2 Pg II President Patt Parker s November Perspectives Every vote does matter! Continue volunteering at the phone bank through November 8th people will be calling all through the day on Tuesday. Thanks to many of you, Dan has a waiting list for Poll Observers. Be sure to count these activities to on your campaign volunteer hours. Get out your lists and your Christmas card list. Make calls; send s to your friends reminding them to vote. No sitting out this election! Our upcoming meeting is the YCRW Annual Business meeting. We will be reviewing things we have done this past year as well as voting on bylaws. Active members may vote. Associate members may not. For all members, you will be learning more about the various committees, which you participate in - find out what we need for 2017 and look to serve in an area in which you would like to volunteer. We have two immediate needs. One for our website - it's been designed, but it needs updating on a monthly basis or more often during legislative session. The other need is for a person to edit/ publish the YCRW monthly Newsletter. Please see any of the YCRW leadership team - or better yet - find Carolyn Gardner who does this for us currently to find out what this would entail. For your planning purposes, please note that beginning January 2017 our YCRW will be meeting at the same location at the same date. However, we are changing the day we meet. The Board of Directors voted to change it to the 4th Monday of the month to deconflict the YCRW meeting day with the Prescott Valley Town Council Meeting and other meetings regularly held on Thursdays. Looking forward to seeing you at our November 10th meeting!

8 Page VIII Prescott Native, Joel Schocet, shares his perspective on the unique rights and blessings afforded to all Americans in the U.S. Constitution It s that time of year when the media tell you all the things for which you should be thankful. We should, of course, be thankful for our families and our friends. But we, as Americans, should be thankful for much more. The liberals and so-called progressives who control most media outlets, with which they attempt to impose their love of big government and rejection of Constitutional values, treat many of our gifts with disdain. Following are two of the gifts for which Americans should be thankful and which liberals and progressives seek to devalue. Be thankful for our rights and protect them. Opinion Block As set forth in the Declaration of Independence, all men are endowed with certain inalienable rights. (If the Declaration were written today, it would say all men and women. ) The essence of this statement is that no one gives you these rights you have them without anyone s action. Read the Bill of Rights and you will notice that it does grant rights, but rather prohibits the government from taking them away. Most important with regard to securing our right are the first two amendments. The First Amendment provides: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Note that the Amendment places restrictions of the government with regard to our inalienable rights, it does not grant them. Today, liberals see the opposite. For example, they say the government can prohibit the practice of your religion by requiring that individuals and organizations must bend to the government s edicts, such as providing abortion pills, even though those edicts require the abandonment of closely held religious tenets. They say the right to practice one s religion must be balanced with a woman s right to contraception; but they cannot point to anything in the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, or history holding that the latter right may abrogate the former. They say the government can limit your speech and tell you what you can and cannot say. The attorney general even promised to prosecute individuals who voice anti-islamic rhetoric which edges toward violence, a determination to be made by the government. The Second Amendment, the great bugaboo of liberals, provides: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Again, the Second Amendment does not grant a right, but prohibits the government from infringing upon that right. Liberals, however, wish to reverse the Supreme Court s Heller and McDonald decisions, which confirmed that the Second Amendment actually recognizes the right of the people to keep arms. (The Court has not yet ruled on the right to bear arms.) Liberals fail to recognize that the Second Amendment speaks to the security of a free State, the entity composed of the people. The Founders were concerned about the power that might be wielded by the central government and sought to safeguard the method by which a State could protect its citizens from the abuse of that power. As set forth in the Declaration of Independence: Continued on Next Page
9 Page IX Author, Joel Schocet, continued from previous page That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends [to secure the inalienable rights of the people], it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government. Opinion Block Pg 2 The Second Amendment ensures that the people will have the means to exercise that right. Thus, the Second Amendment protects all the other rights held by the people, including the rights enumerated in the First Amendment. But liberals argue that militia in the Amendment would today refer to the National Guard. The federal government, however, can exercise its authority over the Guard and thereby deprive the State of the Guard s service. Liberals refuse to acknowledge that the militia was and is composed of the people, and that the militia exists in part to defend the State and the people from the federal government. If we permit the federal government to take these and other rights from us, we will cease to be what the United States was created to be: a defender of its citizens rights. We must not ignore that the name of our nation is the United States and that the authority of the federal government is derived from the States and the people. This, too, is set forth in the Bill of Rights. The Tenth Amendment provides: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. Notwithstanding the plain language of this Amendment, the federal government unconstitutionally exerts powers it lacks. If there is a Constitutional Convention, the Tenth Amendment should be amended to add at the end the words and we mean it. The Obama administration has furthered the federal government s usurpation of powers that are denied to it by the Constitution, notably the powers granted Congress in Article I of the Constitution, and a Hillary Clinton administration can be expected to continue this. As there is a reason that the right to keep and bears arms is protected by the second of the Amendments, surpassed only by the rights of religion, free speech, free press and free assembly, there is a reason that the powers of Congress, the representatives of the people, is set forth in the first Article. We must protect our rights, and right now the way to do so is to vote. Remember that Republicans who do not vote elect Democrats and their liberal agenda. Every four years, it is said that the coming election is the most important ever. This time it is true, for we are on the cusp of forfeiting our rights and there might be no way to recover them. VOTE! Be thankful for our military. We must also be thankful for our military, for is it they who secure our rights from outside threats. Veterans Day is upon us and we say thanks to our veterans who have selflessly given their service to our nation in the most honorable way. Let s especially remember the combat veterans who have fought for our freedoms: in World War II, where the Greatest Generation defeated the most abhorrent powers the world has ever known; in the Korean War the forgotten war our first fight against communism; in the Vietnam War, whose veterans put their lives on the line and then returned to the scorn of many; and in the Gulf and Iraq Wars, where America rescued others from dictatorship and provided them with the freedom to rule themselves. No nation has sacrificed more to the freedom and well being of others than the United States. And it is our military that has stood on the front lines protecting democracy and, most of all, us. THANK YOU ALL.
