3 JOE S PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE Greetings Everyone! It is hard to believe that there are only two months left before we break for the summer. It is also hard to believe that it is already May. The colder than normal temperatures might delay pond season for those who have smaller ponds in their backyards. I am hoping to keep some tropical fish outdoors this summer. I had success keeping swordtails outside last year, hopefully I will be able to do the same this year. Last month we had another fantastic talk from Larry Johnson. His presentation on Lake Malawi Cichlids was very informative. The pictures in his presentation were outstanding. What an experience it would be to see cichlids in their natural environment. This is definitely one to add to the bucket list. May is a planning month for the executive as we prepare for elections that are held in June. The executive plays a critical role in maintaining the success of the club and ensuring the club continues to grow. Nominations will begin at the May meeting. If you, or anyone you know would like to run for a position next year do not hesitate to submit a nomination at the meeting. Tom Bridges will be in charge of the elections so if anyone has any questions feel free to speak to him at the May meeting. Also, if anyone has a question regarding the duties of certain executive members do not hesitate to speak to the current executive member for more information. I would like to remind everyone that the CAOAC convention is being held on May The convention is a great place to see informative presentations and to make new friends in the fish hobby. I am looking forward to this year s betta show and auction. I know there will be some amazing entries to drool over. If you would like more information regarding the CAOAC convention visit their website or speak with Catharine at our meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone on May 4th, please remember to bring a non-perishable item for Community Care. Joe Krawchuk JAR SHOW RESULTS April May - There were no entries for April - Guppies 3 May 2015

4 From the Editor s Desk Lee Routhier As Joe said, can you believe it s May!!. I m looking forward to the warm weather, sitting outside listening the waterfall from the pond. I was a little concerned about mine over the winter as we added some tiny koi to it late last season. Happy to say that all our fish including the koi survived. I don t know how many fish I have at the moment I lost count at 40. We are a little cooler in Fort Erie still so while some of you may have your pond plants already breaking water, I am still waiting for mine. I definitely will be at the May meeting to here the discussion on ponds. I enjoyed seeing the photos from Larry s presentation at last month s meeting. The trip sounded interesting, not sure if it is something that I would like to do. I m not much of a diver. Then the power went out, made for a pretty interesting auction. It was like bidding on surprise packages. Rumour has it that someone was actually bidding against them self. ***************************************************************************************** How did you begin your tropical fish hobby? Pick up a pen and paper, make some notes, then send them to Lee for publication in The SCAT for the April, May or June issues, asap. If you have any photos, great! Pat Bridges Fish Fact : Fish have been on the earth for more than 450 million years. Anyone been around that long to disprove this? 4 May 2015

Save the date Join us May 30 for our discusssion on Shrimp, Snails and Critter Crumbs with Pamela Thompson Danyluck Critter Crumbs now available in store Cryptoheros nanoluteus By Dave Furness This fish was last known in the hobby as Archocentrus nanoluteus. Even though it is related to the convict, and its popular name is the Yellow convict, it is not a convict. The nanoluteus is a territorial cichlid from Central America. They are found in Boca del Toro, Rio Guaramo, and the Chiriqui Grande District in Panama. In the wild, the male can reach a length of 4.5 inches, while the female can grow to 3.5 inches. They are happiest when the PH is between 7.2 & 8, and the water temperature is between 72 and 81 degrees. These fish are omnivores, and a varied diet of meaty foods, and a vegetable diet would serve them well. I received a few specimens from my friend Tom Hillier. I believe he received them from a friend in Montreal, and that, they are very rare in the hobby. When I got them home, I separated a pair and put them in a 15 gallon tank for for about 2 months. The temperature was 78 degrees, and the PH was 7.6. After that two months in the tank together, they showed no 11 May 2015

12 interest in spawning, so I put them into a 50 gallon tank, with the rest of them. after 8 months together in a species tank, they finally spawned. The water parameters was the same as above. It has been a couple of months, and they are still very small. I have been feeding the fry infusoria, micro worms, and brine shrimp. This is our regular spot in The SCAT. It ll contain brief descriptions of hobby related items that members have For Sale or Want To Buy or Swap and their names, phone numbers and/or addresses.
