Terms reference The twenty-first Session East Central and South-East Europe Division (ECSEED) United Nations Group Experts on (UNGEGN) convened by ECSEED s Chairman, was held in Ljubljana,, on 26 November II. Attendance The Session was attended by 21 participants from 8 ECSEE Division countries. The complete list participants in Session was given in Annex I this document, and issued in a separate document, available on ECSEED web site: III. Officer Session Chairperson: Ph.D. Milan Orožen Adamič (). IV. Opening Session The ECSEE Division Chairman opened Session and welcomed delegates. He presented a brief history n Standardization and its participation in UNGEGN. He pointed out that meeting was planned earlier, but due to financial crisis in region it was postponed. The Chairman n introduced Ph.D. Mimi Urbanc, assistant director Research Centre n Academy Sciences (ZRC and representative Anton Melik Geographical Institute ZRC SAZU, which organized this Session. Mr. Urbanc is also a member n Commission for Standardization. Ms. Urbanc warmly welcomed all participants, also on behalf n Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec, who due to urgent matters was unable to attend opening Session. V. The Session reporting and documents There are 7 national reports submitted to Session: national report Czech, national report Hungary, national report Poland, national report Serbia, national report Slovakia, national report and national report Ukraine. National report Croatia has not been submitted, but it was presented at Session. 3
4 Submitted national reports are published on ECSEED web site: After national reporting Chairman pointed that n presidency ECSEED will end in Therefore, he invited all Member States to take over presidency after Hereinafter discussion was followed. The highlights were minority names, dialect forms and naming streets after people associated with totalitarian regimes. The representative Serbia also asked some questions about collection and standardization geographical names. After discussion re were presented following special presentations: Difficult historical problems transliteration and transcription (by Bogusław Zagórski); Does Google serve as a model using place names? (by Gábor Gersák); Mycrotoponyms as important part n cultural heritage (by Jožica Škic); The Gazetteer n Exonyms (by Drago Kladnik); The list Polish geographical names world (by Maciej Zych); Toponomastic publications Adriatic Onomastic Research Centre University Zadar (by Dunja Brozović-Rončević). The special presentations are published on ECSEED web site: The list all documents (national reports and special presentations) Twenty-first Session East Central and South-East Europe Division UNGEGN is given in Annex II this document. VI. Conclusion and recommendation The Session recognized importance geographical names and positive achievements and progress made in work geographical names standardization by participating countries. It was concluded that process standardization geographical names must absolutely continue. The Session concluded that after next UN Conference on standardization on in 2017, anor country will be ECSEE Division chairing country. All representatives countries were requested to notify ir willingness to take on presidency ECSEE Division within one month. 4
