3 Calendar Details February 2015 GAP Report Process The GAP Report themes were approved by the board at the end of In February and March, GHI will continue to refine the topics to be covered under the GAP Report and present the board with options for an African country to be highlighted in the report. Consultations will be held with a panel of experts beginning the March and April on a variety of subject areas to be covered in the report. This will include representatives from GHI s member companies, and the GHI consultative partners. The design and drafting of the report will take place from May through July; final revisions will be made in August for a printing deadline in mid- September. Support Needed: GHI will be requesting technical input from each member company and examples of new and innovative technologies along the value chain that help with agricultural productivity. This person will need to join several conference calls between April and July to ensure technical soundness of GAP Report and provide material and possibly photos, etc. for report. March Productivity Conference March 11 th -12 th, Washington, D.C. GHI, the Farm Foundation, and USDA ERS will co-host a conference for productivity experts to distill out hard data on TFP and translate the results into common policymaker language that can be incorporated into GAP Report and other policy products. Communications Support Needed: Help in publicizing the event for media/journalists and other Washington DC attendees interested in agricultural productivity issues. The event will be very technical, but one session will involve a more policy-oriented panel which will include a representative of a GHI member company. Support with disseminating blog on this event via social media. National Agriculture Day Activities March 17 th -18 th, Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. March 17th AgriPulse Panel: Farm to Fork Politics, Unleashing Innovation in Agriculture, 3:30-5:00 PM AgriPulse Reception 5:00-7:00 PM March 18th Mix & Mingle Luncheon, 11:30-1:00 PM Celebration of Agriculture Dinner: 5:00-9:00 PM April Chicago Council Annual Global Food Security Symposium April 16 th, Washington D.C. Once again, GHI is a partner for the Chicago Council s annual symposium. GHI will contribute a blog post and provide social media support for the event. The theme for this year s symposium is Health Food for a Healthy World and will explore the linkages between agriculture and nutrition. In preparation for this meeting, GHI s Harvest2050 blog will include a series of pieces looking at linkages between agriculture and improving nutrition from a private sector perspective. Potential Visit to Gates Foundation GHI and the Farm Foundation are pursuing a joint grant with the Gates Foundation that would provide significant multi-year funding for the GAP Report and related activities. As part of the cultivation activities for 3
4 this grant Margaret Zeigler and Neil Conklin would travel to Seattle to meet with leaders in the agriculture and global advocacy groups to discuss the proposal and potential application. May Private Sector Mechanism for FAO Annual Gathering & Bilateral Meetings May 12 th -14 th, Rome The Private Sector Mechanism organizes two days of meeting with the leadership of FAO as well as dozens of member country governments to discuss private sector concerns and priorities on a range of issues under discussion at FAO and through the Committee for Food Security. Meetings are also held with the leadership of the World Food Program (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Close to 100 companies and private sector entities attend this three-day event. June and July GHI staff, board and steering and technical committees write and review GAP Report. Also each board member and those attending the World Food Prize must register on the World Food Prize website ( to attend the Borlaug Dialogue and you must reserve your own hotel space at the Des Moines Marriott for your teams attending. Please plan to arrive in Des Moines on Tuesday October 13, as we have an 8:00 am board meeting on the morning of October 14, as well as our other GHI activities that day. You may wish to stay at least through Thursday October 15, or Friday October 16, and we will do our best to ensure you are given an invitation to attend the official Borlaug Laureate Ceremony that takes place Thursday night, October 15 at the Iowa State Capitol. October World Food Prize Week October 14th-16 th, Des Moines Downtown Marriott, Des Moines, Iowa & Ruan Center GHI Events, October 14 th GHI Board Meeting, 8:00 AM, Ruan Center, Des Moines Embassy Club Room This is our second in-person board meeting of the year. We anticipate that some new members will be joining us. Private Sector Leaders Dialogue, 9:30-10:30 AM, Ruan Center, Des Moines Embassy Club Room In 2014, GHI hosted executives from the top agriculture and food companies attending the World Food Prize for an off-the-record dialogue with Assistant Secretary of State Charles Rivkin. This is a unique gathering at the World Food Prize, providing private sector leaders the opportunity to engage in high-level discussions with leaders in government and multi-lateral institutions about critical topics such as trade and investment. It also serves as a recruiting event by demonstrating the value of GHI membership. GAP Report Launch Event and Lunch, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Des Moines Room, Marriott Hotel This is the major event of the year for GHI. We will present the findings of the 2015 GAP Report followed by a panel discussion that will include representatives from GHI member companies, consultative partners, and USDA ERS. Communications Support Needed: Social media support from our member companies is critical to amplifying the messages we will be presenting that day. Give the U.S. focus on the 2015 GAP Report, we anticipate an increase in media interest as well. GHI will work with member company communications teams to identify key messages and create press materials, coordinate outreach to reporters, and develop a social media strategy. 4
5 Borlaug Dialogue Panel October 14 th or 15 th GHI is organizing a private sector panel as part of the official program of the Borlaug Dialogue to take place either during the opening session on the afternoon of October 14 th or during the morning session of October 15 th. GHI-OECD Meetings with Ministry of Agriculture of China Late October, Beijing GHI continues to develop its partnership with OECD and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. Opportunities are here for GHI member companies with a base in China to participate on a panel or give a brief plenary address to the attendees, consisting of Ministry of Agriculture officials, experts from other companies and universities, and OECD and FAO participants. December Capitol Hill Launch of 2015 GAP Report December, 2015 or January, 2016 The 2015 GAP Report will contain key messages for U.S. policymakers, particularly going into an election year. This event will target representatives from the Administration and Congress, as well as other leaders in the private sector and D.C. policy and advocacy communities. GHI member companies will have the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion. Communications support from GHI member companies will help amplify the messages through earned and social media. April 2016 Water for Food Conference April 23-27, 2016, University of Nebraska, Lincoln The Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute at the University of Nebraska is a GHI consultative partner.
