2017: California Children in Immigrant Families: The Health Provider Perspective Partners: California Primary Care Association (CPCA) California Program on Access to Care (CPAC) Cecilia Ayón (Associate Professor at the School of Public Policy, UC Riverside) Methodology: electronic survey (n=151) Focus on access to care, types of services needed, and immigrant family health and wellbeing The children are scared for their parents Health Provider, California

2017: California Provider Survey I am seeing an increase in depressive, anxious, and somatic symptoms, as well as recurrent trauma symptoms from the past. People are extremely scared. Health Provider, California

2017: California Provider Survey In meeting with key staff of elementary, middle, and high schools, there are consistent concerns that immigrant parents are too scared to attend school events, resource fairs, and obtain services due to the fear of immigration taking them away from their family. Our families report concerns and fears about going grocery shopping, walking their kids to school, and seeking mental health/dental/vision services using Medi-Cal, as they think it might lead to an INS raid. Health Provider, California

2017: California Provider Survey Patients and families have concerns about discrimination and fear not only about health care, but also education, employment, etc. Families report increased stress levels regarding immigration and fear around family disruption and separation. Health Provider, California

2017: California Provider Survey One undocumented parent told me that she was nervous about getting mental health care services because of all the questions we ask, referring to the high number of intake forms required for our services. Health Provider, California

2018: Immigrant Families Research Fall 2017: Focus Groups Latino and API families Central Valley, Inland Empire Fall 2017/Spring 2018: Family Survey Reach: 495 households Methods: organizations identified as surveyors Bay Area Central Valley Inland Empire Los Angeles County Orange County Southern Border

2018 Snapshot: Family Focus Groups As a mother, I am worried. It keeps me up at night. Because of the president, Mr. Donald Trump, the kids are learning how to hate. -Latino immigrant parent, Riverside I am scared that someone wants to remove me from my house... I may be at a store with my children and they arrest me, that is something that worries me. -Latino immigrant parent, Fresno I mean right now I feel like I live in Third World country. You know like in a camp sometimes the guard comes and catches people and sends them back. -API immigrant parent, Fresno It s like hanging from a string that can be cut at any time. Young Latino male (16-21), Riverside

2018 Snapshot: Immigrant Family Survey Parents see their immigration status and President Tru mp as the biggest obstacles to meeting their personal goal s. 43% of parents see both as their biggest obstacles 47% of Latinos see their immigration status and 46% see President Trump as their biggest obstacle More than one-third say other obstacles they face include: not having the money to reach their goals (35%) and racism or the fact that some people are biased against people like me (35%)

2018: Key Informant Interviews Methods: 20 key informant interviews Key informants: community members, promotoras, immigrant rights leaders, health advocates, social workers, mental health experts, attorneys, and others Goal: learn about the health needs, barriers to care, and recommended policy and practice changes. Identify best practices in local and statewide responses to immigration enforcement activities in various communities

Moving Forward: Awareness & Support Public education Share accurate, up-to-date information Individual civic engagement Role of storytelling Advocacy tools - talking points and factsheets Secure resources are available to support: Community organizations Legal services in communities Services for undocumented parents

Moving Forward: System Changes Health, Social Services and Child Welfare Educational resources for understanding immigrant families rights related to health care and social services Better tools and interventions to help make referrals to social, mental health, or legal services Connection to community organizations and school personnel Ensure eligibility and enrollment for immigrant families
