1 SPECIAL REPORT F2008 African International Student Census However, a full account of their extent and makeup has been unknown up until now. or those who have traveled to many countries throughout the world, it is increasingly common to find among the expat population eager and hardworking students from all parts of the African continent. Be it Nehru University in Delhi, Tsinghua University in Beijing, Oxford, the Sorbonne or countless others, these students--numbering in the hundreds of thousands--give lie to the beliefs of lack of motivation or aptitude among Africans. Pulling on the resources of governments, the UN, and other educational statistics, Black Expat magazine is proud to present the 2008 African International Student Census. France is by far the most popular, with over 100,000 students in The former colonial powers as well as North America obviously predominate but there are also over 5,000 students in Russia and China continuing a decades old tradition of studying in these countries. 4 Top Map: Students from Arabic speaking countries as a percent of all African students; Bottom: Total Students from Anglophone countries as a percent of Sub-Saharan African students Students from Arabic speaking countries in Africa are the majority of African students in most countries of Western Europe. This is mostly due to proximity and the historical legacy of French colonialism in North Africa. Anglophone students, besides the obvious such as the US, England, and Australia, are heavily concentrated in East Europe and Asia. This is in part due to countries with large populations and overseas students such as Nigeria and Kenya are Anglophone. Volume 1, Issue 1, Spring 2008 Black Expat Magazine 4

Students from Francophone countries are obviously concentrated in France, Belgium, and Switzerland but also are a majority of Sub-Saharan students in Germany and Italy as well as the Baltic States.
