3 O BJECTIVES To give young scientists from all regions of the world the opportunity to discuss present and future issues concerning science and technology, in particular the situation and role of young scientists with regard to the profound changes in the scientific environment, major scientific and technological achievements, structural changes in many countries, and new perspectives for worldwide scientific co-operation. To reinforce recognition of the need to involve young scientists in the science and technology policy-making process, introducing the active role of young scientists as agents of change in science policy. To make future-oriented recommendations to decision-makers, scientific institutions etc. To discuss the contribution of science in fostering the dialogue among civilizations. To hold the 1 st General Assembly of the World Academy of Young Scientists (WAYS). P ARTICIPATION The event will be attended by about 120 young scientists (i.e. under 40 years of age). The forum aims to have an equal number of female and male participants and have an even worldwide geographical distribution. O FFICIAL LANGUAGE The official languages of the conference are English and French. At the opening and closing sessions, simultaneous translation in Arabic will also be available. P LENARY S ESSIONS The situation of young scientists in the World: constraints, opportunities and challenges Three Plenary Sessions are included in the conference programme. Each Plenary Session will give the opportunity to Keynote Speakers, who are leading scientists, policy makers, representatives of major international institutions and NGOs, to cast a broad overview of the most topical issues in S&T, with special focus on young scientists. Conclusions and recommendations for future activities will be presented in the Closing Session. Major topics: New knowledge-based professions - new training requirements Talent recruitment and science education worldwide Employment and funding opportunities Career development of young scientists Mobility and the exchange of knowledge: present situation and future perspectives 3

4 P ARALLEL W ORKSHOPS A1 Ways between different generations/groups of scientists A2 Developing the underdeveloped: the role of science B1 Science and society: the young scientists contribution B2 Ways of communicating and sharing knowledge Two blocks of parallel Workshops will explore a specific matter of debate concerning the situation and role of young scientists. Selected speakers, also including young researchers, will address major issues, present good practice examples, and prepare the ground for discussion. In order to increase debate efficiency, the Chairpersons will be asked to thoroughly challenge the speakers and try to unravel the points of disagreements among speakers and participants, in order to promote extensive and challenging conclusions and recommendations that will be presented in the Closing Session. R OUND T ABLE Science contributing to the dialogue among civilizations: the young scientists perspective The major aim of the Round Table is to bring together young researchers from all over the world with eminent scientists, policy makers, representatives of major international institutions and NGOs, and outline how the 21st century can include the active promotion of racial, cultural, and gender equality and diversity among scientists, and put an emphasis on the importance of the dialogue among civilizations through which new perspectives for worldwide scientific co-operation will open. WAYS G ENERAL A SSEMBLY The General Assembly will be attended by young scientists of approximately 90 countries from all over the world. The participants will discuss and decide on the structure, functioning and future activities of WAYS. 7 G ENERAL I NFORMATION Conference registration Registration and information desk opening hours are as follows: Saturday, 10 December :00-18:00 Sunday, 11 December :30-20:00 Monday, 12 December :30-17:30 Travel Transportation between Airport and Hotel in Marrakech will be provided free of charge. Insurance Participants are advised to take adequate personal travel insurance. A BOUT M OROCCO Language Although the official language of Morocco is Arabic, French is very widely spoken and understood, particularly in the major cities. Time Morocco keeps Greenwich Mean Time all year round. Entry requirements All visitors to Morocco require a passport valid for at least six months after the date of entry. Health There are no compulsory vaccinations for visitors to Morocco although doctors may recommend protection. Money The Moroccan unit of currency is the dirham which is divided into 100 centimes. Notes are in denominations of 20, 50, 100 and 200. Moroccan currency can only be bought within the country and cannot be exported. Electricity Power points are the continental two-pin type, and are 220V AC in new buildings and 110V in older locations or smaller villages. Getting around The state railway company ONCF offers youth rail tickets for students and half-price fares on the ferry services between Algeciras (in southern Spain) and Tangier. All the major international car hire companies are represented in Morocco. Climate The climate in Morocco is very dry, though there is some rainfall between November and March. The temperature varies considerably according to the season and locale. The average yearly temperature in Marrakech is 22 ºC.
