2 Concept Note on the Ten Days Research Methodology Course in Social Science About the Course: Research is an integral part of the growth and expansion of social sciences. Its importance is enhanced much more in the modern, globalized society where development has attained additional dimensions. Social Science Research faces the challenge to thoroughly equip itself to meet the ever growing needs of the society that is transforming at a rapid pace. Often, demarcations (into rural, urban and cast, gender etc) are blurred by the advancement in technology and changing socio-economic scenario. Societal problems are assuming wide-ranging complexities. Under these circumstances, it is necessary to approach research from a preliminary and systematic understanding of the methods in social science research is an essential part of social science research and over a period of time, the methods have expanded enormously in their scope and application. Feminist Research Methodology: Women constitute about half of the population and there is a shift in thinking about women s role in development. The new ideas suggested that development was only made possible by the involvement of women in development projects. Secondly, there is a relationship between women, and the work that they perform in their societies as economic agents in both the public and domestic spheres. It also emphasizes the distinctive nature of the roles women play in the maintenance and development of their societies, with the understanding that purely the integration of women into development efforts would serve to eliminate the existing structures of inequality present in societies overrun by patriarchal interests. Objectives of the course will address some of these issues and serve as a forum for students to interact and exchange notes on their ongoing work. It seeks to expose research scholars to a) an understanding of categories like method, methodology and theoretical perspectives b) critical perspectives on assumptions underlying dominant strands of research c) the idea of validity of method in positivist and interpretive frameworks and d) recent developments in the philosophy of social science research.

The art of doing research: selection of a research problem: research design; formulating hypotheses and indicators; methods of sampling and inference 3. Statistics and econometrics with hands-on experiences; 4. Qualitative and quantitative methods; Ethnographic studies; case study; New advances in methods of social science research; 5. Ethical and gender issues in social science research; Action Research; 6. Interpreting research; 7. Consolidation of research findings, research report and dissemination 8. Exposure of statistical packages like SPSS, STATA etc. Inviting Application Applications are invited for 10 days Research Methodology Course in Social Science. From PhD scholars/researchers/young think tanks from various Universities/ colleges and institutions. Only 30 seats are available for the course. About Kannada University Kannada University is a unique institution that was established by the Government of Karnataka in Unlike other universities, Kannada University does not have a regional jurisdiction that

4 caters to the educational needs of a particular region. Conducting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on various aspects of Karnataka and Kannada language is the main objective of the University. The University is situated near Hampi, which was once the capital of Vijayanagar Empire of the yore. Kannada University is dedicated to development of the Kannada language, literature, traditions, culture, and folklore. It has established an academic wing that acts as a nodal agency to facilitate research and coordinate with teaching activities. The academic wing of the University organizes seminars, conferences, workshops, discussions. It also collaborates with other academic institutions, both at national and international level, for quality research and teaching. The academic wing is headed by a senior professor of the University. The University has established four faculties of study to conduct research activities. Every department of the University offers Research Programs. Kannada university located near Hampi, an historical place. The very name HAMPI evokes mythological and historical memories. People lived here since the Stone-age as it is evident in the cave paintings left here by the Stone-age people for posterity. Historically this place has been the abode of many religions - Buddhism, Jainism, Virashaivism, Vaishnavism, Islam and many popular religious cults like Huligemma cult, Galemma cult, Mylaralinga cult, Balabasava cult which exist to this day. This has been an important place for many kingdoms like Hoysalas, Sindhs, Kapilas, not to speak of the Vijayanagara kingdom which originated here and reigned over most part of South India for more than three centuries. Vijayanagara Kingdom has also been the icon of Kannada identity and has inspired the Karnataka unification movement, symbolically representing unified Karnataka. Hampi has also been the abode of many a wellknown Kannada poets like Harihara, Raghavanka, Kumaravyasa and Purandaradasa. Hampi is the treasure house of Indian architecture and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Center. About The, Kannada University was established in With grants from the University Grants Commission of New Delhi, it has been working towards creation of gender-sensitive environment at various levels in academic and public life. It has also conducted several Researches and programs at both the grass root and the academic levels such as gender and legal awareness workshops, lectures on women s issues. It has also focused on mainstreaming gender in a variety of ways.
