2 Conference - the organizers Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI) Centre for Information and Guidance India (CIGI) a synonym for multiple educational and career empowerment services stands out as one of the largest grassroots based NGOs in India, which has crossed the milestone of 16 years of committed efforts towards grassroots social development. Our interventions in the educational and social fields especially among the downtrodden have drastically changed the scenario and have been widely accepted. The projects initiated by CIGI, on behalf of Local Self-Government bodies have made remarkable impact on quality improvement of public educational institutions. Faculty of Research and Analysis of CIGI initiated many research studies on educational and social backwardness of grassroots and several inclusive actions were deployed, which has created many empirical practices. CIGI's mission is to popularize the scientific knowledge and methods of social development and to fine tune human resource at grassroots to initiate progressive movements towards nation building. Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is an Institute of National Importance of Government of India. It functions as vital resource centre coordinating training, research, orientation, extension, outreach, documentation and dissemination activities in the field of youth development. It also offers M.A., Ph.D programmes in Youth Work viz., Youth Empowerment, Career Counselling, Gender Studies, Local Governance and Life Skills Education. The Institute organizes training programmes for key youth functionaries and provides core training material and expertise in youth development. Training manuals and special modules to impart specific techniques are brought out by the Institute. It also undertakes action research and evaluation studies which help in formulating policies and programmes to cater to the current needs and aspirations of the youth. i n t e r n a t i o n a l c o n f e r e n c e o n GRASSROOTS SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT 2013 Feb 4,5,6 Calicut, Kerala, India University of Calicut The University of Calicut, the second university to be set up in Kerala, came into being in 1968 with the objective of developing human resources in the northern districts of Kerala by extending the reach of higher education and by promoting research in all areas of development. The University made the beginning by taking into its fold the four postgraduate departments set up by the University of Kerala at Calicut and 54 constituent colleges spread across seven northern districts. The University has surmounted challenges to emerge as the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala. Its 31 post graduate departments and 304 affiliated colleges have now become a veritable light house beckoning lakhs of young men and women to benefit from higher education.

3 Social development refers to the processes through which people are helped to realize the fullness of the social, political, and economic potentials that already exist within them.it can be described as the progress in improving health and education and raising income of the people along with their power to select leaders, influence public decisions and share knowledge. Education can initiate social changes and hence social development, by bringing about a change in outlook and attitude of the individual. It can bring about a change in the pattern of social relationships and thereby it can cause social development. A basic deficiency of development process has been its failure to generate adequate and regular income generation sources. Availability of employment provides an individual and his/her family with purchasing power, enabling them to acquire means of subsistence as well as consumption of goods to satisfy the basic needs, comfort and leisure. Enhanced income sources can lead to investments in areas like education, health, etc. These investments in turn increases the social participation of people and eventually increases their social esteem. Conference - the rationale Inclusive development implies the welfare of all, is embracing entire community or society. No individual or community will be suppressed, exploited and liquidated in this model of development. If we want to ensure inclusive and equitable growth, we need to mend and integrate the grassroots into the progressive development process that are rapidly transforming the world. The world cannot afford to sustain two distinct zones, one progressive and prosperous, and the other deprived and backward. The conference is to discuss the methods and way ahead for integrating the socially excluded and marginalized grassroots around the globe into the developmental process.
