2 Invitation Hearty welcome to you all to participate and present research papers through Research Committees of the XII National Sociological Conference on Social Transition : Issues and Challenges. Theme The express theme of the 12th National Sociological Conference is to situate and explore the issues of social transition in contemporary India. The conference intends to fathom the relationship between agents of transition and response of social structure; institutional adaptations and agency of individuals. Exploring the impact of transition on social structure, creative adaptations by institutions and emergence of conflict in different spheres of society in post independent India constitutes the core focus of this conference. Indian context of transition emerges from state s deliberate and avowed purpose of social transformation which is informed by the discourse of development, national movement and constitution. Recognizing individual as unit and not groups; equality before law and equality of opportunities irrespective of ascriptive identities and concept of justice have set the tone of transformation and the corresponding shifts Indian society has been experiencing are diametrically opposed to ascriptive identities of traditional Indian social structure. Social transition broadly include the significant process of transformation in the structure of socio-economic institutions, culture, idea, production relations, social behaviors, labour force, social relations, etc. Owing to the impact of science and technology, communication and modernity humans are moving towards individuality, which is further accelerated by the process of globalization. Growing individuality, unrestrained consumerism, resilience of traditional identities, depletion of environmental resources, disparities in income-wealth and disparities in realizing the fruits of growth and resultant social movements have characterized the context of transition in India. This conference intends to explore, deliberate and discuss the trends and patterns of transition emerging on account of nation-state s avowed ideals of transformation. XII National Sociological Conference has constituted 13 research committees with different themes and sub-themes. It is our privilege to invite you to participate in this conference and also to contribute a paper on following Research Committees (RC).
