8 List of Contributors Andrea Mubi Brighenti is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Trento, Italy. He holds a PhD in Sociology of Law from the University of Milan, I. His latest work has appeared in Current Sociology, Thesis Eleven, Law & Critique, Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia, Polis, Sociologia del Diritto, Quaderni di Sociologia and the Canadian Journal of Law and Society. Leonidas K. Cheliotis is Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice at the School of Law, Queen Mary, University of London. He is the editor of The Arts of Imprisonment: Control, Resistance and Empowerment (forthcoming in 2010) and the co-editor (with Sappho Xenakis) of Crime and Punishment in Contemporary Greece: International Comparative Perspectives (two volumes, forthcoming in 2010). He is currently working on a monograph provisionally entitled Law and Order in the Margins of Europe: A Political Economy of Othering. Lilie Chouliaraki is Professor of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Previously, she was Professor of Media and Discourse Studies at the Copenhagen Business School, where she was also Director of the CBS Media Hub and coordinator of MediaDemos (International Network on the Ethics of Mediation). She is the author of Discourse in Late Modernity (with Norman Fairclough) and The Spectatorship of Suffering, the editor of The Soft Power of War and the co-editor (with Mette Morsing) of Media, Organisations, Identity. Her next book project is entitled The Humanitarian Imaginary (forthcoming in 2010). Spiros Gangas is Professor I of Sociology at Deree College in Athens, Greece. He was previously a teaching assistant at the University of Edinburgh (where he completed his PhD in Sociology with a dissertation on Simmel s epistemology) and Lecturer at the University of Wales, College of Cardiff. He has also taught at Panteion University in Athens. He has published in English on Simmel, Durkheim and Hegel, and in Greek on Vaihinger, Simmel and Durkheim. viii
9 List of Contributors ix Richard Kearney holds the Charles B. Seelig Chair of Philosophy at Boston College. He is the author of over 20 books on European philosophy and literature (including two novels and a volume of poetry) and has edited or co-edited 15 more. His most recent work in philosophy comprises a trilogy entitled Philosophy at the Limit. The three volumes are On Stories, The God who May Be and Strangers, Gods and Monsters. Alison Liebling is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Prisons Research Centre at the Cambridge Institute of Criminology. She has published several books, including Suicides in Prisons, Prisons and their Moral Performance: A Study of Values, Quality, and Prison Life (with Helen Arnold) and The Effects of Imprisonment (with Shadd Maruna). She is co-editor of the journal Punishment & Society. John O Neill is Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology at York University, Toronto, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He teaches in sociology, political economy, critical literary, media and psychoanalytic studies. He is the author of Sociology as a Skin Trade, The Communicative Body, Essaying Montaigne, Plato s Cave: Television and its Discontents, Five Bodies and Civic Capitalism: The State of Childhood. He is co-editor of both The Journal of Classical Sociology and Philosophy of the Social Sciences. He is currently working on Freud s five major case histories under the concept of the domestic economy of the soul. Nancy Scheper-Hughes is The Chancellor s Professor of Anthropology at the University of California-Berkeley, where she also directs the doctoral programme in critical studies in medicine, science and the body, and heads Organs Watch, a medical human rights research and documentation project. She is best known for her ethnographies Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics: Mental Illness in Rural Ireland and Death without Weeping: The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil. She has also published several edited volumes, including, most recently, Commodifying Bodies (with Loïc Wacquant) and Violence in War and Peace (with Philippe Bourgois). Her next book will be AWorldCutinTwo:TheGlobalTraffic in Humans for Organs. Justice Tankebe is a British Academy postdoctoral researcher and a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, University of Cambridge. After being awarded the BA degree in Sociology from the University of Ghana (Legon), he completed an MPhil in Criminological Research and the PhD at the Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge.
10 x List of Contributors Ezra Tessler is a Jacob K. Javits Fellow and PhD candidate in the Department of History at Columbia University in New York. His research interests include the history of crime and punishment, international social movements and human rights. Currently he is completing a project on the history of international penal reform. Sappho Xenakis is a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow based at the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy in Athens, Greece. Her project, funded by the European Commission, is a two-year study of security policy transfer from the EU, the US and Britain to Greece concerning issues of organized crime and terrorism. In addition, she is currently authoring a monograph entitled The Politics of Organised Crime: Theory and Practice (forthcoming in 2010) and is the co-editor (with Leonidas K. Cheliotis) of Crime and Punishment in Contemporary Greece: International Comparative Perspectives (two volumes, forthcoming in 2010).
