However, greater challenge will stem from analysing what went wrong and how can it be repaired. For this purpose, we will have speakers who are experienced in assessing rule of law and giving advice on how to get rule of law back on track when the political climate is not in favour of a strong judiciary. The Center presents the Peace Prize laureates and their work, and tells the story of Alfred Nobel and the Peace Prize. It also acts as an arena for debate about important social issues. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, guided tours, various events and family activities, we wish to foster reflection and engagement on topics related to war, peace and conflict resolution. With economic uncertainty, the rise of robots and cuts in publicly funded legal services threatening growth in the legal market at home, should bar associations be taking matters into their own hands by developing new opportunities for their members abroad? If so, what can be done unilaterally (eg, through trade promotion), and collectively (eg, through mutual recognition), to create new work for their lawyers from foreign sources? How can bars work together to do this and what frameworks exist to allow them to do so without breaching World Trade Organization rules? 4 Thursday continued Trends in legal education and lawyer competence Ask lawyers today how new ones should be trained for practice and many will say, the same way I did it. However, shouldn t the question be What should the lawyer of the future look like?? How can legal training and education systems better serve the need to increase the diversity of the profession, improve access to justice, better meet the needs of clients and, above all, reflect accelerating technological change and its potential impact on legal services? What would be the likely consequences of each for lawyers and legal practice? If the United Kingdom, including its legal profession, will not be allowed to have its cake and eat it, what possibly painful trade-offs are likely to be required by the European Union now that the Brexit trade talks have commenced? What impact will all of this have on London s pre-eminence as a legal centre? Will UK lawyers retain: the right to deliver legal services on a cross-frontier basis into the EU; the right to establish and maintain branch offices in the EU; recognition of their qualifications in the EU; rights of audience in the Court of Justice of the European Union; and legal privilege in EU competition and trade law investigations? On the other hand, what additional barriers might result for EU lawyers wishing to qualify and practice in the UK? Should the IBA seek to lobby on such issues and, if so, to what ends? It houses the city council, the city s administration and various other municipal organisations. The building was constructed between 1931 and 1950, with an interruption during the Second World War. It was designed by architects Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson. The building has been decorated by great Norwegian art from , with motifs from Norwegian history, culture and working life. Due to security restrictions at City Hall, all attendees and their guests must pre-register for the reception. Your IBA badge must be worn to gain access to the reception and Oslo City Hall requires attendees to have an invitation card to access the venue.
