3 Welcome When the Safety Codes Act came into force in 1993 it introduced three vital components of the safety codes system which we still see today: Administration of the safety codes system was best served at the local level; by accredited municipalities or corporations, and if desired, through a contract arrangement with an accredited agency; Code advice, plans reviews, inspections, and enforcement was to be the responsibility of safety codes officers, trained and certified to a high standard; and The Safety Codes Council itself should consist of volunteer members who bring dedication, commitment and expertise to consideration of the codes and standards that have always made Alberta: a safe place to live, work, and play. The annual Awards Program is a way to recognize those individuals and organizations that do an outstanding job in upholding and strengthening the safety codes system. At the Council level, we honour a volunteer member who demonstrates the commitment, enthusiasm and energy of Dr. Ken Sauer, former Chair and longtime member of the Safety Codes Council. For 2012 we have added two Administrators Awards, recognizing excellence in bringing to life wh at was envisioned when the Safety Codes Act first came into force. They are the Accreditation Award and the Certification Award. The Accreditation Award recognizes an accredited municipality, corporation, or agency that shows exemplary behavior in adherence to and services provided under its quality management plan, along with demonstrating best industry practice. The Certification Award recognizes a safety codes officer who is committed to the profession, demonstrates integrity and passion for the work, and who proactively assists and encourages other safety codes officers to do a better job. By recognizing the contributions of these people and organizations, we will encourage and promote ongoing participation and excellence within the safety codes system. Robert Blakely, Chair
