Business A. Election of Officers. The following resolutions were offered by Roxanne Henderson and seconded by Nora Haenn: 1. Jim Whiteside shall become the new secretary. 2. Joanie McLean shall become the new treasurer. The resolution was accepted by unanimous consent.

2 Reports B. Treasurer s report. The Abbot presented the Fiscal Year 2014 Profit & Loss Report for December 1, 2013 through June 1, 2014 [q.v. Attachment I]. After some discussion, it was accepted by unanimous consent. Board-only deliberation The Abbot withdrew from the meeting. Other business C. The Abbot s request to move into the dormitory for the summer. After reviewing unexpected developments in the Young s travel plans and the shifting configurations of the Abbot s request, the following resolution was adopted by unanimous consent: 3. Because the Young s boat purchase fell through, the pending decision to let the Stewarts move in has to be reconsidered. The board discussed a multitude of factors related to successful operation of a zen center in such tight quarters. That included the current living arrangements for Matt and Kim Young (along with their two daughters, Samana and Taylor) who not only use the kitchen for meals, but also as their all-purpose, living-and-study room. It reviewed the Stewart s proposal to move into the dormitory, build a pen for their dogs, and cook outdoors plus store their furniture and other belongings there. Because of the loss of usable space, it explored ways to accommodate periodic guests and outside groups as well as regular retreat participants (which number between 10 and 20 people per retreat). Given the historically troubled relationship between the Youngs and the Stewarts, the board concluded that the chances of exacerbating their simmering conflict were high. It also expressed concern about the practicality of cooking outdoors and building a pen for the dogs given the Center s longstanding policy against pets. The overall effect would in all likelihood be an increase in the level of tension and stress for everyone involved in the center. Because such an atmosphere would be detrimental to the mission of the North Carolina Zen Center and because of the severe reduction in usable space, the following motions were accepted by unanimous consent. 4. It is not in the best interest of the center for the Stewarts to live at the center at this time. 2 North Carolina Zen Center

3 5. The Stewarts may use two rooms in the dormitory to store their personal belongings until the fall retreat. At that time, we will revisit the decision. After Matt and Kim Young had been informed of the board s decision, the Abbot and his wife were called in separately. Following a brief discussion, the Abbot resigned. Taken by surprise, the board immediately asked him to reconsider his decision. He declined and departed. After discussing his reaction, the board decided not to announce the resignation for a few days in hope that the Abbot would reconsider and withdraw his resignation.
