3 Permanent no-fee public access "One of the core missions of the Government Printing Office (GPO) is to provide, in partnership with Federal depository libraries, for nationwide community facilities for the perpetual, free and ready access to print and electronic publications of the Federal government." -- SOD-PPS "Through preservation activities GPO will provide free permanent public access to Government publications and information dissemination products that are within the scope of the Federal Depository Library Program and the Cataloging & Indexing Program for future generations." -- SOD-PPS

4 The FDLP & tangible government information Since 1813, the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) has preserved the public record of the U.S. government by means of ensuring distributed access to official U.S. publications. Under the authority of Title 44 of the U.S. Code, the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) distributes publications to participating libraries (FDLs), and the libraries agree to make them available to the public at no charge. Today over 1100 FDLs also assist people in their communities in identifying, locating, accessing, and understanding government information.

13 Mission Preservation of Electronic Government Information (PEGI) is a two-year initiative to address national concerns regarding the preservation of electronic government information by cultural memory organizations for long term use by the citizens of the United States. The focus is at-risk government digital information of long term historical significance which is not being adequately harvested from the Web or by other automated means.

17 Outcomes & Products 1 Conduct a multimodal scan of atrisk federal digital content. 3 Conduct an educational awareness and advocacy outreach program. 2 Produce guidance for agencies and other government information producers, taking the form of recommendations for best practices that can improve the preservability and accessibility of electronic information. 4 Develop recommendations for a collaborative agenda for future work to continue improving preservation of electronic government information.
