1 1 DR MD SELIM REZA Assistant Professor and Coordinator Development Studies Asian University for Women Room no. H614 20/H M. M. Ali Road Chittagong-4203, Bangladesh Phone: Fax: Summary of qualifications I am an Assistant Professor and Coordinator in Development Studies at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, Bangladesh. I teach and research theories and practices of development and migration, mobility and development courses. I completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in July 2018 from Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia. My PhD research was about labour migration and precarious employment, theoretically positioned in the discourse of neoliberalism and Guy Standing s eminent notion of the precariat. At Flinders University, I taught undergraduate topics including LEGL1201 Law in Australian Society at the College of Business, Government and Law, SOCI2025 Sociological Research: Design, Methods and Ethics at the School of Social and Policy Studies and LEGL1102 Contentious Justice Issues at the Flinders Law School. I completed a full year Academic Internship Programme for Doctoral Students 2017 run by the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at Flinders University. I also participated in a special professional development session run by the Australian federal government funded Smart Casual project for sessional law teachers. In addition, I volunteered as a mentor for the Migration Support Programmes at Australian Red Cross in Adelaide and a peer mentor for the Flinders University UniAccess Mentoring Programme. Before commencing PhD at Flinders University, I was a Research and Communications Officer for the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) at the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and worked for the Migrating out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium based in the University of Sussex, UK. In 2013, I was awarded a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship in the UK. After postgraduate studies in International Relations from the University of Dhaka, I started my career as a volunteer and field researcher for Young Researchers Forum (YRF) and subsequently became Research Associate at RMMRU. In these positions, I conducted focus group discussions, household surveys and in-depth interviews, led a team of researchers, supervised research assistants in data analysis, and drafted many research reports, journal articles, conference papers and other presentations. I wrote a policy background paper on migration sector in Bangladesh as a consultant for the World Bank. I have gained comprehensive field research experiences in Bangladesh, Thailand, Maldives, Malaysia, Qatar and Sri Lanka. My professional experiences span applied research, data analysis, project management and research communication in migration, poverty and development, and other sociological research issues. I have attended and presented papers in many workshops, conferences and seminars. In 2016, I published a peer-reviewed paper titled Hyper-individualized recruitment: Rural-urban labour migration and precarious construction work in Bangladesh in the journal of Migration, Mobility, & Displacement published from the University of Victoria, Canada. This publication was awarded the Flinders University Best Research Higher Degree Student Publications Award in February 2017.

In 2013, I was awarded the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK. The UK-based University of Sussex hosted me for three months. The main objective of this fellowship was to get training and abilities to do my job of communicating research findings to key stakeholders at national, regional and international levels better. It has strengthened my technical abilities through learning more about research uptakes and engaging with representatives in the UK from different stakeholder groups with whom I engage in Bangladesh. The fellowship programme aimed to build my professional network of contacts; enhance my competence to design, deliver and sustain communication skills and develop the key skills of research communication in development research within and beyond the organisations. It was successful in transferring skills, broadening my experience and exchanging experience with key audiences: research and communications teams within the University of Sussex and other research organisations, advocacy focused non-governmental organisations; media houses and professionals; UK-based Diaspora and migrant organisations and UK policy makers. On 6 February 2015 the online In Daily published a special feature on me on the basis of the articles with a title Law grad harnesses power of print in Bangladesh ( The website of Flinders University also carried out the feature in its news section ( These write-ups were appreciated by the Bangladeshi policy circles and academia saying that these had the ability to help achieve a positive impact to establish social justice in Bangladesh.
