4 CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL FFA CHAPTER OFFICER DUTIES President: Haily Giles Preside over meetings Appoint committees Coordinate and plan the activities of the chapter Represent the chapter in public and at official functions Responsible for the organization and completion of national report or application for chapter recognition Vice President: Tanner King Coordinate all committee work Work closely with the president and advisors to assess progress toward meeting chapter goals Assume the duties of the president if necessary Responsible for all joint activities and cooperative activities and events Secretary: Jordan Marquez Prepare and post the chapter agenda for each meeting Be responsible for chapter correspondence Keep the program of activities wall chart up to date Prepare and present the minutes for each chapter meeting Keep on hand for each meeting and keep track of current events Treasurer: Mason Buckland Receive, record and deposit FFA funds for each chapter meeting Receive monthly treasurer reports at each meeting Serve as chapter photographer Release news and information to local and regional news media Sentinal: Ty Bransford Supervise chapter activities year-round Welcome guests and visitors to FFA events and activities Inform prospective students and about the FFA Keep the meeting room comfortable
5 Cleveland High School FFA Constitution Article 1 Name and Purpose Section A. Section B. The name of this organization shall be Cleveland FFA Chapter. The purposes for which this chapter was formed are as follows: 1. To teach and develop leadership skills 2. To create more interest for agriculture and FFA throughout the school 3. To provide and encourage the development of organized recreational activities 4. To give back to the community in a positive way Article 2 Organization Section A. The Cleveland FFA chapter is a chartered local unit of the New Mexico FFA Association, which is chartered by the National FFA Organization. Section B. This Chapter accepts in full the provisions in the constitution and bylaws of the New Mexico FFA Association as well as those of the National FFA Organization. Article 3 Membership Section A. Membership in this Chapter is only active but this is subject to change in the future when we establish an Alumni and when we have members who receive their Honorary Chapter FFA degree. Section B. Active Members in good standings may vote on all new business brought before the Chapter. An Active Member shall be considered in good standing when: 1. Officers must attend all meetings. 2. Members will wear official dress at 1 meeting per month, which may include wearing official dress to school. 3. They attend more than half of the chapter meetings. 4. They show an interest in, and take part in the affairs of the chapter. 5. They pay all bills within 30 days or have made prior arrangements with advisors. 6. They are a true representative of the FFA as perceived by the Chapter Executive Committee. 7. They are academically eligible to participate in activities according to the policy as established by The Cleveland High School District Board of Trustees.
6 Section E. Name of applicants for membership shall be filed with the Chapter Secretary Article 4. Emblems Section A. There shall be four degrees of Active Membership in the Chapter. These degrees are: Greenhand, Chapter, State, and American. Section B. All members holding the Greenhand FFA Degree are entitled to wear the bronze emblem pin all members holding the Chapter FFA Degree are entitled to wear the silver pin, all members holding the State FFA Degree are entitled to wear the gold emblem key. Section C. Minimum qualifications for obtaining the four degrees of Active Membership shall be those listed in the Nationals FFA Constitution. Section D. Chapter Officers shall review the qualifications of members and make recommendations to the Chapter concerning degree advancement. Article 5.Officers Section A. The officers of the Chapter shall be as follows: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter and Sentinel. The local Advisor shall be the teacher of agriculture in the school where the Chapter is located. The Officers shall perform the following duties: 1. The President shall preside over and conduct meetings according to accepted parliamentary procedure, keep member on the subject and within the time limits, represent the Chapter and the public and at official functions, coordinate Chapter efforts by keeping in close touch with the other Officers and Advisor, preside over meetings and meet beforehand with advisors to set-up and types agenda. The President is in charge of the Point Award Chart and will keep in updated at all times with the assistance of the advisor. 2. The Vice President shall assist the President when needed, oversee committee work, preside at meetings in the absence of the President, appoint committees and serve on them as an ex-officio member to them, and work closely with the President and Chapter advisors to asses progress toward meetings Chapter goals. 3. The Secretary shall prepare and read the minutes of each chapter meetings, prepare the agenda of each chapter meetings, attend to official correspondence, count and record rising votes when taken, prepare chapter memberships recording, issues membership cards, and call meetings to order in the absence of the presiding officer.
7 4. The Treasurer shall assist chapter advisors with receiving, recording and depositing FFA funds, assist in preparing the chapter budget, keep the financial records of the chapter, and submit in writing a financial report at each meeting and submit all bulletin announcements. 5. The Reporter shall gather and classify Chapter news, prepare articles for publication or broadcast, contact local newspapers, send news to State or National publications, arrange for FFA participation in local radio and/or TV programs, and keep an up-to-date Chapter Scrapbook with the assistance of the Chapter Historian. The Reporter shall prepare a Chapter Newsletter for publication with the assistance of the Advisors. 6. The Sentinel shall set up the meeting room and care for Chapter paraphernalia and equipment, attend the door during meetings and welcome visitors, see that the meeting room is comfortable, take charge of candidates for degree ceremonies, and assist with special activities and refreshments. 7. The Advisor shall assist the Officers in running the Chapter and advise them as the need arises. The Advisor shall also assist the Chapter President in preparing the Point Award Chart and assist the Chapter Reporter in preparing the Chapter Newsletter. Section B. Officers of the Cleveland FFA shall be elected and announced annually at the May meeting. Applications will be made available to members and will be due two weeks prior to the May meeting. The applications will be screened by a committee consisting of senior officers and the chapter advisor(s). Selected applicants will be interviewed by a committee selected by the chapter advisor(s). The ballot will consist of applicants slated for each office. Each slated applicant may slide once to an office below the office for which they are slated. Section C. To be eligible to run for Chapter Office you must: 1. Hold Chapter FFA Degree. Freshmen holding the Greenhand FFA Degree may run for office. 2. Two weeks prior to the election the applicant s application must be turned in to the Advisor(s). If application is not in on time, the applicant will forfeit. 3. Be in good standing with the Chapter as outlined in Article III, Section D of the Cleveland FFA Constitution. 4. Must be academically eligible when his/her serving term begins. Section D. The Chapter Officers, with the exception of the President, whose vacancy shall be filled by the Vice President, shall appoint all Officer Vacancies during the term.
8 Section E. An officer can be removed from the officer team at any time for conducting himself/herself in a manner that in unbecoming of a chapter officer as determined by the fellow officers and advisor(s). (Possible examples include but are not limited to: Not fulfilling duties as required by the Constitution, not portraying the image of a FFA member as established by the Chapter Executive Committee, losing respect of fellow Chapter Officers, Members, Advisor(s), or the community.) The vote to remove an officer must be carried by the majority of the Chapter Executive Committee. Section F. An Officer missing a meeting, leadership conference, or other responsibility must provide an explanation to the chapter advisor(s) one day prior to the event, except in uncontrolled circumstances or extreme emergencies. Section G. Any Officer who is placed on academic probation will be forced to resign, in writing, at the first appropriate FFA Chapter Executive Committee meeting. In this case, the office will be filled as seen fit by the remaining chapter officers and advisors.
9 FFA Degrees There are five degrees of active membership an individual can achieve. There is the American Degree, State Degree, Chapter Degree, Greenhand Degree, and the Discovery Degree. The national organization holds a minimum qualification for each degree presented. American Degree: The American FFA Degree is awarded to FFA members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA and made significant accomplishments in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs). To receive this degree you must meet the following requirements: 1. Have received a Greenhand FFA Degree, Chapter FFA Degree and State FFA Degree. 2. Have been FFA members for at least three years. 3. Have completed at least three years (540 hours) of high school agriculture classes, or 2 years of high school agriculture classes and one year of college agriculture classes (360 hours.) 4. Have graduated from high school one year prior to the National FFA Convention at which their degree will be awarded. 5. Have maintained detailed SAE records, which demonstrate outstanding planning, managerial and financial skills. 6. Have earned and productively invested at least $7,500, or have earned and productively invested at least $1,500 and worked 2,250 hours beyond scheduled school hours through their SAEs. State Degree: The State FFA Degree is given to the top members of a State FFA Association. To receive a State FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements: 1. Received a Chapter FFA Degree. 2. Have been an active FFA member for at least two years (24 months) at the time of receiving the State FFA Degree 3. Have completed at least 2 years (360 hours) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at our above the ninth grade level, which includes an SAE. 4. Have earned and productively invested at least $1,000, or have worked at least 300 hours outside of schedule class time through an SAE. 5. Demonstrated leadership ability by performing 10 parliamentary law procedures, giving a six-minute speech on a topic relating to agriculture or FFA, and serving as an FFA officer, committee chairperson, or committee member.
10 6. Have a satisfactory academic record, certified by the agriculture teacher and the school principal or superintendent. 7. Participated in the planning and implementation of the chapter s Program of Activities. 8. Participated in at least five different FFA activities above the chapter level. 9. Complete at least 25 hours of community service in a minimum of two different activities. All community service hours are cumulative, i.e. the 10 community service hours used to obtain the chapter degree can be used toward the state degree. Chapter Degree: The Chapter FFA Degree is given to an FFA chapter s top members. To receive a Chapter FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements: 1. Received the Greenhand FFA Degree 2. Satisfactorily completed 180 hours (or the equivalent) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at or above the ninth grade level. 3. Have an approved SAE in operation. 4. Enrolled in an agriculture course 5. Participated in the planning and implementation of at least three official FFA chapter activities. 6. Earned and productively invested at least $150, or have worked at least 45 hours outside of scheduled class time, or a combination of the two, through their SAE. 7. Have developed plans for continued growth and improvement of their SAE. 8. Effectively lead a group discussion for 15 minutes. 9. Demonstrated five parliamentary law procedures. 10. Show progress toward achievement in FFA award programs. 11. Have a satisfactory academic record. 12. Submitted a written application for the Chapter FFA Degree 13. Complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service activities Greenhand Degree: Greenhand FFA Degrees are given out at the chapter level. To receive a Greenhand FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements: 1. Enroll in an agricultural education program and have satisfactory plans for a Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE). 2. Learn and explain the FFA Creed, FFA Mission and Motto, and FFA salute. 3. Describe and explain the meaning of the FFA emblem and FFA colors. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the FFA Code of Ethics and the proper use of the FFA jacket.
11 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of the organization, the chapter constitution and bylaws and the chapter Program of Activities. 6. Own or have access to the Official FFA Manual and the Official FFA Student Handbook. 7. Receive at least an 80% on the Greenhand quiz 8. Submit a written application for the Greenhand FFA Degree. Discovery Degree: Discovery FFA Degrees are given out to at the chapter level. To receive a Discovery FFA Degree, members must meet the following requirements: 1. Enroll in an agriculture class for at least a portion of a school year while in grades Become a dues-paying FFA member at the chapter, state and national levels. 3. Participate in at least one FFA chapter activity outside of scheduled class time. 4. Have an understanding of agriculture-related careers and entrepreneurship opportunities. 5. Become familiar with the local FFA chapter s Program of Activities (POA). 6. Submit a written application for the degree.
