2 Course/Module description: This module is optional for 2nd and 3rd year students. It explores key issues in state-society relations in the Middle East using the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as a case study. The first part of this module discusses several concepts and issues in regional perspective. Among these concepts are state building, demography and majority-minority relations, political economy, regime stability and authoritarianism, civil society, civil-military relations and political Islam. The second part of this module explores the evolution of state-society relations in Jordan using the aforementioned issues. In this regard, the effects of the Neo-liberal policies of King Abdullah II on the social contract and the governance of the regime will discussed thoroughly. Course/Module aims: To provide a broad overview of key concepts in state-society relations in the Middle East in the 20th century; to provide a critical overview of regime, state and society relations in modern Jordan with a particular emphasis upon the reign of King Abdullah II; to allow students to analyze and evaluate both public discourse and current research on issues pertaining to the policies of the Hashemite regime, its stability, its relations with the Transjordanian population and Jordanian-Palestinian relations. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: Identify and describe key features of state-society relations in the modern Middle East; Describe the key differences between the interests of the regime, the state and various communities in modern Jordan; Define the meaning of the historic social contract in Jordan and describe the latest developments in it; Define the meaning of rentier state and rentier mentality and describe their manifestations in regime, state and society in Jordan; Discuss the complexities of regime-transjordanian relations under King Abdullah II; Analyze and assess the soundness of public and academic discussions about the stability of the Hashemite regime; Apply module information in order to interpret correctly new developments in regime policies, regime-transjordanian relations and Jordanian-Palestinian relations in Jordan.
