Although the economy improved during FDR s first term ( ), the US was not out of the depression Unemployment & homelessness remained high and people wanted solutions I In 1936 the American people reelected FDR demonstrating support for his New Deal policies A. Democrats also won reelection in both houses of Congress B. The New Deal would be allowed to continue

5 I. FDR launched the Second New Deal and the Second Hundred Days I FDR 1 st wanted to help farmers revived the AAA to assist poor farmers AAA provided more than $1 billion to help farmers end overproduction and revive American agriculture

8 I. FDR also assisted urban workers during his 2 nd New Deal I IV. Congress created the Works Progress Administration to help industrial workers The WPA worked to create as many industrial jobs as possible as quickly as possible The WPA spent $11 billion to give industrial jobs to 8 million workers V. The WPA also hired artists, writers and photographers to create public art
9 I. The National Youth Administration (NYA) was created to provide education, jobs and recreation activities for young people NYA gave America s youth employment opportunities and provided relief from the Great Depression
10 I. In the 2 nd New Deal Congress passed the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) (Wagner Act) I IV. This law protected workers rights to create unions and collectively bargain for better conditions The NLRA protected workers from unfair business practices and requested minimum wages The NLRA tried to get Americans working and out of the Great Depression.
11 I. In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act A. Set maximum hours at 44 per week B. Minimum wage at 25 cents per hour C. Banned hazardous work for children under 18 The FLSA attempted to provide industrial workers with fair salaries

13 I. The most important achievement of the New Deal era was the creation of the Social Security System The Social Security Act, passed in 1935, had 3 parts: A. Old-Age Pension (retirement funds) B. Unemployment compensation (lose your job à payment) C. Aid to families with dependent children & disabled (welfare) I The SSA attempted to ensure that the American people would be protected from poverty

The New Deal was not s4mula4ng the economy and ending the Great Depression I The New Deal was intended to jumpstart the American economy yet struggled to provide long-term solu4ons to problems

New Deal reformed the stock market (SEC), banking (FDIC), industrial workers (Wagner Act, FLSA), life for the elderly (Social Security) But, the New Deal did not lead to a full recovery of the American economy In million people were s4ll unemployed and the economy grew slowly
