Nobel Laureate John Hume is the current holder of the Tip O Neill Chair in Peace Studies, funded by The Ireland Funds. The Chair was inaugurated by then- US President Bill Clinton during his visit to Northern Ireland in November Professor Hume will share his experience of politics and peacemaking with others in Ireland and beyond. On accepting the appointment, Professor Hume said: I am honoured and privileged to serve in a position associated with Tip O Neill. He was a man who helped encourage me not only politically but in terms of inward investment and I am delighted to accept this role.

3 About INCORE Established in 1993 INCORE is a joint project of the United Nations University and the University of Ulster. Combining research, education and comparative analysis, INCORE addresses the causes and consequences of conflict in Northern Ireland and internationally and promotes conflict resolution management strategies. It aims to influence policymakers and practitioners involved in peace, conflict and reconciliation issues while enhancing the nature of international conflict research. INCORE Research INCORE Research on conflict and peace issues is interdisciplinary and wide-ranging. This reflects both the interdisciplinary nature of INCORE's staff and associates, as well as INCORE s view that conflict affects and is affected by a range of local and global phenomena that include political, cultural, economical and social dimensions. Current research themes include: Peace Processes Management of Diversity Governance & Transition Researching Divided Societies Education & Conflict The Role of Civil Society INCORE research is carried out by experts in fields such as international politics, sociology, psychology and policy studies who specialise in regional and thematic issues - and is enhanced by our links to institutions active in global peace and conflict research and policy issues.

4 INCORE Courses The University of Ulster offers an array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and modules dealing with conflict issues. The flagship taught programme is the MA in Peace and Conflict Studies - which attracts students from all over the world. INCORE runs an annual Summer School - an intensive week of discussion, reflection, learning and networking for professionals working in peace and conflict, facilitated by leading academics and practitioners. From January - April 2004 INCORE hosted 20 professionals from SAARC countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal) on a British Council-funded conflict resolution study programme. INCORE invites applications from students interested in conflict and peace related research. Current doctoral research includes: citizenship and education; comparative research into the Belfast Agreement and the Taif Agreement in Lebanon. INCORE Services INCORE offers a comprehensive Conflict Data Service (CDS) on global conflict issues. This includes: latest information on conflicts in specific countries. thematic overviews and interdisciplinary guides on how conflict affects and interacts with other issues and phenomena. an online database of peace agreements from around the world. an extensive list of the various academic and training programs in the field as well as details of organisations and institutes concerned with issues relating to conflict. INCORE publishes The Ethnic Conflict Research Digest (ECRD) which reviews the latest global peace and conflcit literature.

5 INCORE Events INCORE has a continuous programme of events seminars, workshops, conferences that bring together leading global conflict experts, practitioners and policy-makers. Recent highlights include: UNESCO Peace or Patriotism conference on the role of journalists in war situations. Northern Ireland Middle East Connection conference on the role of economic development in peace processes. Study tour for Nepalese politicians on the Northern Ireland peace process. Northern Ireland seminar on Restorative Justice. Details of forthcoming events can be found on the INCORE website. INCORE Publications INCORE Publications include Occasional Papers, Conference Reports, and Research Reports. In addition a full list of INCORE staff and associate publications is also available. Publications comprise country-, regionand issue-specific reports; theoretical literature; comparative analyses; collaborative ventures - the outcome of INCORE s wide-ranging and interdisciplinary work in international conflict research. INCORE Policy and Evaluation INCORE s Policy and Evaluation work seeks to bridge the gap between research, practice and policy in conflict and conflict resolution. We foster links between grassroots and government, between research and policy, and seek to prevent these different entities working in mutual isolation.
