to this years organizer for a good job. Many good technical sessions and good social functions. Support the view of the review structure. FIG Structure has not been reviewed since 2001 healthy to look into it. Membership growth is important for NZ. Change or die do not think that FIG will die but change is needed. YS -we must do what we can to support the YS. FIG is a useful forum. Suggest that Local Organisers of FIG Conferences meet and exchange experience in order to make the future event better. United Arab Emirates: New members we are glad to be part of FIG, and nice experience.

Norway: Good and interesting conference with important issues not only on surveying but on the whole world. Focus are for us is since 2010 refining and recruiting members. Cooperation with companies and mapping organisations. This work has had good impact we have now bigger number of students. You people want to enter the scene of the geomatics world. Good luck to Turkish organisers for FIG congress Switzerland: Wonderful conference. We face the same challenges as Australia. Capacity building is issue we have low number of students, loosing membership but stabilizing because of what we have don during the last 2-3 years. YS network we now have Swiss YS want to make it more stable. In relation to FIG we do not yet have any positions unfortunately. We should keep going on with the work on the structure of FIG. Good recommentdations from the Task Force on Commission Structure. We should be continuing working on this based on the recommendations. Finland, MAKLI: So many countries are here which is so nice. We have experienced that it is important to start the visa process early enough this helps to get visa. We did not have any influence on the weather during this week in Helsinki We are living in a rapidly changing world also in surveying field. We have to adapt or die. So that we can survive as surveyors. YS important. Disappointed that few Finnish YS participated. Students here have just got their summer work. Many considerations and things we need to support. Thanks that all of you who came. Russia: Thanks for the Working Week. We hope to see some commission events in Russia. Ghana (GHIS): We are like FIG we have all kinds of surveyors in the institution. Thanks to Helsinki. We are going back to Ghana and say that people of Finland are nice. FIG at institutional level FIG has so many members, and it is important to ask the members. We can attend commission level, country level. We need to think of the involvement of the individuals. We can be member as association and experience loyalty and competence. Ghana will support commission continuity. We love you so much we want you to come and see our special people in Healthy competition in the bidding. Nepal: We are happy to attend and the FIG event in Nepal last year was useful for us. Romania: The association has been member of FIG since For us this WW was one of the milestones. FIG is not only a professional organisation. It is at the same time a way to connect people and ideas. FIG must remain this bridge between countries and continents. The role of professionals should should be tohave the mission to encourage surveyors. Last year FIG events were organized in Romania. Thanks to FIG President and all others for their support. Inviting to another symposium September Lebanon: Gratitude to organisers. In Sofia I expressed my wishes that FIG must be more involved in national orders for moral support to get financial improvement. You did it FIG President. Hope that policy of FIG is a commitment between people. This is the idea why FIG was created. Spain: was one of the founding countries Spain is back after having been less active in FIG for some time. Hope that we can expand in Latin America. Japan: Japan is too small to make comment on change of structures. Now our member situation is getting slightly better. Want to continue to contribute to FIG.

Tanzania: Hosting commonwealth association meeting in Dar el Salaam encourage commissions to come to Tanzania. Malaysia: thanks for this Working Week PEJUTA is only representative from Malaysia. Busy with the cooperation between the Asian countries. Belgium t: Excellent Working Week especially the social event. The world is changing rapidly. Reflect. FIG is a huge family / group of friends. We must face the change. Technical Sessions were very good. Encourages FIG to have a better connection with sister organisations. We have to keep - continuity, leadership and vision when FIG has to change. Estonia: (also VP CLGE). Thank Finnish team. High level. But normal Finnish Also exhibition was special. A good start with YS - full of energy. Thank John Hohol to protect the YS not only financial, but his speech. They feel welcome. Thanks to the leadership of FIG huge work. Excellent possibility to have friends in the area of your activity. Good network. CLGE: Thanks to the organizers. The Forum of Regional Bodies was an interesting event and an occasion to highlight best practices in different places in the world. Co-chaired by NSPS, US. Techcal sessions were interesting we are surveyors but important also to exchange professional problems and not only technical. Canada: Very fruitful event and a busy week. Many varied subjects both technical and organizational. We must not fall asleep and keep a critical view on the profession. We need to think out of the box and have new views. Impressed with the French sessions. New people communicating. French speaking people from many countries not only the French speaking countries. Want more sessions in French. Cotes d Ivorie: Thank as a newcomer to FIG. We are here to learn from you. In Ivory Coast we are building house of land surveyors. We offer an office for FIG. So FIG President is invited too. USA: Attended also in 1990 and have great memories but this is even better. Weather has been refreshing. Thank Italy and Estonia for their comments. Week has flown by. Botswana: We invite FIG President to come to Botswana. The Africa Network is important happy to cooperate with them and hope to host in the future some event on Africa Network. President Chryssy Potsiou thanked all who participated in the Working Week and in this Presidents meeting. Thanks to all for the discussions and input. Thanks for the interest to FIG and FIG structure. The President stressed that she will ensure that council is open to get ideas and proposals how we should go forward. It is important to provide nominees for the elections. We encourage more communication with all of you. Also through the Regional Bodies meeting. We hope for future Working Weeks that we can arrange some sessions that will accommodate other languages besides English. We need to coordinate with associations and regional bodies that there is a demand for it. Like French sessions self organized. The President finalised the meeting by hoping that all members have established good connections to each other and also with FIG.

The session ended with a group photo.
