1 CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL JUSTICE Climate Policy as a Building Block for a Fair Globalisation and a Sustainable Poverty Reduction a South-North Dialogue May, 2008 Conference Venue: Evangelische Akademie Tutzing (Lake of Starnberg, Germany) Organisation: Evangelische Akademie Tutzing (D) InWEnt Capacity Building International, Feldafing (D) Munich Re Foundation, Munich (D)
2 CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL JUSTICE Climate Policy as a Building Block for a Fair Globalisation and a Sustainable Poverty Reduction a South-North Dialogue Who may pollute the atmosphere to what degree with greenhouse gases? What about other driving forces of climate change behind the destruction of the environment such as soil degradation and deforestation? These issues have been intensely and controversially debated at climate policy conferences ever since Rio A fair climate policy is the cornerstone of a fair globalisation and a sustainable poverty reduction. At the Tutzing conference we will not just talk about each other, but we will enter into a dialogue with representatives from the South. On the one hand, the potential for development and strategies to adapt to the impacts of climate change in the countries worst affected by its adverse impacts will be debated. Speakers from Mozambique, Guatemala, Brazil, South Africa and China, as well as participants from countries like Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger are the voices from the South. They are asking for Equal Rights for All! Be Fair and Just! Rights to Develop! On the other hand, consequences for the industrialised countries, which are largely responsible for human-induced climate change in the modern era, have to be put on the table. We have to change, but how? Carbon justice or, in more general terms, climate justice, may serve as the criterion to guide the debate regarding the next steps for climate policy in Germany and Europe. This criterion has to be substantiated to stimulate action and raise the climate-awareness of the general public and specifically of the decision-makers in the fields of business and politics. Everyone interested in climate protection and in peaceful and fair globalisation are invited to join the Tutzing South-North Dialogue, i.e. people from all walks of life: business people, politicians and scientists as well as churches and media. Dr. Martin Held, Protestant Academy Tutzing Thomas Loster, Chairman of the Munich Re Foundation, Munich Dr. F. Kayode Salau, InWEnt Capacity Building International, Feldafing Conference languages: German and English with simultaneous translation in the plenary; two workshops in English (Interpreters: Sandra Kress, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Lilo Mayer-Behrens, Munich).
